Résumé:
In 1989, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) developed a daring architectural typology—a ''project without form''. The setting is a laboratory headed by Rem Koolhaas, in which actors from different disciplines work on three competition challenges at the same time. In the process, the mechanisms of project development and knowledge acquisition merge into increasingly abstract systems and representations. The ''project without form'' is not built in any of the three cases. The book not only follows the progress of the laboratory in 1989 but also reflects on its prehistory and aftermath, drawing on interviews with various actors at OMA conducted by Holger Schurk. The publication focuses on the hybrid processes of production and representation in the OMA project Très Grande Bibliothèque (TGB) in Paris: these are visualized by means of numerous hitherto unpublished sketches, drawings, and photographs as well as sequences of video stills.

Résumé:
A place comes into existence through the depth of relationships that underwrite a physical location with layers of sedimented names. In this volume scholars and artists conduct varied forms of place-based inquiry to demonstrate why place matters. The volume brings into conversation photographic projects and essays that revitalize the study of landscape. Contributors engage the study of place through an approach that Jonathan Bordo and Blake Fitzpatrick call critical topography: the way that we understand critical thought to range over a place, or how thought and symbolic forms invent place through text and image as if initiated by an X marking the spot. Critical topography’s tasks are to mediate and to diminish the gap between representation and referent, to be both in the world and about the world; to ask what place is this, what are its names, where am I, how and with what responsibilities may I be here?

Résumé:
In his previous project Migropolis, Wolfgang Scheppe proposed Venice, Italy, as a prototype of the increasingly globalized city. Here, the German philosopher reexamines the city from another perspective. Done. Book is an "inquiry into the depth of visual archives," and how the archives of a city can aid an understanding of its society. Under this rubric, Scheppe compares two obsessive attempts at archiving or summating Venice: the Venetian notebooks of English art critic John Ruskin (1819-1900), compiled for his classic study Stones of Venice, and previously unseen photographs assembled by Alvio Gavagnin (born 1944), a contemporary resident of the city's working-class district. Despite their differences, both projects stem from a similar self-imposed commitment on the part of their makers: to provide a comprehensive representation of the details of an urban network, whose truth can be glimpsed in the minutiae and hidden particulars.

Résumé:
Spanning 1989 to 2009, this anthology collects the influential writings of American artist, musician and critic John Miller (born 1954), which have been lauded by Bruce Hainley in Artforum as “a pungent intervention into the ideologies of beauty, representation and looking.” Ranging from reviews and cultural essays to theory and artist's statements, Miller's writings distinguish themselves from other styles of art criticism insofar as they relate to his larger artistic concerns with the social context of the art object and its sociopolitical ramifications as a commodity (as the title of this volume implies); they are also deeply informed by Miller's vast knowledge of art history and popular culture. More recently, Miller has entered into close dialogue with Dan Graham, Bob Nickas and Nicolas Guagnini. Many of the essays collected here - such as his contributions to the German magazine Texte zur Kunst - appear in English for the first time.

Résumé:
Hollywood Cinema and the Real Los Angeles traces the interaction of the real city, its movie business, and filmed image, focusing on the crucial period from the construction of the first studios in the 1910s to the decline of the studio system fifty years later. As Los Angeles gradually became one of the ten largest cities in the world, the film industry made key contributions to its rapid growth and frequent crises in economic, social, political and cultural life. Whether filmmakers engaged with the real city on location or recreated it on a studio set, Los Angeles shaped the films that were made there and circulated influentially worldwide. The book pays particular attention to early cinema, slapstick comedy, movies about the movies and film noir, which are each explored in new ways, with an emphasis on urban and architectural space and its representation, as well as filmmaking style and technique.

This title, published in 1979 and long since out of print, now appears as a reprint from Lars Muller Publishers. The original book was released in the series of publications Source Materials of the Contemporary Arts initiated by Kasper Konig and produced by the Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. The publication represents an important document in Dan Graham's artistic examination of the video medium. Graham's installations and performances with video from the years 1970 - 78 are documented with numerous illustrations, photos, and brief descriptions. In addition, the volume contains an essay by the artist in which he examines the various possibilities and forms of representation offered by the video medium, and draws the boundaries between these and representational spaces in television, film, or architecture. The book also offers contributions by Michael Asher and Dara Birnbaum, as well as an annex with a biography and bibliography.

Résumé:
It is an often heard cliché that the world is getting smaller. No. 235 / Encyclopaedia of an allotment rather proves the opposite. With a meticulous photographic study, Anne Geene gives us an insight into the surprising wealth of flora and fauna in an allotment garden of one of the Netherlands most urbanized areas. Hundreds of plant and animal species, remarkable behaviour and particular observations are represented with appropriate photographic techniques varying from saltprinting to microphotography. No. 235 / encyclopaedia of an allotment is inspired by science but has no scientific pretentions whatsoever. Although her observations are completely personal, they are selected and captured with the precision of a scientist and with a similar attention to detail. The book aims to be a complete visual representation of everything that grows, blossoms, swims, crawls and flies in the exact 245 square meters of allotment nr. 235 of garden complex 'eigen hof' in Rotterdam.
