Résumé:
Thirty or so years ago, architecture changed. A strong desire to explore the artistic and humanistic side of the practice pushed it onto paper and into installations; "paper architecture" became the locus for the avantgarde. In recognition of this, the Canada Council for the Arts established the Prix de Rome in Architecture. During the years the Prix de Rome was in place, from 1987 to 2003, some of Canada’s most important architects were given the opportunity to explore a more theoretical and experimental practice. Their projects, however, were not well disseminated and remain unknown to most of the architectural community. By reproducing the work of each of the Prix de Rome laureates, this book hopes to introduce this important work to a broader artistic community. To contextualize the work and its influence on a generation of architects, each of the documented projects also includes an exploratory text by the laureate who created it and traces the trajectory of that laureate’s career since that time. Critical essays by Gary Michael Dault, Daniel M. Millette and Marco Polo consider the interface between art and architecture that the Prix de Rome has encouraged and explore the issues, ideas and representational methods from contemporary art that influence speculative architectural practice. Laureates include John Shnier, Jacques Rousseau, Sophie Charlebois, Hal Ingberg, Dereck Revington, John McMinn, Hal Ingberg, Anthony Robins, Philip Beesley, Philippe Lupien, Pierre Thibault, Atelier Big City, Peter Yeadon, Jason King and George Yu, Atelier In Situ, and Andrew King. Each project is fully documented with extensive colour photographs and illustrations, and the accompanying text appears in both English and French.

In architecture, as in food, local is an idea whose time has come. Of course, the idea of an architecture that responds to site; draws on local building traditions, materials, and crafts; and strives to create a sense of community is not new. Résumé:
In architecture, as in food, local is an idea whose time has come. Of course, the idea of an architecture that responds to site; draws on local building traditions, materials, and crafts; and strives to create a sense of community is not new. Yet, the way it has evolved in the past few years is indeed defining a new movement. From the rammed-earth houses of Rick Joy and Pacific Northwest timber houses of Tom Kundig, to the community-built structures of Rural Studio and Francis Kere, designers everywhere are championing an architecture that exists from, in, and for a specific place.

Résumé:
Now available in paperback, renowned writer and thinker David Leatherbarrow's groundbreaking Architecture Oriented Otherwise argues for a more profound, yet simpler, way of thinking about architecture, namely on the basis of how it performs. It's not only about how a building functions but also how it acts, including its effects on observers and inhabitants as well as on the landscape that situates it. Drawing on an encyclopedic reading of contemporary philosophy, as well as from the work of architects whose work he admires, including Peter Zumthor, Renzo Piano, Le Corbusier, and Frank Lloyd Wright, Leatherbarrow challenges architects to think about their buildings in a vastly wider context, opening up the possibility of creating works that are richer in meaning, quality, and life.

Résumé:
This is a manual investigating the subject of urban ecology and systemic development from the perspective of architectural design. It sets out to explore two main goals: to discuss the contemporary relevance of a systemic practice to architectural design, and to share a toolbox of informational design protocols developed to describe the city as a territory of self-organization. Collecting together nearly a decade of design experiments by the authors and their practice, ecoLogicStudio, the book discusses key disciplinary definitions such as ecologic urbanism, algorithmic architecture, bottom-up or tactical design, behavioural space and the boundary of the natural and the artificial realms within the city and architecture.
