Résumé:
Focusing on the last ten years, New Scandinavian Photography highlights the work produced by a diverse range of artists who are exploring and manipulating the use of photography in their practices and explores photography as a medium through academic texts and interviews, addressing the technical and material properties of photography in the context of fine art and pan-media practice with a focus on the exhibition room as well as printed matter. Through critical examination and personal interviews, the book showcases established names in the photographic art scene such as Asger Carlsen and Emil Salto, along with emerging talents that include Marten Lange and Marthe Elise Stramund. A key focus is upon artist’s use of photography as a medium, along with their methods of presentation, from the white cube gallery space to intimate printed matter.

A curatorial situation is always one of hospitality. It implies invitations to artists, artworks, curators, audiences, and institutions; people and objects are received, welcomed, and temporarily brought together. It offers resources for material and physical support while also responding to a need for recognition, respect, or attention. Finally, and very importantly, a curatorial situation operates in the space between an unconditional acceptance of the other and exclusions legitimized through various rules and regulations. This publication analyzes, from the perspective of hospitality, the curatorial within the current sociopolitical context through key topics concerning immigration, conditions along borders, and accommodations for refugees. The contributions in this volume, by international curators, artists, critics, and theoreticians, deal with conditions of decontextualization and displacement, encounters between the local and the foreign, as well as the satisfaction of basic human needs.

The old-fashioned pitched roof is experiencing a resurrection, in different and often surprising forms. In this profusely illustrated, inspiring picture book that recalls the classic texts on the modern movement, the reader can explore the potential of pitched roofs for a building s appearance, the relationship of the roofs to their context, and of the interior rooms that result. Its architectural possibilities seem even more interesting as they are rediscovered by today s architects. Based on the longtime work at the Department of Architecture at the ZHAW Winterthur. Includes nine articles by well-known authors Max Bosshard, Christoph Luchsinger, Nott Caviezel, Aita Flury, Hartmut Frank, Bettina Köhler, Marc Loeliger, Jacques Lucan, Martin Tschan and Christoph Wieser, who each explore the pitched roof from various points of view.

Anonymous snapshots are the ideal projection screen: they inspire the imagination to invent stories. The photographer and artist Luciano Rigolini demonstrates, however, that these images, freed from their context, can also convey a visual experience. Rigolini pieces together his findings from flea markets, archives, or the Internet to create a new, independent work - a grammar of seeing and perception.

The making of shadows is an act as old as architecture itself. From the gloom of the medieval hearth through to the masterworks of modernism, shadows have been an essential yet neglected presence in architectural history. "Shadow-Makers" tells for the first time the history of shadows in architecture. It weaves together a rich narrative – combining close readings of significant buildings both ancient and modern with architectural theory and art history – to reveal the key places and moments where shadows shaped architecture in distinctive and dynamic ways. It shows how shadows are used as an architectural instrument of form, composition, and visual effect, while also exploring the deeper cultural context – tracing differing conceptions of their meaning and symbolism, whether as places of refuge, devotion, terror, occult practice, sublime experience or as metaphors of the unconscious.

Résumé:
Across the world, the housing crisis is escalating. Mass migration to cities has led to rapid urbanisation on an unprecedented scale, while the withdrawal of public funding from social housing provision in Western countries, and widening income inequality, have further compounded the situation. In response to this context, forward-thinking architects are taking the lead with a collaborative approach. By partnering with allied fields, working with residents, developing new forms of housing, and leveraging new funding systems and policies, they are providing strategic leadership for what many consider to be our cities’ most pressing crisis. Amidst growing economic and health disparities, this issue of AD asks how housing projects, and the design processes behind them, might be interventions towards greater social equity, and how collaborative work in housing might reposition the architectural profession at large.

Résumé:
"A Real Living Contact with theThings Themselves" selects nine essays written throughout Scalbert’s career from the early 1990s to the present. Four of the essays are detailed studies of major buildings, including both critiques written at the time the buildings were made and comments on extant buildings that contributed to their rediscovery. Other pieces represent broader studies of historical movements and ideas, interpreting their significance within the context of contemporary architecture. All of the essays are based on direct experience, whether through quiet contemplation or candid interviews with architects, builders, or inhabitants. An architect by training, Scalbert writes with the purpose of illuminating the design efforts made and enriching the form of the architectures he describes, and his essays thus contribute to many key moments in the architectural history of the past three decades.

Résumé:
Denise Scott Brown has shaped the course of contemporary architecture since the 1960s. She is particularly well known for ''Learning from Las Vegas,'' an enormously successful research project with her companion in life and work, Robert Venturi, and Steven Izenour, which challenged the way many architects saw the city. Widely cited and sometimes misunderstood, Scott Brown's insistence that we cast a critical eye on modernism ignorant of context, history, and joint creativity remains impactful today. The first book to focus exclusively on Denise Scott Brown, '' Your Guide to Downtown Denise Scott Brown Brown'' takes readers through her childhood in 1930s South Africa and her education in 1950s England, to her well-known work in photography, her writings and studies, and her work as an architect and urban planner on four continents.

Sauerbruch Hutton is an award-winning, international agency for architecture, urbanism and design. Its architecture is always in the context of the city and combines functionality with an ecological performance that goes far beyond purely technical aspects. Projects such as the police station in Berlin, the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau or the Sammlung Brandhorst Museum in Munich demonstrate a convincing use of materiality and colour. Founded in 1989 by Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton, the agency today works on a wide variety of projects worldwide - including housing, museum, educational institution and office high-rise buildings -, impressing with precisely detailed, ecologically conscious, and urbanistically sophisticated designs. This monograph on the Sauerbruch Hutton agency looks behind the scenes, describes processes and comprises one thing in particular: many building details.

Résumé:
Existing narratives cast the Greeks as the progenitors of classical art and architecture or rely on historical sources dating centuries after the fact to establish the Roman context. Author John North Hopkins, however, allows the material and visual record to play the primary role in telling the story of Rome’s origins, synthesizing important new evidence from recent excavations. Hopkins’s detailed account of urban growth and artistic, political, and social exchange establishes strong parallels with communities across the Mediterranean. From the late 7th century, Romans looked to increasingly distant lands for shifts in artistic production. By the end of the archaic period they were building temples that would outstrip the monumentality of even those on the Greek mainland. The book’s extensive illustrations feature new reconstructions, allowing readers a rare visual exploration of this fragmentary evidence.
