Résumé:
Digital technologies have changed the world, transforming how, where, and when we communicate, love, learn, produce, distribute, and consume. "Digital lives in the global city" examines those changes in the context of urban life, investigating how urban land, governance, and the economy are being remade by advancing communication technologies. Interspersing critical scholarship with provocative short works from non-tradtional authors to engage with a wide range of issues wrought by digital infrastructure, the book addresses such topics as struggles over unsafe and illegal buildings in Mumbai, the conditions of migrant work in Singapore, the question of digital debt in Toronto, and targeted policing in New York. This nuanced exploration reveals the profound connections between digital technologies and the social life of global cities.

Résumé:
Stefan Gronert approaches "Girlfriends" through its deliberate and elusive ambiguity, providing technical detail and historical background that allow some of the work’s motivation and depth to become clearer. Gronert analyzes Polke’s relationship to his tutors and peers, especially Gerhard Richter; describes the art historical context in which Polke worked; and discusses some of the social and political issues to which Girlfriends refers. Considering such topics as the distinction between Polke and Alain Jacquet in their use of photographed material, between Polke’s use of the raster technique and that of Roy Lichtenstein, and the feminist discourse of the time, Gronert draws on a variety of critical interpretations of Polke’s work, including some material that has not yet been translated into English.

Résumé:
Set within the cultural and political world of Vienna from the fin-de siecle to the present day, this book provides an insightful analysis of the city's extraordinarily rich architectural tradition. Beginning with Wagner’s polemical manifesto, ''Moderne Architektur'', it stresses the importance of the fraught and highly polarized cultural politics that engulfed Vienna for most of the twentieth century and ultimately produced much of what is modern in every field of culture and science. The book also places architectural history within the context of the political economy that has shaped Vienna and highlights the relatively unknown tradition of Viennese social housing, initiated by social democratic Red Vienna in the 1920s. Today, 60% of Vienna’s population lives in the most successful social housing in the world.

Résumé:
Traditional building methods – such as those used in pueblos, timbered houses, or the Japanese minka – exist in fascinating diversity and create the face of a region. However, as a result of globalization they have been marginalized in many places. In the fastest developing countries in particular, a wealth of experience that goes back hundreds of years is being irretrievably lost, even though valuable insights can be gained for modern building. Using the examples of selected domestic buildings from all continents, 30 international experts demonstrate why we can still learn from vernacular architecture; they analyze the cultural context and the adaptation to topographic/climactic conditions, and focus on the local materials used as well as on the construction, the building process, and the necessary maintenance.

Résumé:
This early Tiqqun text has lost none of its pertinence. ''The Cybernetic Hypothesis'' presents a genealogy of our “technical” present that doesn't point out the political and ethical dilemmas embedded in it as if they were puzzles to be solved, but rather unmasks an enemy force to be engaged and defeated. Cybernetics in this context is the ''teknê'' of threat reduction, which unfortunately has required the reduction of a disturbing humanity to packets of manageable information. Not so easily done. Not smooth. A matter of civil war, in fact. According to the authors, cybernetics is the latest master fable, welcomed at a certain crisis juncture in late capitalism. And now the interesting question is: Has the guest in the house become the master of the house?

What does it mean to be HUO? What does it mean to be a curator? Is there anything less interesting to me (or you?) than selecting artists for exhibitions? In an era of, let's call it, “boutique” art shows, the issue seems about as relevant as Diet Coke. But if anything, Hans is the Real Thing. Hans is Coca-Cola. In this book you'll find personal, anecdotal remarks on HUO's character, republished texts, and portraits (by artists including Alex Katz) that give context to the questions that frame the book: “Who is HUO?” and “What does HUO do?” More so, “What has he done?” If the art world were to seek out a supreme leader who was benevolent, kind, and fair, HUO would be it.

Résumé:
This collection gathers together Victor Segalen's previously untranslated essay “Synesthestics and the Symbolist School” and his novel In A Sound World, a work of fantasy concerning an inventor lost in his own immersive harmonic space. Segalen's medical training (he had a career as a ship's doctor) inspired an interest in the link between the prevailing Symbolism of the time and synesthesia, the condition whereby one sense affects the perception of another. This edition also includes an essay by the musician and cultural historian David Toop that explores the historical context of Segalen's ideas. Also included is Segalen's libretto for Orpheus Rex, a collaboration with the composer Claude Debussy, which he would use as an opportunity for further explorations of his synesthetic concepts.

This monograph explores the design philosophy of the three partners of Surfacedesign, who are committed to solutions that emerge from the site itself and challenge conventional approaches to landscape. The work is informed by the vast openness and frontier spirit of the West, expressed in rugged materials and sustainable planting. Surfacedesign focuses on cultivating a sense of connection to the built and natural world, pushing people to engage with the landscape in new ways. The design approach emphasizes and celebrates the unique context and imaginative potential of each project. The studio's process is rooted in asking novel questions and listening to a site and its users, a process that has led to engaging and inspiring landscapes that are rugged, contemporary, and crafted.

Résumé:
Plant life is a subject frequently ignored in the context of urban theory, and the essays in 'The Botanical City' offer a fresh perspective into new ecological forms that continue to emerge in cities across the world. Much like the unique adaptive strategies of city-native animals, urban plants often become distinctively intertwined with their cities’ human infrastructure, and this book explores both the scientific approaches to understanding these new ecologies and attempts on the part of writers and artists to engage with urban flora. Edited by the British cultural geographers Matthew Gandy and Sandra Jasper, the book comprises ecological reflections on city design, history, art and mapmaking, alongside philosophical excursions on the meaning of urban ecology in the Anthropocene.

Résumé:
Indigenous activism in the Americas has long focused on the symbolic reclamation of land. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, contributors to this issue explore narratives of territory and origin that provide a foundation for this political practice. The contributors study Indigenous-language stories from displaced communities, analyzing the meaning and power of these narratives in the context of diaspora and the struggle for land. Essays address topics including territorial struggle and environmentalism, Indigenous resistance to neoliberal policies of land dispossession, and alliances between academic and Indigenous knowledges and activisms. This issue brings together fruitful comparisons of theoretical frameworks and case studies in Indigenous studies across North and South America. Its contributors advance the process of returning to Indigenous knowledge, offering essential alternatives to Western epistemologies.
