Résumé:
Vancouver is heralded around the world as a model for sustainable development. In "Planning on the edge," nationally and internationally renowned planning scholars, activists, and Indigenous leaders assess whether that reputation is warranted. While recognizing the many successes of the "Vancouverism" model, the contributors acknowledge that the forces of globalization and speculative property development have increased social inequality and housing insecurity since the 1980s in the city and the region. To determine the city’s prospects for overcoming these problems, they look at city planning from all angles, including planning for the Indigenous population, environmental and disaster planning, housing and migration, and transportation and water management. By looking at policies at the local, provincial, and federal levels and taking reconciliation with Indigenous peoples into account, "Planning on the edge" highlights the kinds of policies and practices needed to reorient Vancouver’s development trajectory along a more environmentally sound and equitable path.

This book travels back and forth in time through scenes of erasure at three primary locations—Southwest, Washington DC (displacement); North St Louis (demolition), and South Los Angeles (extraction). "Erasure by design" shares first person narratives of growing up in the wake of slum clearance—that is, "urban renewal"—in Southwest, Washington DC, while assembling archival references that narrate racialized erasure and its legal and spatial precedents. It traces a military complex under construction, where St Louis’s cleared grounds and blacked out sites are also defined by satellites, body experiments, explosions, and emptiness. It moves through specific grounds in Los Angeles—dirt walls, hills, oil fields, gas lines, and houses in the forest—to trace how those grounds matter and how their holding intersects with maps that plan erasure, inhabitation, and extraction.

In 2018, the Urbanarium held the Missing Middle Competition to invite explorations of ideas to address Metro Vancouver’s housing affordability and social well-being challenges and to increase density incrementally on sites of one or two standard residential lots. Enter the Mixing Middle Competition, which included mixed-use in the program of gentle densification. Conceived in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the changes to the way people lived in their neighbourhoods and worked from their homes made evident the many ways that residential zoning might be adapted to support and enhance these changes and bring shops, services, and jobs within short walkable trips from homes.

In 2018 Urbanarium held an international design competition to develop and present exciting options for addressing Metro Vancouver’s unprecedented housing affordability crisis and social health challenges with outstanding design and social innovation. This document contains both the insight and policy recommendations gathered from the various competition entries for adding innovative density to existing single-family zones. Included are the winning projects located in one of four sites in Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Burnaby and Surrey. Results from this competition inform the “Policy Impact Proposal,” suggesting five small shifts in current zoning policy that can contribute to housing affordability and vibrancy in communities, while maintaining existing character.

Résumé:
Encampments occupied by unhoused and precariously sheltered people have proliferated in recent years in cities and towns across Canada. While right-to-housing legislation and other rights protections exist on paper, their minimal legal force has left municipalities mostly free to use policing and bylaw enforcement to remove encampments from public spaces. The result is unnoticed but devastating violence against highly vulnerable people who have no choice but to survive in public spaces. Anti-encampment bylaws raise the question of what legal and moral rights unhoused people have to live in public space. ''The Bylaw State'' shows that bylaws are powerful municipal instruments. Far from being innocuous laws enforced by municipal workers, bylaws have quietly emerged over the last two decades as the method of governing homelessness in Canada. Case studies in Prince George and Vancouver demonstrate the extraordinary expansion of municipal bylaws and the place of courts in defending the legal rights of homeless people to take up public space. Legal scholar Alexandra Flynn and sociologist Joe Hermer explain how municipalities create an exclusionary ideal of public space through evictions and banishment, and they make a powerful case for a more inclusive approach that protects people not just spaces.

Emerging from the curatorial project FUORI! (Bologna, 2022-2023), this book brings together a series of interviews with theorists, artists, and performers. It focuses on the political, social, and community-based role of contemporary art. This anthology brings together a vibrant constellation ofauthors who reflect on how art can spark encounters, reclaim public space, and nurture shared agency across generations. Rehearsing a City for All celebrates art's powers to enhance civic action—by fostering temporary collectivities, by practicing affective gestures and spells of resistance, and by expanding the stories, struggles, and imaginations that define who gets to shape a city.

Résumé:
Homelessness is one of the most pressing social challenges of our time, and is closely linked to issues of urban design and architecture. Homeless people are part of urban society and depend on accessible public spaces and urban infrastructure. Yet, in cities around the world, local governments use policies and urban planning to ward off street people, aiming at making them invisible in the cityscape and deliberately impeding certain forms of stay. Urban design always reflects power structures—it can exclude or open up avenues for participation. ''The Roofless Truth'' brings together contributions by international researchers and practitioners from the fields of architecture, urban development and design, sociology, ethnology, social work, and education. It offers academic analyses and essays, field reports, and student proposals for interventions in public space, and features award-winning projects and initiatives in Canada, Germany, Iran, Switzerland, and the US. The book highlights how public spaces should be designed to offer protection, dignity, and opportunities for homeless people, and to facilitate encounters and interaction. The featured examples impressively demonstrate that even the smallest spatial decision can determine inclusion or exclusion. ''The Roofless Truth'' paints a multifaceted picture of planning and design as a social practice beyond representation and prestige.

Résumé:
With the development of the first skyscrapers in the 1880s, urban built environments could expand vertically as well as horizontally. Tall buildings emerged in growing cities to house and manage the large and racially diverse populations of migrants and immigrants flocking to their centers following Reconstruction. Beginning with Chicago's early 10-story towers and concluding with the 1931 erection of the 102-story Empire State Building, Adrienne Brown's ''The Black Skyscraper'' provides a detailed account of how scale and proximity shape our understanding of race. Over the next half-century, as city skylines grew, American writers imagined the new urban backdrop as an obstacle to racial differentiation. Examining works produced by writers, painters, architects, and laborers who grappled with the early skyscraper's outsized and disorienting dimensions, Brown explores this architecture's effects on how race was seen, read, and sensed at the turn of the twentieth century.
