Résumé:
The celebrated British architect Sir John Soane (1753–1837) created his extraordinary house-museum from three properties in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London. There, in houses that embody both his architectural vision and his passion for collecting, Soane exhibited a marvellous array of artefacts, including an outstanding collection of plaster casts, and idiosyncratic items ranging from mummified cats to the sarcophagus of the Egyptian king Seti I. Soane intended the collection to be an ‘Academy of Architecture’ that would inspire students for generations to come, and today it continues to attract more than 90,000 visitors every year.Written by the present director of the museum and featuring specially commissioned photographs by Derry Moore, this absorbing account of a unique, perpetually surprising cabinet of curiosities offers a fascinating insight into the genius of an exceptional man.

Ten years after its initial publication, "Weather in the city" is more relevant than ever. Prolonged heat waves are a source of many stress-related problems, especially in densely populated areas. Certain wind phenomena in cities have also caused issues in the atmosphere. Based on these factors, Sanda Lenzholzer shows how basic climatic processes work in an urban environment, and how they can be influenced by spatial planning and urban design. This revised edition draws on current examples in demonstrating how the comfort of the urban environment can be enhanced using modern techniques and new methods. The book is both a reference work and a source of inspiration for all those engaged in creating a liveable city: be they clients, policymakers, professionals or students involved in urban design, landscape architecture and planning.

Résumé:
Taking a radical position counter to many previous histories and theories of the interior, domesticity and the home, "The emergence of the interior" considers how the concept and experience of the domestic interior have been formed from the beginning of the nineteenth century. It considers the interior's emergence in relation to the thinking of Walter Benjamin and Sigmund Freud, and, through case studies, in architecture's trajectories toward modernism. The book argues that the interior emerged with a sense of 'doubleness', being understood and experienced as both a spatial and an image-based condition. Incorporating perspectives from architecture, critical history and theory, and psychoanalysis, "The emergence of the interior" will be of interest to academics and students of the history and theory of architecture and design, social history, and cultural studies.

Résumé:
Designing Modern Britain demonstrates how interior design, ceramics, textiles, and furniture craft of the twentieth century contain numerous hallmark examples of British design. The book explores topics connected to the British design aesthetic, including the spread of international modernism, the eco-conscious designs of the 1980s and 1990s, and the influence of celebrity product designers and their labels. Buckley also investigates popular nostalgia in recent times, considering how museum and gallery exhibitions have been instrumental in reimagining Britain’s past and how the heritage industry has fueled a growing trend among designers of employing images of British culture in their work. A thoughtful look at the aesthetic heritage of a nation that has left its footprint around the globe, Designing Modern Britain will be a valuable text for students and professionals in design.

Résumé:
This poetic and minimalist anthology presents 10 years of heritage of AIRES MATEUS design studios at the Accademia di Archittettura di Mendrisio in Switzerland.100 images of largescale models built by students of AIRES MATEUS are brought together to create a family portrait. Each expertly staged model is pictured with the essential schemes necessary to understand the volumes portrayed. Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus’ many years of experience in pedagogy and the use of models in practice are brought together in a manifesto which precedes the anthology of images. The importance of the model in the formation of architectural ideas and throughout the design process, as well as its potency as a standalone statement are highlighted. The evocative photographs in this book reveal abstract spaces produced by artistic interpretations of light, volume and materiality.

Résumé:
The space we live in, reduced to a minimum, has been fascinating us for generations - the writer Thoreau lived in a self-built hut in the forest from 1845 - 1847. In 1952, Le Corbusier built a hut at the Côte d'Azur for himself and his wife. Inspired by this, Urs Peter Flückiger, together with his students, built an ecologically and economically sustainable cabin in the Texan prairie. All three projects share the idea of minimal space and its relationship with the surrounding nature. In text, drawings, and photographs, this book analyses the three projects and shows parallels and similarities. Inspired by Tolstoy s story How Much Land Does A Man Need? , the author asks: How much house does a man need?, thereby providing a pointed contribution to the current discussion on the requirement for housing.

Résumé:
'Craft Becomes Modern: The Bauhaus in the Making' looks at the Bauhaus from the perspective of this noisy activity — handcraft. No term was more fiercely disputed there. Although conceived as “laboratories for industry,” a great deal was still done by hand in the Dessau workshops. Workshops at the Bauhaus straddled the different priorities and practical realities at play, falling somewhere between factory and craft business, between free experimentation and industrial contract work. From this field of tension, the Bauhaus tried to define handcraft anew as a utopian pursuit that could coexist with industrial culture. The Bauhaus’ interest in industrialization has been thoroughly studied; the persistence of craft among its teachers and students much less so. Craft Becomes Modern surveys this aspect of the Bauhaus’ teaching and work, and puts it in historical context.

Résumé:
The Codewriting Workbook introduces students and practi-tioners to basic programming concepts for computer-aided design (CAD). Through a series of guided exercises and examples, readers learn how to develop and write procedures for creating two-dimensional drawings and three-dimensional models using a variety of algorithmic functions. Each exercise begins with a simple concept and evolves into a family of possible solutions. A primer on programming, The Codewriting Workbook presents efficient methods for computing singular results that, when compounded, generate the broadest range of design possibilities. Though exercises are presented in AutoLISP, the workbook outlines general processes for structuring procedures that can be adapted to almost any CAD-based scripting language. Robert J. Krawczyk is on the faculty of the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
