Throughout, designers, landscape architects and lighting engineers are included in the architectural category, as their working structures, contractually defined to provide a quantifiable design service to the client, are alike. The works are assembled according to their design concept and arranged in eight sections, which identify the most important characteristics of each project. 'Barometer' focuses on the connection of the work to its natural environment, and 'Passage' investigates the relationship of space perception to physical movement. 'Reflection' looks at the suggestive power of the double image, and 'Light' compiles examples of the material quality of luminous matter. The manipulation of our habitual point of view is the subject of the chapter called 'Observation', while 'Excavation', as the title suggests, deals with the exploration of negative space. Born in Austria, Elisabeth Wild (1922-2020) fled to Argentina during WWII with her parents. In 1962 the family escaped the regime of Juan Peron and found a new home in Basel, Switzerland. Wild opened an antique shop at St. Johannstor which became the outlet for her creativity at the time and also supported her and her family financially. Until her death at the age of 98, Wild was carefully crafting her light-hearted, joyous abstract worlds walking the line between construction and deconstruction. Alongside her daughter, Vivian Suter, Wild has exhibited at Kunsthalle Basel, documenta 14, and the Powerplant in Toronto.

Esther da Costa Meyer provides a major reassessment of this ambitious project, which resulted in widespread destruction in the historic center, displacing thousands of poor residents and polarizing the urban fabric. Drawing on newspapers, memoirs, and other archival materials, da Costa Meyer explores how people from different social strata?both women and men?experienced the urban reforms implemented by the Second Empire. As hundreds of tenements were destroyed to make way for upscale apartment buildings, thousands of impoverished residents were forced to the periphery, which lacked the services enjoyed by wealthier parts of the city. Challenging the idea of Paris as the capital of modernity, da Costa Meyer shows how the city was the hub of a sprawling colonial empire extending from the Caribbean to Asia, and exposes the underlying violence that enriched it at the expense of overseas territories. Bridget Riley’s paintings are developed carefully over time, the result of methodically working through pictorial variables such as color, tone, scale, and rhythm. Studies are central to this process, allowing Riley to concentrate on the analysis and synthesis that lie at the heart of her working practice. This volume illustrates the thinking that goes into Riley’s work through a selection of over 150 drawings, colour analyses, notations, scale studies, and cartoons. The selection spans most of Riley’s working life, tracing the origins and evolving nature of her remarkable body of work. Riley’s beginnings are also documented through selected childhood drawings, work made during and immediately following her studies at Goldsmiths’ College and the Royal College of Art, and her early explorations into abstraction. The artist’s working method is brought into high relief in a newly commissioned conversation with Riley and Sir John Leighton, Director of the National Galleries of Scotland. The text explores the cardinal moments in the artist’s practice and the impulses that bring her work into existence. The skateboarder’s approach to a sculpture, more mechanical than conceptual, brings out the variety of movement it seeks to suggest. While it is not possible to ''freeze'' or represent movement in a solid form (it cannot be sculpted) it is, nevertheless, a constituent element of the work, as also is space. While his portfolio includes the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Miles Davis, he is perhaps best known for capturing the light, color, and gesture found in every day life. This unique vision kept him busy for over 40 years shooting annual reports, magazine covers, jazz albums, advertising and more for an array of clients worldwide. Recently, Maisel has gone back to his archive of early work, and put together a collection of black-and-white images he made as a young man in the 1950s, evidence of a lifetime’s pursuit of a craft and a special talent, one of the best-kept secrets in photographic history. “New York in the ‘50s” is a beautifully-produced monograph that will be equally appreciated by Jay Maisel’s followers, and anyone who has stepped inside his muse, New York City.

His work challenged the notions of public and private space, originality, authorship and—most significantly—the authoritative structure in which he functioned. Now in its second edition, Gonzalez-Torres’s editor Julie Ault has amassed a comprehensive monograph of this important artist. In the spirit of the artist’s method, Ault rethinks the very idea of what a monograph should be.
