Résumé:
Catalog of the exhibition Radically Modern : Planning and Construction in 1960s Berlin at the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin from 29th May to 26th October 2015. Destroyed in the Second World War and divided by the Wall, Berlin experienced a veritable construction boom during the 1960s. Inspired by the spirit of a new beginning and technological euphoria, urban planners and architects designed radical new cityscapes for a modern society. Often unjustly criticized as inhumane or unsightly, important examples from this period of architecture have often already been torn down, disfigured by later alterations, or are threatened with demolition today. This publication for the first time takes a look at the context of this architecture's emergence, examining formal aspects and underlying international influences on the architecture developed in both East and West Berlin.

Résumé:
Every time you wheel a shopping cart through one of Walmart’s more than 10,000 stores worldwide, or swipe your credit card or purchase something online, you enter a mind-boggling logistical regime. Even if you’ve never shopped at Walmart, its logistics have probably affected your life. ''The Rule of Logistics'' makes sense of its spatial and architectural ramifications by analyzing the stores, distribution centers, databases, and inventory practices of the world’s largest corporation. This book tells the story of Walmart’s buildings in the context of the corporation’s entire operation, itself characterized by an obsession with logistics. Beginning with the company’s founding in 1962, Jesse LeCavalier reveals how logistics—as a branch of knowledge, an area of work, and a collection of processes—takes shape and changes our built environment.

Résumé:
"La Jetée", the legendary science fiction film about time and memory after a nuclear apocalypse, was released in 1964 and is considered by many critics to be among the greatest experimental films ever made. (It provided the basis for Terry Gilliam's 1995 film 12 Monkeys) Chris Marker, who is the undisputed master of the film essay, composed this postapocalyptic story almost entirely of black-and-white still photographs. The story concerns an experiment in recovering and changing the past through the action of memory, yet the film can be read as a poem dominated by a single moving image, which in its context becomes one of the supreme moments in the history of film. This Zone Books edition reproduces the film's original images along with the script in both English and French.

Résumé:
Samuel Mockbee and Coleman Coker have been practicing architecture together since 1986 through means both conventional and unique. The context of their work is the rural American South, images of which run throughout this monograph. They have created a remarkable and visually appealing collection of projects from indigenous imagery. Primarily residential, their architecture both reflects its vernacular surroundings and enriches its environment by transforming the commonplace into an object of beauty. "Mockbee Coker: Thought and Process" is the first book to be published on their work, bringing together their paintings, writings, and architecture. Projects presented in this monograph include the Barton House, Madison County, Mississippi; the Cook House, Oxford, Mississippi; the Kennedy House, Seaside, Florida; Magee Church of Christ, Magee, Mississippi; Flautt Tractor Shed, Leflore County, Mississippi; and Canton Fire Station No. 3, Canton, Mississippi.

Should architectural criticism be enlightening? What should be the ethical basis of it, and can it still be objective in the context of paid content? Should it outline ideal practices and help in the creation of a better built environment? Architectural criticism is at a crucial juncture today. Incisive architectural criticism is rare, while the definition of criticism itself has become more and more opaque in the digital world. The 2021 International Conference on Architecture Criticism has gathered exceptional papers that define the purposes and methods of architectural criticism of today. The resulting book is a collection of essays that offer essential independent voices on architecture criticism in a highly challenging media environment. Incisive and thought-provoking, ‘On duty and power on architectural criticism’ provides concrete case studies for future generations of architectural critics.

Résumé:
Little known among the general public, Alexander Henderson's work laid the foundations of the Canadian romantic landscape and its themes: the magic of winter, the endless lure of the country’s lakes and waterways, the metaphysical awe inspired by the vastness of its land and its great river. But Henderson also offered a colonial vision of the young North American city and documented a number of Canada’s major railway projects. This publication accompanies the first exhibition devoted to Henderson’s entire oeuvre and focusses on photographs that highlight the tonalities, textures, and clarity characteristic of the prints of the period. Texts explore Henderson’s biography, the sources and forms of romanticism evident in his landscapes, and the genesis of his work as a process of adaptation to the New World in a context of British imperialism.

Résumé:
Located on a triangular site within the Polanco area of Mexico City, the internationally acclaimed Museo Jumex exhibits a sizable collection of contemporary art—Colección Jumex—and is part of a wider urban redevelopment. The extremely individual quality of the neighboring buildings overrides any attempt to integrate the museum with its surroundings and instead allows for a rare architectural opportunity: the construction of a building that is simultaneously distinct from and complementary to its larger context. This publication delineates the design and construction of the museum, as conceived by the David Chipperfield Architects. It features photographs by Iwan Baan, texts by architecture scholars Miquel Adrià, Patrick Charpenel, Luis Fernández-Galiano and Beatrice Galilee, as well as a conversation between Hans Ulrich Obrist and David Chipperfield on the conceptual basis of the project.

Résumé:
Architect Hugh Maaskant (1907-1977) played a major role in modern Dutch architecture. He designed revolutionary, complex, large-scale buildings with metropolitan allure, like the Groothandelsgebouw and the Euromast in Rotterdam and the Scheveningen Pier. In Maaskant: Architect of Progress architecture historian and Maaskant expert Michelle Provoost places Maaskant in an international and historical perspective. Hugh Maaskant is considered the godfather and forerunner of the generation of Winy Maas (MVRDV), Adriaan Geuze (West 8), Willem Jan Neutelings and Rem Koolhaas. Yet he was underappreciated for many years. Provoost describes Maaskant’s work as part of the optimistic, stimulating aspect of post-war reconstruction and the exciting world of the 1960s. She also places him in the context of Dutch architecture, both of his time and of later generations, particularly the ‘Super Dutch’.
