Architect Lise Juel expresses how “Melancholy as a concept has been a useful perspective in understanding artists and artworks, but it remains underexposed in the field of architecture.” And yet, she continues, this is “not melancholic in its negative sense, but in the sense of a thoughtful and pensive approach to life.” Seventeen houses in Denmark are featured in this(...)

Résumé:
Architect Lise Juel expresses how “Melancholy as a concept has been a useful perspective in understanding artists and artworks, but it remains underexposed in the field of architecture.” And yet, she continues, this is “not melancholic in its negative sense, but in the sense of a thoughtful and pensive approach to life.” Seventeen houses in Denmark are featured in this issue, along with more than a dozen architectural offices that in turn reflect this melancholic perspective through their work, key to understanding Danish architectural practice, both traditionally and in the present. With work by Jeppe Utzon, LETH & GORI, Primus Architects, Atelier Lise Juel, and more.

Résumé:
For the French-Brazilian architect, theorist, and painter Sérgio Ferro, looking at architecture from below means putting the building site and building workers at the centre of architectural enquiry. Instead of new trends or big names, Ferro strives for an approach ‘that enables one to see both head and feet at the same time – the magnanimous ideal and the muck down below’. The process of building rarely features in architectural history and theory. Ferro argues that this persistent dismissal and neglect of building labour is no mere oversight, but instead a structural necessity of capitalist development which serves to deny labour as the source of value, to make capital’s command appear mandatory, and to maintain the profession’s capacity to act ‘on’ and ‘over’ the building site. Written between 1967 and 2019, these ten essays introduce Sérgio Ferro’s vital thinking by confronting architecture with critical theories ranging from Marx to contemporary authors. They draw on concrete cases in different historical and geographical contexts – from Strasbourg to Brasilia, via Dubai – to disclose how capitalist relations of production have transformed architecture and its relations to artistic practices such as painting and sculpture.

Résumé:
Eastern modernist architecture of the 60s and 70s is moving away from the specialized focus of international architecture debates and becoming a subject of discussion within the broader context of general interest. The excellent photos in the book convey the flair of an era in which planning was obviously the product of a collective vision, more so than is the case today. The photographic and documentation project compiled by Herta Hurnaus, who lives in Vienna, and the architects Benjamin Konrad and Maik Novotny analyzes the work of prominent Slovakian architects of the time in a photographic documentary and an "oral history. The monumental prestigious buildings are above all the most impressive at first glance, with their features that display parallels to the sculptural designs of popular contemporary offices. The illustrated book contains short interviews in an appendix and address architects and all those who are fascinated the aesthetic of the time.

Résumé:
For much of the 20th century, critique played an important part in what was considered 'modern' architecture; the canon of modern architecture considered itself dedicated to both formal progress and social critique. But as the 1960s spurred a rereading of modern architecture from a perspective informed by Marxism and the decade’s new social movements, many concluded that a building practice could not be critical, owing to its interdependent relationship with power and business. With recent economic crises hitting the building and property sectors, and research playing an increasingly large role in architectural practice, we are witnessing a renewed interest in critique in contemporary architecture, especially from postcolonial and feminist positions. The essays contained in this book, authored by a variety of international architects and thinkers, address this revived moment of critique, arguing that, far from being dead, architectural critique is now indispensable.

Résumé:
As teachers of architectural design, Kent Bloomer and Charles Moore have attempted to introduce architecture from the standpoint of how buildings are experienced, how the affect individuals and communities emotionally and provide us with a sense of joy, identity, and place. In giving priority to these issues and in questioning the professional reliance on abstract two-dimensional drawings, they often find themselves in conflict with a general and undebated assumption that architecture is a highly specialized system with a set of prescribed technical goals, rather than a sensual social art historically derived from experiences and memories of the human body. "Body, memory, and architecture" traces the significance of the body from its place as the divine organizing principle in the earliest built forms to its near elimination from architectural thought in this century. The authors draw on contemporary models of spatial perception as well as on body-image theory in arguing for a return of the body to its proper place in the architectural equation. With a contribution by Robert J. Yudell.
