Description:
Series 1: Competition and design, 1996 – 2014, consists of approximately 9000 born-digital files that document the competition and design phases of the Hypo Alpe-Adria Center. The majority of the records date from 1996 to 2001. This series largely contains materials relating to design, including files showing early conceptualization of the project, the competition entry, presentation boards, and various iterations of the design through the final design documentation. It is documented primarily through more than 3300 CAD drawings, including floorplans, sections, and elevations, whose formats include PowerCAD, PowerDraw, Microstation, and AutoCAD. There are also more than 650 image files, including renderings, sketches, and photographs of the physical model and construction site. This series also includes a limited amount of additional textual documentation.

Description:
This project series documents the restoration of the Grandes Armazéns do Chiado building in Lisbon, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 58/80 N4. The office assigned the dates 1988-1998 for this project. The Grandes Armazéns do Chiado was part of Bloco C and identified as building 4 in Siza's reconstruction plan. The site of the Grandes Armazéns served several different functions in its history, including a hotel, a palace, and a convent, before becoming a department store in 1894. In the 1920s, a hotel was created at the top floors. After the destructive fire of 1988, the new owners of the building were interested in using the totality of the building for a shopping mall and restaurants. On the other hand, Siza's proposal included the expansion of the hotel in the building to introduce more public activity in the area after the regular work and shopping hours. Several programs were proposed to the owners of the building, and it was decided in 1996 that the hotel space would be reduced to the two top floors to have more room for the shopping center. The new division included 41 hotel rooms and 41 stores. The interior of the shopping mall was designed by Eduardo Souto Moura. Drawings include studies, working drawings, mechanical drawings, and structural drawings. Textual material includes project documentation, studies, meeting reports, and correspondence. Photographic material includes photographs of the building before the fire, ruins, model, and construction work. Documentation for this project can also be found in subseries AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS1 and AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS7 of this project series.

Description:
File documents the partially executed project for the Restricted International Competition "South Friedrichstadt as a Place to Live and Work," West Berlin (now Berlin), West Germany (now in Germany). Material in this file was produced between 1980 and 1988. File documents the design for one of four urban blocks in the area of the Kochstrasse and Friedrichstrasse, Berlin. The competition required the preservation of three existing structures and the construction of mixed-used buildings on vacant lots. The architect develops an overall strategy to occupy the urban block by extending the geometry of the three existing buildings onto the site (DR1991:0018:002; DR1991:0018:004-006), on which he overlays what he calls the "Mercator grid", an orthogonal grid oriented according to the compass (DR1991:0018:016). The "el structures" used by Eisenman in House X, House 11a, and the Cannaregio project reappear in plan, and later as forms emerging from the square compartments delimited by the "Mercator grid", this time developed three-dimensionally (House X, 1975-1977, DR1994:0138:001-1546; House 11a, 1978, DR1994:0139:001-303; Cannaregio project, 1978, DR1991:0017:001-094). After finalizing the urban concept, Eisenman concentrates his efforts on the planning of individual buildings, developing the massing of the building facing Kochstrasse in a series of axonometrics (DR1991:0018:088-092), sections (DR1991:0018:088) and facade studies (DR1991:0018:204-210). A series of scrolled drawings study the L-shaped elements and thin slabs with characteristically gridded surfaces found in House X (DR1991:0018:204 and DR1991:0018:209-210). File contains record drawings, conceptual drawings, design development drawings, schematic drawings, competition drawings, presentation drawings, photographic material, and textual records.

Description:
The project series documents the competition entry and infrastructure development of the northeast coast park (Parque litoral nord-est, Barcelona Forum 2004, Sant Adrià de Besòs) and adjoining recycling plant (Edificio de oficinas y planta integral de RSU) in Santa Adriá de Besòs, Barcelona, Spain. The firm identified this project as number 133. The competition was organized by the Barcelona City Council and was part of a larger plan to develop new infrastructure for Barcelona, as the Host City for the International Forum of Cultures held in 2004. A number of architects and firms were involved in other projects related to the infrastructure plan, like the South East Coastal Park & Auditoriums by the Foreign Office Architects (See AP171.S1.2000.D6). The park included several other features, like the design of urban furniture (Pep and Xurret benches, and a fence), an artificial mountain, a youth hostel, a small security building and a pier. Only the park, the artificial mountain and the benches were built. The firm arranged work for this project with the following numbers: 133-1, 133-2, 133-6 to 133-8, and 133-10. The CCA did not receive materials classified under numbers 133-9 and 133-11. The recycling plant includes, among other things, office space, an ecomuseum, and a garden. Abalos and Herreros won the competition for design, construction and exploitation of the plant. The firm worked in collaboration with the firm Tersa, S.A. The firm assigned numbers 133-3 to 133-5 to identify this work. Documenting the project are design development and working drawings, correspondence, invoices, minutes, project descriptions, studies, budgets, contracts, reference, photographic and digital materials, and a videocassette.

Description:
The series documents Pettena’s artistic, architectural and design projects from 1966 to 2018. It includes material related to his performances, installations, furniture designs, architectural projects, films he produced, and series of photographic projects. The series includes projects created during Pettena’s residencies in the United States, such as “Vestirsi Di Siede [Wearable Chairs]” (1971), “Ice House I” (1971) and “Ice House II” (1972), and “Tumbleweeds Catcher” (1972). The series also contains material showing Pettena’s growing interest in the preservation and conservation of historical buildings with projects like the new Town Hall of Canazei (1990-1997) and the preservation and conversion of the Forte Inglese in Portoferraio (1992). The presence of nature in architecture and it’s influence on the architect’s work, a recurring theme in Pettena’s work, is also documented in this series with projects such as his proposal “Grass architecture” for the Trigon competition in 1971, the photographic series “Case Conquistate Dal Verde” (1985), and the installation “Architecture forgiven by nature” (2017). The series contains sketches, renderings, and plans, either originals or reprographic copies, and photographs for installation projects and his furniture designs. It also contains drawings, notes, storyboards, and photographs of the performances. There are also films, in digital formats, and film stills for short movie projects produced by Pettena. Also included, are two models: a small wooden model for ”Rumble” sofa” (1967) and a model of for “Archipensierio” (2001-2018) installation of 2001. Finally, the series contains, sketches, floor plans, site plans, sections and elevations, reference drawings and photographs, proposals, and cost estimates for architectural projects such as the Canazei Town Hall (1990-1997), Fort Inglese conversion (1992), and for Pettena’s residence on Elba (1972-2012).
