The book ''Archive of Dreams'' is published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name that will open the ''Archiv der Avantgarden''. Marking the hundredth anniversary of the first surrealist manifesto and the founding of the Bureau of Surrealist Research in Paris in 1924, the volume is dedicated to the surrealist movement as well as the networks it engendered and the artistic stimuli it provided in the twentieth century. The idea was for the Bureau to collect dream testimonies in whatever form, not only to preserve and analyse them but also to give active expression to them in artistic processes. The publication shows how the practices of the avantgardes blurred the boundaries between dream and reality, between the traditional, passive notion of the archive and the idea of active, innovative artistic experiment — and thus ultimately also between the past, the present, and possible futures. Works and documents from the period before, during, and after the Second World War shed light on the working methods of international artists and the global network they were involved in. They are complemented by diverse reflections on global protest movements and the traumas of war, thus connecting, too, to everyday experiences in a Europe beset by warfare.

They transmuted the difficulties of capitalism into a repertory of startling images that revealed the disturbing realities of consumer society, even in those places still resistant to the penetration of modern architecture, such as Superstudio and Archizoom’s Florence. Their model, though exhausted in the space of experimentation, went on to inspire a generation of architects, from the High Tech movement to Rem Koolhaas.. In the light of these examples, how to define a unified 'dystopian' method of design, i.e. a common ground for an architecture that, by its very nature, seems to resist systematization? Are the most recognizable architectural expressions of this theoretical framework — characterized by brazen displays of technology and structures of overwhelming scale — merely isolated cases, albeit of particular iconic power? Or do they belong to a wider landscape of antirational architectural projects? And to what extent are these disturbing expressions premised on the utopian tradition or, better yet, the conceptual model of 'negative thought'? Pendant plus de 10 ans, ce projet mobilise la classe politique montréalaise, l’administration municipale, les élites culturelles, le monde de l’immobilier et celui du design. Son importance n’échappe à personne : le Quartier des spectacles sera, à Montréal, le grand projet urbain des années 2000. Le projet du Quartier des spectacles donne lieu à une discrète mais féroce bataille autour de l’imaginaire montréalais. Il transforme et renomme un espace mythique, tout à la fois ancien faubourg, Red Light, Quartier latin et pendant francophone du centre des affaires, et annonce une nouvelle manière de construire et d’occuper l’espace. Le Quartier des spectacles redéfinit la montréalité au XXIe siècle. Ce premier ouvrage consacré au Quartier des spectacles pose les bases d’une histoire du projet et propose une lecture multidisciplinaire de l’espace qu’il a produit. On y retrouve notamment des recherches inédites sur l’histoire de la mise en œuvre de projet, sur la place des artistes dans le quartier et sur la vie quotidienne de ses résidants. L’ensemble, hétérogène comme le Quartier des spectacles lui-même, offre une lecture polyphonique et cet espace voué à la représentation, mais dont la représentation reste encore à inventer.

Au tournant de l’An 2000 apparaît l’idée de créer, dans l’est du centre-ville de Montréal, un quartier des spectacles. Pendant plus de 10 ans, ce projet mobilise la classe politique montréalaise, l’administration municipale, les élites culturelles, le monde de l’immobilier et celui du design. Son importance n’échappe à personne : le Quartier des spectacles sera, à Montréal, le grand projet urbain des années 2000. Le projet du Quartier des spectacles donne lieu à une discrète mais féroce bataille autour de l’imaginaire montréalais. Il transforme et renomme un espace mythique, tout à la fois ancien faubourg, Red Light, Quartier latin et pendant francophone du centre des affaires, et annonce une nouvelle manière de construire et d’occuper l’espace. Le Quartier des spectacles redéfinit la montréalité au XXIe siècle. Ce premier ouvrage consacré au Quartier des spectacles pose les bases d’une histoire du projet et propose une lecture multidisciplinaire de l’espace qu’il a produit. On y retrouve notamment des recherches inédites sur l’histoire de la mise en œuvre de projet, sur la place des artistes dans le quartier et sur la vie quotidienne de ses résidants. L’ensemble, hétérogène comme le Quartier des spectacles lui-même, offre une lecture polyphonique et cet espace voué à la représentation, mais dont la représentation reste encore à inventer.

"Antiquity and its Interpreters" examines how the physical and textual remains of the ancient Romans were viewed and received by writers, artists, and cultural makers of early modern Italy. This volume reconsiders the complex relationship between the two cultures, in light of recent scholarship in the field a new appreciation and awareness of the act of history writing itself. The case studies analyze specific texts, the archaeological projects that made ‘antiquity’ available, the revival of art history and theory, and the appropriation of antiquities to serve social ideologies, among other topics. Demonstrating that the antique model was itself an artful contruct, "Antiquity and its Interpretors" shows that the originality of Renaissance culture owed as much to ignorance about antiquity as to an understanding of it. It also provides a synthesis of seminal work that recognizes the reciprocal relationship of the Renaissance to Antiquity. The museums examined in this book are Kunsthaus in Bregenz, the Museum of the Beyeler Fondation near Basel, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Moderna und Arkitektur Museet in Stockholm all opening within a year of one another. The Tate Gallery of Modern Art which is being built by Herzog & de Meuron in a former power station on the Thames in London is to be completed in May 1999. Conversations with the architects Frank O. Gehry, Jacques Herzog, Richard Meier, Rafael Moneo, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano and Peter Zumthor reveal the wide spectrum of design concerns in contemporary museum design and building. In the Pavilion at the Beyeler Fondation, the interaction of nature, light and the presentation of art is an impressive experience. Jean Nouvel perceives the museum as a public place, bringing the various areas of 'urban chaos' into contact with each other. A total of eight projects are presented.
