Résumé:
For centuries, cities have grown and expanded onto previously saturated grounds; 'reclaiming' land from estuaries, marshes, mangroves, and seabeds. While these artificial coastlines are sites of tremendous real estate, civic, and infrastructural investments, they are also the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. ''Terra-Sorta-Firma'' documents the global extent of reclaimed coastal lands, and provides a framework for comparison across varying geographies, cultures, and histories. It renders visible the ubiquity and precarity of urban coastal reclamation in an age of increased environmental and economic indeterminacy. The five parts of the book question urbanism’s political, economic, and physical binary relationship to wet and dry grounds in search of a new understanding of land in a state of permanent flux. This book challenges designers, developers, policymakers, engineers, and urbanists to reconsider the design and construction of land itself, and to re-imagine this most fundamental of all infrastructures along a gradient of inundation.

Résumé:
Faced with an ecological crisis of existential proportions, the economic relations of capitalism have only fanned the flames. The transformation of property relations is an urgent necessity, but not, in itself, enough to save us. Enter 'degrowth': a concept that radically challenges contemporary life, culture and economics as we know it. Through an impressive synthesis of the traditions of eco-Marxism and feminist ecological economics, Éric Pineault presents a well-rounded critique of contemporary capitalist growth and its socio-ecological contradictions, in which growth is understood as both a biophysical and accumulation process. The book provides fresh answers to key questions of current socio-ecological debates: Why does capitalist society depend on accelerating growth? Why is the constant upscaling of its economic process necessary for its social stability? How does this deepen the ecological contradictions that humanity now faces? And what can we learn from this for our understanding of emancipatory futures?

Résumé:
This urban research project examines the often overlooked areas known as "barrios," "shantytowns," or "slums" and assesses their validity as an architectural phenomenon in their own right. The hills outside Caracas are dotted with transient, dilapidated structures which are home to thousands of people who create their own socio-economic environment, one which has a unique place in the city's infrastructure. This publication can be understood as a handbook of informal urban and cultural practice. Its validity extends far beyond Caracas and encompasses nearly all Latin American metropolises. Its essays question the value of traditional Western-style socio-economic and socio-political structures, present a new form of urbanism as a subject for discussion, and show the need for a profound change in our understanding of urban culture, especially in today's era, which is characterized by increasing insecurity and uncertainty. This project was jointly initiated by the "Federal Cultural Foundation" of Germany and the "Urban Think Tank" in Caracas, Venezuela.

Résumé:
The Bank of England symbolizes the economic strength, influence, and potency of Britain. Founded in 1694, its world-famous buildings were built and rebuilt four times by different architects, most notably Sir John Soane. The Bank’s three-and-a-quarter-acre complex has included elegant public banking halls and private offices, courtyards and gardens, warehouses and vaults, residential apartments and guards’ barracks. This illustrated book examines for the first time the entire architectural history of the Bank from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries. Drawing on a variety of perspectives, the book relates the history of the Bank of England to current debates on English economic, social, and urban history, including issues of national identity, mercantile politics, and the commercialization of culture. The book also shows how the building itself has expressed various historical tensions among the Bank’s inhabitants and publics: its directors and detractors, its clerks and clientele, its tourists, and even its mob attackers.

Résumé:
A "new alliance" is being forged between designers and commercial property developers, who are championing progressive design, in projects as diverse as apartment blocks, houses, hotels and offices. While some architects are taking a proactive role in development, others are cutting out a new position for themselves as designer-developers. This is all happening at a time that property developers are starting to recognise the added value that an architect can bring to a scheme. By taking a truly international look at the projects architects and developers are achieving together, this publication explores the economic and demographic opportunities that are now driving architect-developer alliance in cities as diverse as Amsterdam, Hong Kong, London, Malmo, Melbourne, Montréal, New York, Phoenix and Tokyo. As architects and property developers break boundaries together, they are also beginning to transcend an established pattern of notorious and longstanding ill will. Could this herald a new age of economic saviness in architecture and an appreciation of design input in development?

Résumé:
High-population centers of enormous size are springing up in China with dizzying speed. With them comes an increased demand for migrant workers in the construction sector, factories, and mines. In growth centers like the Pearl River Delta in Southern China, 40 million people have already set out from the underdeveloped provinces to earn their living there. The photographer Andreas Seibert accompanied the workers repeatedly in order to document their everyday lives and their journey to the high-population centers. Their stories are told in a collection of striking photographs that provide a close-up portrait to complement the current discussion of economic growth in China. Accompanying the photographs are texts by two Chinese authors, who researched the social and economic background of the phenomenon and provide a direct look. With its combination of text and images, this volume conveys a unique impression of the scale of this modern migration of peoples.

Résumé:
The history of the book in Tibet involves more than literary trends and trade routes. Functioning as material, intellectual, and symbolic object, the book has been an instrumental tool in the construction of Tibetan power and authority, and its history opens a crucial window onto the cultural, intellectual, and economic life of an immensely influential Buddhist society.Spanning the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, Kurtis R. Schaeffer envisions the scholars and hermits, madmen and ministers, kings and queens who produced Tibet's massive canons. He describes how Tibetan scholars edited and printed works of religion, literature, art, and science and what this indicates about the interrelation of material and cultural practices. The Tibetan book is at once the embodiment of the Buddha's voice, a principal means of education, a source of tradition and authority, an economic product, a finely crafted aesthetic object, a medium of Buddhist written culture, and a symbol of the religion itself.

Résumé:
Young German photographer Arne Schmitt’s black-and-white depictions of Cologne’s urban architecture, old and new, harken back to the theme-oriented photo-books of the 1950s and ’60s, which functioned as both political and social critique. Schmitt focuses his camera on the urban fabric of Cologne created by neo-liberal policies after WWII, inspired by the physical collapse in 2009 of the Stadtarchiv, Europe’s largest and oldest historical city archive. Built in the 1970s, the Stadtarchiv’s structural failure could be seen as symbolic of the disastrous consequences of the neo-liberal economic policies in Germany, the U.S. and Britain that led to the 2008–9 global economic collapse. Critiques of neo-liberalism often run into difficulty because they lack a clearly defined object of focus. Faced with structural complexities, their analysis and criticism is often directed toward isolated instances. Schmitt confronts this political conversation with the resolutely straightforward approach of the documentary eye.

Résumé:
''Spatializing justice'' calls for architects and urban designers to do more than design buildings and physical systems. Architects should take a position against inequality and practice accordingly. With these thirty short, manifesto-like texts—building blocks for a new kind of architecture—Spatializing Justice offers a practical handbook for confronting social and economic inequality and uneven urban growth in architectural and planning practice, urging practitioners to adopt approaches that range from redefining infrastructure to retrofitting McMansions. These building blocks call for expanded modes of practice, through which architects can imagine new spatial procedures, political and economic strategies, and modalities of sociability. Challenging existing exclusionary policies can advance a more experimental architecture not bound by formal parameters. Architects must think of themselves as designers not only of things but of civic processes, complicate the ideas of ownership and property, and imagine new sites of research, pedagogy, and intervention. As one of the texts advises, ''The questions must be different questions if we want different answers.''
