Résumé:
In 1947, the president of the American Sociological Association, Louis Wirth, argued for the importance of housing as a field of sociological research. Now, seventy-five years later, the sociology of housing has still not developed as a distinct subfield, leaving efforts to understand housing’s place in society to other disciplines, such as economics and urban planning. With this volume, the editors and contributors solidify the importance of housing studies within the discipline of sociology by tackling topics like racial segregation, housing instability, the supply of affordable housing, and the process of eviction. In doing so, they showcase the very best traditions of sociology: they draw on diverse methodologies, present unique field sites and data sources, and foreground a range of theoretical approaches to elucidate the relationships between contemporary housing, public policy, and key social outcomes. ''The sociology of housing'' is a landmark volume that will be used by researchers and students alike to define this growing subfield, map continued directions for research, and center sociologists in interdisciplinary conversations about housing.

Résumé:
Rubbing two sticks together produces heat and light while one stick alone is just a stick. It is the friction that produces movement, action, and effect. Anthropologist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing challenges the widespread view that globalization invariably signifies a clash of cultures, developing friction as a metaphor for the diverse and conflicting social interactions that make up our contemporary world. Tsing focuses on the rainforests of Indonesia, where in the 1980s and 1990s capitalist interests increasingly reshaped the landscape not so much through corporate design as through awkward chains of legal and illegal entrepreneurs that wrested the land from previous claimants, creating resources for distant markets. In response, environmental movements arose to defend the rainforests and the communities of people who live in them. Not confined to a village, province, or nation, the social drama of the Indonesian rainforests includes local and national environmentalists, international science, North American investors, advocates for Brazilian rubber tappers, United Nations funding agencies, mountaineers, village elders, and urban students—all drawn into unpredictable, messy misunderstandings, but misunderstandings that sometimes work out.

Résumé:
Following the blockbuster success of ''Wicked Arts Assignments'', ''Wicked Arts Education'' helps teachers and creatives design exciting arts educational programs from scratch. These arts programs foster a meaningful connection between the culture of the student, the arts and society. The included arts educational design strategies have been tested in a variety of settings around the world and were found to be helpful in challenging arts educators to explore curriculum ideas collectively, creatively and productively. In a time of individualization and polarization, this volume underlines the power of collective learning about, in and through the arts. Though ''Wicked Arts Education'' can be used to create personalized learning trajectories, it also advocates building learning communities in which students and teachers share interests, expertise and opinions. ''Wicked Arts Education'' can be used in a variety of educational contexts: from primary to higher education, and for arts curricula inside and beyond schools. The book is not only for educational settings, however, but intended for a wide-reaching audience that includes anyone wanting to work collectively with others on a creative project.

Since starting their practice in 1986, Iranian-born, American-educated sisters Gisue and Mojgan Hariri have earned widespread praise for their ambitious body of work. Their up-to-the-minute recasting of classical modernist principles has made them a source of continuing inspiration to design students and professionals alike. Over the course of recent years, the Hariris' portfolio has expanded from small-scale commissions to widely celebrated projects, including the much lauded "Digital House" and the first house to be completed at The Houses at Sagaponac, the ambitious Hamptons development. Among the projects featured in Hariri & Hariri: Houses—illustrated in plans, drawings, and splendid full-color photography—are a new house for the AQUA development in Miami Beach; spectacular urban renovations in New York City; and magnificent new houses across the country, as well as international projects, all of which demonstrate the ability of the Hariris to combine modernist rigor with what New Yorker architecture critic Paul Goldberger identified as an "understanding of the patterns of everyday life."

Résumé:
Among distinguished contemporary designers, Alessandro Mendini is perhaps most deserving of the overused title of Renaissance man. Painter, writer, architect, theorist, designer: his work in all these fields has influenced generations of other artists and craftsmen and delighted even those who don’t know his name but have entered his spaces (like his stores for Alessi and Swatch), sipped from his espresso cups, and rested in his chairs. Through his work as a founder of Studio Alchimia in 1979 and editor of the magazines Casabella, Modo, and domus, Mendini has fought the strictures of modernism and championed the expressive value of decoration, which is the foundation for the development of his designs. This book offers a window into Mendini's working methods by presenting some 2,000 of his introductory designs, sketches, and texts that would eventually be realized as objects and buildings. This one-of-a-kind archive is both an important contribution to the history of design for scholars and students and a source of inspiration for designers and artists.

From Matthew Brady to Cindy Sherman, 150 artists are represented in this new, combined volume of "Photography Speaks", spanning the entire history of the medium. This compendium contains biographical information and an original statement from each artist, accompanied by an example of their work. A favourite with photographers and requisite course material for many students, the discourse on art and artistry contained in this volume is of unprecedented scale - collecting the writing of such diverse photographers as William Henry Fox Talbot, Eugène Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Lewis Hine, August Sander, Man Ray, Weegee, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Robert Heinecken, and Lucas Samaras. New additions include selections from Nadar, William Eggleston, Eikoh Hosoe, Gordon Parks, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Christian Boltanski, Thomas Struth, and Rineke Dijkstra. The contributors expound upon topics such as their method and intentions, the state of the arts, or the medium itself. "Photography Speaks" has been and will continue to be a vital reference source, an enduring testament to the art of photography, and an engrossing text for artists and enthusiasts alike.

Résumé:
"Twentieth-Century Type" surveys the significant issues that have shaped the history and evolution of typography and graphic design, showing how current typographic trends are part of a continuously changing movement that can be plotted through the decades. Generously illustrated with over three hundred examples–more than two hundred of which are in color–the book charts significant topics including the arrival of mass-production; the birth of the art director; the appearance of the grid (and its subsequent rejection); the coming of non-print media; and the launch of the Macintosh computer and its ushering in of a new generation of designers enfranchised by digital technology. This revised edition of a fundamental work brings the story up to date with new text and images covering type on screen and, in particular, type for the internet. Combining an assessment of the culture of experimentation in contemporary typographic design alongside a clear presentation of the field’s historical context, the book is an informed and accessible source for all students of design and for designers needing an expert overview of typography.

Résumé:
What can be done to create a mental and physical connection of the HafenCity and the river Elbe to the city of Hamburg and its inhabitants? This was the guiding idea of an international competition of 15 schools of architecture of three continents. The responsibles for the town planning of Hamburg and especially the HafenCity are convinced that the city of Hamburg has to abandon a part of its old attractive harbour and must give up the partly reserved attitude concerning the river Elbe. Consequently initiated by the architect and professor Dr. Peter Sturzebecher, Hamburg faces new ideas that have officially opened a reflection among the students and their professor about the new centre of the HafenCity and, in addition, about the second motorway bridge crossingthe harbour south of the Elbe. The resultats of the competition being presented close to the official model of the whole HafenCity in october 2003, results that are seen by thousands, have incited political courage and a certain destabilisation giving room for critical questions concerning the actual planning.

Résumé:
George Nelson (1908-1986) was a pioneering modernist who ranks with such outstanding American designers as Raymond Loewy, Charles Eames, and Eliot Noyes. Nelson's office produced some of the twentieth century's canonical pieces of industrial design, many of which are still in production: the ball clock, the bubble lamp, and the sling sofa. Nelson also made major contributions to the storage wall, the shopping mall, the multimedia presentation, and the open-plan office system. The author of this definitive biography was given access to Nelson's office archives and personal papers. He also interviewed more than seventy of Nelson's friends, colleagues, employees, and clients, and obtained many previously unpublished images from corporate and private archives. The full range of Nelson's work is represented, from product and furniture design to packaging and graphics to large-scale projects such as the Fairchild house and the 1959 American National Exhibition in Moscow. Because Nelson was a serious and original thinker about design issues, Abercrombie quotes extensively from his published and unpublished writings, offering provocative new material to students of design theory and philosophy.

Résumé:
Critical theories such as those of the Frankfurt School of the twenties and thirties gave rise to a complex and sophisticated critique of modernity and modernism. The history and theory of twentieth-century architecture, which developed rather independently of this rich tradition, appear naive and unbalanced in comparison. In this exploration of the relationship between modernity, dwelling, and architecture, Hilde Heynen attempts to bridge this gap between the discourse of the modern movement and cultural theories of modernity. On one hand, she discusses architecture from the perspective of critical theory, and on the other she modifies positions within critical theory by linking them with architecture. She assesses architecture as a cultural field that structures daily life and that embodies major contradictions inherent in modernity, arguing that architecture nonetheless has a certain capacity to adopt a critical stance vis-à-vis modernity. The book provides architectural students with an introduction to the discourse of critical theory. The subchapters on Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, Theodor Adorno, and the Venice School (Tafuri, Dal Co, Cacciari) can be studied independently.
