Résumé:
This book is based on a conference sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts with the Woodrow Wilson Center concerning strategies for the reuse of dead malls in America's first-ring suburbs. Originally celebrated as community centers, the substantial commercial success of the early suburban shopping center was fleeting, as subsequent generations of ever-larger malls have left behind a landscape of struggling and boarded- up shells. This pervasive condition is presented in the context of the history of public space and the shopping mall. The book includes essays by Robert Fishman, Benjamin Barber and Margaret Crawford and innovative projects for the strip and mixed-use developments by such architects as RoTo, Lewis, Tsurumaki, Lewis, ShoP and Gary Handel + Associates. A roundtable with developers and bankers on obstacles to the redevelopment of failed shopping centers is also included. The review of case studies and projective work is intended to foster a more serious examination of new models for making and using public space.

Résumé:
The concept of sustainability requires environmentally friendly and socially acceptable methods of production and use, and this is no less true in the construction branch. Since the mid-1980s international organisations have been advocating the concept and since the environmental summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 it has become the centre of worldwide attention. In the context of architecture the concept calls for the use of intelligent technology, innovative constructions, ecologically friendly materials and use of energy which looks to the environment. This book sets out with an overview of the various approaches and developments in sustainable architecture, followed by an in-depth section on urbanism looking at several European towns. In the third section the technologies, materials and methods of ecological architecture are examined. Concluding the volume are 23 sophisticated and innovative examples from Europe which include works of Metron, Behnisch & Partner, Sonia Cortesse, Ian Ritchie, and Kauffmann Theilig & Partner amongst others.

Résumé:
"Hors-Sol" is a record of poster interventions by artists in public spaces in Switzerland from 1961 to the present day. The poster is usually a medium for commercial messages, but here it is used to convey new meanings, some of which are more firmly anchored in the context of art, others explicitly aimed at advertising. These unusual intrusions are disturbing and cause people to reflect on the conditions in which art and PR function, the use and effect of the mass media, the occupation of public spaces, and personal roles in different contexts. In historical comparison, they function as a mirror of the time and reveal a great deal about changing social conditions. The poster campaigns that took place in the 1960s and 1980s seemed to be impressively explosive and alarmingly direct, whereas today's artistic forays into the poster as a medium are evidence that PR aesthetics and the art world are coming into line, both formally and rhetorically.

Résumé:
In this first book on the work and vision of the architecture firm Schaum/Shieh, founders Troy Schaum and Rosalyne Shieh invite their readers into the studio. This is a real and conceptual space where they work on recurring themes: operating within the city at the scale of building (urbanism); the interrelation of materiality, units of form, and building products (tectonics); and ways to collaborate with the life of a building in its context (preservation), among others. In addition to visual material drawn from all stages of the design process, what is equally important to "Blanking" is what is said and what can be heard in the studio. So much of architectural thinking and knowledge is presented, formulated, and traded in spoken words: the pinup, the meeting, the walkthrough. This material is the medium within which projects are formulated. Those exchanges inform this book, in which ideas and knowledge that are usually only spoken are written down and made accessible to readers.

Résumé:
Some of the earliest canals in colonial America, referred to as the ''Inner Passage'', were constructed by enslaved people living in the Lowcountry of South Carolina in the early 1700s. In a paradox of history, for over a hundred years enslaved Black people used these canals, constructed for white plantation owners, to travel southward to freedom in Spanish Florida. In this book, Virginia McGee Richards documents the lost narrative of the ''Inner Passage'' through 60 extraordinary photographs of landscapes altered by slavery and portraits of Lowcountry descendants, along with an essay describing her discovery of this untold history. In an accompanying essay, Imani Perry writes about her own journey on the ''Inner Passage'', putting Black resistance to enslavement and Southern history into an immediate context. James Estrin brings decades of insight about photography and the power of visual storytelling to his affecting foreword. Together, these words and images offer a powerful living map of history.

Résumé:
Architects W.G. Clark and Charles Menefee III, inspired by the "thin shacks and sheds of insubstantial beauty" of the Southern vernacular building tradition, are known for structures that are at once modest, rigorous, and economical in detail. They blend the ease and informality of the architecture of the historic South with the elegance of end-of-the-century modernism. This balance between continuity and change is evident throughout their work. This monograph of 13 projects--eight built, five unbuilt--reveals the architects' ideas and intentions while reflecting the spirit they bring to each design. Projects such as Middleton Inn, Croffead House, Lucy Daniels Foundation, Charleston Bus Stops, and 8 Bedon's Alley are presented through duotone photographs and drawings, which exemplify the simplicity and rigor of the architects' work. The author's critical analysis of each project highlights associations to vernacular buildings and the local historic context. Clark and Menefee dissolved their professional practice last year, making this book the complete and only overview of their work.

Résumé:
In "Each Wild Idea", Geoffrey Batchen explores a wide range of photographic subjects, from the timing of the medium's invention to the various implications of cyberculture. Along the way, he reflects on contemporary art photography, the role of the vernacular in photography's history, and the Australianness of Australian photography. The essays all focus on a consideration of specific photographs--from a humble combination of baby photos and bronzed booties to a masterwork by Alfred Stieglitz. Although Batchen views each photograph within the context of broader social and political forces, he also engages its own distinctive formal attributes. In short, he sees photography as something that is simultaneously material and cultural. In an effort to evoke the lived experience of history, he frequently relies on sheer description as the mode of analysis, insisting that we look right at--rather than beyond--the photograph being discussed. A constant theme throughout the book is the question of photography's past, present, and future identity.

Résumé:
''LBA Architecture and Planning'' is an architectural practice based in Macau, co-founded by architects Rui Leão and F. Carlotta Bruni. The firm specializes in designing projects that integrate contemporary architecture with the historical and cultural context of the region. LBA has contributed to shaping Macau’s urban and architectural identity during the past 20 years of rapid urbanization. The intellectual contributions of LBA are further evidenced through their spatial narratives that integrate complex urban contexts with culturally sensitive design strategies. The firm emphasizes the importance of creating spaces that harmonize with their surroundings while addressing the functional needs of modern urban living. This approach is particularly relevant in Macau, where the juxtaposition of old and new is a defining characteristic of the city. Their work in Macau serves as a testament to their capacity for thoughtful integration of historical contexts and innovative design, contributing significantly to the evolving identity of the city.

Résumé:
''Concéntrico: Urban Innovation Laboratory'' reflects on the first decade of the international Concéntrico festival and the one hundred and fifty projects and designs commissioned for it. The festival’s aim is to serve as a laboratory searching for creative ways of using architecture and design to strengthen communities and to support the dialogue between designers and citizens. The book offers a unique meditation on the transformation of cities and the relevance of architecture and design in the twenty-first century. It introduces meaningful ways to address and engage with pressing urban issues—from identity and heritage to temporariness, collectivity, ecology, play, and domesticity—through the lens of selected Concéntrico commissions since 2015. Through lavishly illustrated essays, it features projects by eighty artists, architects, and designers from twenty countries. They are prefaced and held together by a conversation between the editors Javier Peña Ibáñez and Nick Axel, who speak about the festival’s context, evolution, and the knowledge it has produced since 2014.

Résumé:
From fashion sketches of smartly dressed Shanghai dandies in the 1920s, to multipanel drawings of refugee urbanites during the war against Japan, to panoramic pictures of anti-American propaganda rallies in the early 1950s, the polymorphic cartoon-style art known as manhua helped define China's modern experience. ''Manhua Modernity'' offers a richly illustrated, deeply contextualized analysis of these illustrations across the lively pages of popular pictorial magazines that entertained, informed, and mobilized a nation through a half century of political and cultural transformation. In this compelling media history, John Crespi argues that manhua must be understood in the context of the pictorial magazines that hosted them, and in turn these magazines must be seen as important mediators of the modern urban experience. Even as times changed—from interwar-era consumerism to war-time mobilization to Mao-style propaganda—the art form adapted to stay on the cutting edge of both politics and style.
