Résumé:
This volume is the result of a fascinating investigation by international experts into the influences of modernist architecture in the Arab world. Nine case studies provide the foundation for a thorough exploration of the relevant cultural-historical, sociopolitical, climatic and demographic aspects. Questions concerning the region’s reciprocal relationship with modernist architecture in the period from 1945 to 1973 are investigated through the biographies of selected buildings and building complexes from Iraq, Lebanon, Kuwait, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco. Texts, contemporary images, architectural drawings and archival material are used to document the process from commissioning and design through to completion and building use.

Résumé:
The contributors to this collection of essays explore the relationship between food and architecture, asking what can be learned by examining the (often metaphorical) intersection of the preparation of meals and the production of space. In a culture that includes the Food Channel and the knife-juggling chefs of Benihana, food has become not only an obsession but an alternative art form. The nineteen essays and "Gallery of Recipes" in "Eating architecture" seize this moment to investigate how art and architecture engage issues of identity, ideology, conviviality, memory, and loss that cookery evokes. The essays are organized into four sections that lead the reader from the landscape to the kitchen, the table, and finally the mouth. The essays in "Place settings" examine the relationships between food and location that arise in culinary colonialism and the global economy of tourism. "Philosophy in the kitchen" traces the routines that create a site for aesthetic experimentation, including an examination of gingerbread houses as art, food, and architectural space. The essays in "Table rules" consider the spatial and performative aspects of eating and the ways in which shared meals are among the most perishable and preserved cultural artifacts. Finally, "Embodied taste" considers the sensual apprehension of food and what it means to consume a work of art. The "Gallery of recipes" contains images by contemporary architects on the subject of eating architecture.

Résumé:
Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897–2000) entered the modernist canon with her “Frankfurt Kitchen.” She is also considered a pioneer of social architecture, a women’s rights activist, and, last but not least, a heroine of the resistance to the Nazi dictatorship. In this book, available in English for the first time, recent research in the fields of art history, contemporary history, pedagogy, and gender studies provides a nuanced picture of Schütte-Lihotzky, whose estate is archived at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The volume explores her rich architectural oeuvre, her transnational experiences and professional networks, her political development as a Communist, and her current reception. It breaks through the mythology to present a rounded picture of Schütte-Lihotzky, an icon of architectural history.

Résumé:
British architect Cedric Price (1934–2003) had a lifelong fascination with the mechanization of society and its effect on people’s lives. In the 1960s and ’70s, Price began to look for answers to some of the pressing problems he saw in society in the tenets of architecture and design. His intense intellectual curiosity soon led him to other disciplines, including the social and natural sciences, while his sense of humor and self-irony—which also extended to his profession—allowed him to keep his ideas in perspective. With "The city and the architecture of change", Tanja Herdt offers a comprehensive look back at the life and work of Price. Based on extensive research, including previously unpublished materials, Herdt provides a thorough account of Price’s key architectural concepts and visions, and then analyzes his perspectives on the city as a system, the influence of products and contemporary culture on architecture, and the role of science and technology in architecture and design. Apart from providing new insights into Price’s well-known and studied projects, such as Fun Palace and Potteries Thinkbelt, Herdt also brings to light many lesser-known works from the 1970s like McAppy and The Generator. She concludes by refuting the common perception of Cedric Price as an “anti-architect.” Richly illustrated with plans and photographs, many of which have never been published before, "The city and the architecture of change" affords a glimpse into the mind of this highly creative and forward-thinking architect.
