Résumé:
The third volume in a four-part series on ALICE's teachings, ''Beyond the Object: The Imagination of Space'' follows up on ''The House 1 Catalogue'' and ''The Invention of Space'', proposing an alternative cultural history of architecture derived from the notion of spatial design rather than technical engineering and construction. Among the topics discussed are the common and scientific understandings of space and how they can be applied to contemporary architectural practice. Using Zurich as an exemplar of urban planning and development, the new volume combines fact with fiction to broaden the view upon future scenarios.

Résumé:
This handsome book explores the recent use of figurative characteristics in the design arts. Through digital literacy and enhanced fabrication techniques, this avant-garde movement has reintroduced hybrids of methods and ideologies that were once considered too ornamental in character or too handcrafted for the 20th-century minimalist design lexicon. Both large urban-scale architecture and the small domestic realm of design are employing this avant-garde vocabulary formally and figuratively in the terms of shapes and surfaces that evoke trees, tornadoes, parasols, photography, death, illness, food, music, and sensuality.

Résumé:
''Totems'' brings together ten texts by architect, historian, and critic Irénée Scalbert. Written between 2001 and 2025, they reflect nearly three decades of critical engagement with architecture and its cultural contexts. Ranging in length and register—from concise meditations to extended analytical essays—the collection captures the evolution of Scalbert’s thinking as a critic, teacher, and participant in architectural discourse. Organized thematically into sections on buildings, cities, and the environment, ''Totems'' traces a loosely autobiographical arc. Earlier pieces echo Scalbert’s formative years in London during a period of architectural ferment are marked by the work of James Stirling and Norman Foster, influential figures from Europe such as Aldo Rossi, as well as his close association with a generation of contemporaries including Peter St John (Caruso St John Architects), and Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald (6a architects). Later texts expand outward, both geographically and conceptually, as Scalbert brings a speculative and at times personal lens to questions of urbanism, nature, and meaning in contemporary architecture.

Résumé:
Cutural Cues is the sixth book featured the work of the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship, which brings young innovators in architectural design to the Yale School of Architecture. This book includes the studio research and projects of Joe Day of Deegan Day Design in “NOWplex” a cinema in L.A., Tom Wiscombe of Tom Wiscombe Architecture in “The Broad Redux,” for a new interpretation of the Broad Museum in L.A., and Adib Cure & Carie Penabad of Cure Penabade in the studio “Havana: Housing in the Historic Center.” The studios explore contemporary interpretations of the implications of cinema, the museum, and housing, taking cues from their complex cultural and urban contexts. Along with student work, interviews with the architects about the work of their professional offices and essays framing the themes of the work are combined with insight into the pedagogical approach of these practitioner-educators.

Résumé:
The age of multimedia constitutes a great challenge for libraries as they have to reinvent themselves to meet the constantly growing demands of digital applications. As a result, within the past decade, libraries have evolved from introverted hoards of knowledge to globally networked information and communication hubs. The architectural implementation of this transformation process has resulted in sophisticated buildings that succeed in combining impressive architecture with the complex contemporary requirements. The new edition of "Masterpieces : library architecture + design" shows that this process of transformation is far from over. Whether new building, conversion or extension, it presents new masterpieces of library design from around the world. The successful combination of contemporary architecture and cutting-edge technology is evidence that in the digital age, this type of building is as topical as never before.

Résumé:
Once the province of film and media scholars, today the moving image is of broad concern to historians of art and architecture and designers of everything from websites to cities. As museums and galleries devote increasing space to video installations which no longer presuppose a fixed viewer, urban space becomes envisioned and planned through "fly throughs," and technologies such as GPS add data to the experience of travel, moving images have captured the attention of geographers and scholars across the humanities and social sciences. Their practice of "mobility studies" is remaking how we understand a contemporary world in relentless motion. Media theorist and historian Anne Friedberg (1952-2009) was among the first practitioners of visual studies to theorize the experience of vision in motion. Her books have become key points of reference in the discussion of the windows that frame images and the viewers in motion who perceive them. Although widely influential beyond her own discipline, Friedberg's work has never been the subject of an extended study. "The Moving Eye" gathers together essays by renowned thinkers in media studies, art history, architecture, and museum studies to consider the rich implications of her work for understanding film and video, new media, visual art, architecture, exhibition design, urban space, and virtual reality.

Robert A. M. Stern is one of contemporary architecture’s most influential figures, with a career encompassing every facet of the profession As a preeminent force in the discourse of the field, Stern was one of the first critics to use and analyze the term “postmodern” in architecture. This collection of essays—Stern’s first—brackets the years defined by the changes in architectural thinking introduced by Robert Venturi in 1966 and the exhibition Deconstructivist Architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in 1988. Throughout, Stern provides close readings of architectural events and offers firsthand accounts of transformations in architectural thinking during a critical period.

Résumé:
What should our buildings look like? Or is their usability more important than their appearance? Paul Guyer argues that the fundamental goals of architecture first identified by the Roman architect Marcus Pollio Vitruvius - good construction, functionality, and aesthetic appeal - have remained valid despite constant changes in human activities, building materials and technologies, as well as in artistic styles and cultures. Guyer discusses philosophers and architects throughout history, including Alberti, Kant, Ruskin, Wright, and Loos, and surveys the ways in which their ideas are brought to life in buildings across the world. He also considers the works and words of contemporary architects including Annabelle Selldorf, Herzog and de Meuron, and Steven Holl, and shows that - despite changing times and fashions - good architecture continues to be something worth striving for. This new series offers short and personal perspectives by expert thinkers on topics that we all encounter in our everyday lives.
