The smart thing to do is to think in terms of interaction, minimum use of materials and energy, and careful planning over longer periods of time, so as to reduce the environmental impact of this major human activity called building. What you then get is smart architecture. "Smart Architecture" is a lavishly illustrated, light-hearted book. The outcome of the research project that SLA Foundation presented on its smartarch website (www.smartarch.nl), it mainly consists of examples involving climate control, supplemented with new ideas on planning, building and construction and the application of intelligent systems, all contributing to sustainability. In the book challenges and opportunities are analysed, guided by numerous inspiring examples. It presents a smart way to fulfil user demands now and in roughly three hundred years' time.

Josef Paul Kleihues (1933–2004) was one of the most prolific architects of postwar Germany, famous both as the Director of the International Building Exhibition Berlin in 1987 and for his design for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. He was also known for his sensitive interventions into older buildings, an instance of which is the former Hamburger Bahnhof - now the Museum für Gegenwart - in Berlin, where Kleihues intermixed glass walls and light installations by the American Minimalist Dan Flavin with the building’s original nineteenth-century Neoclassical design. (His reconstruction was widely deemed to rival or even surpass Gae Aulenti's overhaul of the interior of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.) This first volume of a three-part monograph presents projects up to 1980, including the highly acclaimed Berlin Sanitation Department and the Neukölln Hospital. Even in these early works, Kleihues’ practical, problem-solving approach is already evident, indicating his readiness to reflect on the traditional approaches of Modern architecture and his capacity to expand them in interesting ways. This very generously illustrated volume was designed by Kleihues himself, just before his death in 2004.

Others will be new even to experts. For example, early innovators Girault de Prangey, Anna Atkins, Camille Silvy, Henry Bosse, and the Langenheim brothers have been rediscovered in recent years, bringing to light the importance of their particular contributions to the history of art and photography. The first decades of the twentieth century brought enormous change in Britain. Men’s and women’s roles came under scrutiny, class and social structures were transformed. This book casts new light on the notorious Bloomsbury Group and how the issues of their day influenced their interpretation and decoration of the home. Christopher Reed analyzes the rooms designed by Bloomsbury artists as spaces in which to be modern. The book traces the development of Bloomsbury’s domestic aesthetic from the group’s influential promulgation of Post-Impressionism in Britain around 1910 through the 1930's. In detailed studies of rooms created for Virginia Woolf and John Maynard Keynes, among others, by Woolf’s sister Vanessa Bell and her artist colleagues Duncan Grant and Roger Fry, Reed challenges the accepted notion that these artists drifted away from modernism. He presents their work as an alternative form of modernism, later suppressed by sexist and homophobic attitudes that disparaged the decorative arts and domesticity in general, as well as Bloomsbury in particular. The aesthetic and ideological implications of the Bloomsbury interiors were international in scope, Reed argues, and constitute important episodes in this history of modernity.

Europan 2003 is a call for ideas to revitalize suburban life in Europe. With 68 sites across the continent to choose from, the design theme this time round is 'Suburban challenge, urban intensity and housing diversity'. Transforming the post-war growth areas into enduring urban districts with a diversity of house types and up-to-date amenities is an issue of great relevance in Europe today. Over 280 projects were submitted for the Dutch sites by young architects from the Netherlands and beyond. The winning designs will be announced at the end of January 2004 during a special event at the Netherlands Architecture Institute when an exhibition of all the submitted plans will be opened. The book "Europan 7: Suburban challenge, urban intensity and housing diversity" gives an overview of the prizewinners, exhaustively documenting their design proposals with model photographs, plans and conceptual sketches. Interviews with the designers shed further light on the projects. In the Philippines, female elders from Kalinga blaze a trail when pushed into impromptu protest. Equally striking accounts from Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, India, Nepal, Peru and Thailand weave a tapestry of trauma and triumph, shedding light on not-too-distant histories otherwise overlooked. Indigenous Peoples all over the world have always had to stand their ground in the face of colonialism. While the details may differ, what these stories have in common is their commitment to resistance in a world that puts profit before respect, and western notions of progress before their own. Movements and Moments is an introductory glimpse into how Indegenous Peoples tell these stories in their own words. From Southeast Asia to South America, vibrant communities must grapple with colonial realities to assert ownership over their lands and traditions. This project was undertaken in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Indonesien in Jakarta. These stories were selected from an open call across 42 countries to spotlight feminist movements and advocacies in the Global South.

However, this AD, in collaboration with the Estate of Lebbeus Woods, explores the earlier period beginning in the late 1960s when Woodswas honing his draughtsmanship and theoretical positions while experimenting with a variety of themes and different modes of expression. When he burst onto the international architectural scene with a solo exhibition and accompanying catalogue (Lebbeus Woods: Origins) at the Architectural Association, London, in 1985, some wondered how anyone could emerge so fully formed, from nowhere. Working against the logic of "nowhere," this issue charts his early trajectory through the largely unpublished drawings and texts, linking them with what came after. Aiming to generate new scholarship, its roster of international interdisciplinary critics and commentators offer a new understanding of Woods’s work and of his formative years, also shining a light on how we might think about the ‘early work’ of any architect’s career.

Mostly the artist observes and records, but he also uses snow as both his medium and subject. The arresting sequence which begins this book shows tracks left in the snow, lines carved out by walking along the contours of a hillside. Often panoramic diptychs carry the lines from one image to the next. Then there are night views of the same hillsides, the topography this time etched in light. Flechtner would attach lights to his skis and, with his camera set at a distance and for a long exposure, traverse the hillside. The two-dimensional result is, in effect, a kind of “writing” or “drawing” in the snow; three dimensionally it becomes sculptural graphics. Later in the book there are photographs of mountain passes, followed by images of the town La Chaux-de-Fonds. Snow is no longer white, but ultramarine, viridian, turquoise, and violet. Finally, there are views of the ice-impacted seas around Iceland and Greenland.

The two-dimensional result is, in effect, a kind of “writing” or “drawing” in the snow; three dimensionally it becomes sculptural graphics. Later in the book there are photographs of mountain passes, followed by images of the town La Chaux-de-Fonds. Snow is no longer white, but ultramarine, viridian, turquoise, and violet. Finally, there are views of the ice-impacted seas around Iceland and Greenland.
