Résumé:
From fashion sketches of smartly dressed Shanghai dandies in the 1920s, to multipanel drawings of refugee urbanites during the war against Japan, to panoramic pictures of anti-American propaganda rallies in the early 1950s, the polymorphic cartoon-style art known as manhua helped define China's modern experience. ''Manhua Modernity'' offers a richly illustrated, deeply contextualized analysis of these illustrations across the lively pages of popular pictorial magazines that entertained, informed, and mobilized a nation through a half century of political and cultural transformation. In this compelling media history, John Crespi argues that manhua must be understood in the context of the pictorial magazines that hosted them, and in turn these magazines must be seen as important mediators of the modern urban experience. Even as times changed—from interwar-era consumerism to war-time mobilization to Mao-style propaganda—the art form adapted to stay on the cutting edge of both politics and style.

Résumé:
The architecture of the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s was integral to shaping 20th-century modernism. Russian architect Konstantin Melnikov (1890–1974) was a key figure of this movement, with many of his realized projects, such as his cylindrical residential house completed in 1929, becoming modernist icons. Because he refused to conform to architectural standards after Stalin's cultural turn in 1932, his works were largely forgotten for several decades. He was rehabilitated and received public recognition for his imaginative constructions only a few years prior to his death in 1974. This publication presents models of Melnikov's built and unbuilt works, created under the direction of scholar Pavel Kuznetsov by the students of the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. The models are accompanied by photographs, sketches and project descriptions expanding on Melnikov's work. An essay by Kuznetsov situates the architect in his historical context, shedding light on an underappreciated figure of architectural history.

Résumé:
Helin & Co, one of Northern Europe's leading architectural firms, has been a key player in Helsinki's transformation into a modern metropolitan region for over 20 years. They understand architecture as work for the future combining the human scale (‘Heart’) with a constant engagement with the urban space on the waterfront (‘Horizon’). The firm works in a context-sensitive and resource-efficient manner. The focus is on combining functionality, urban vibrancy and (archi-)tectonic precision. Three key projects also highlight this approach in the exhibition: Kamppi Centre – a networked urban quarter in the heart of Helsinki with mobility hubs, cultural and residential areas; Kalasatama Centre – a new urban centre at the former harbour that combines density and sea views; Sello District Centre in Espoo – a multifunctional centrepiece with a library, music school and concert hall. Together, they form places that interweave living, working and culture in Helsinki into an open, maritime urban experience.

Résumé:
Through the lens of various disciplines, ''Violent Images'' investigates the politics of visual violence and its potential to provoke, subvert, and transform social, political, and media discourses. The artists and scholars invited to contribute to this image-text publication discuss "The Whiteness of Silicon Valley's Digital Ecologies" (Stephanie Polsky); "Gender and Violence in News Media and Photography" (Roland Bleiker and Emma Hutchison); transgressive image-making practices (Monica M. Haller), and more. All the contributors critically examine established and emerging visual concepts of violence, suggesting that our engagement with them is inherently political and more pressing than ever. Continuing Giulia Cordin and Eva Leitolf's exploration begun with ''Landscape with(out) Locus'', ''Violent Images'' explores the intricate relationship between visual culture and the social and economic conditions that influence and are influenced by it. It illustrates the need for a more critical and engaged approach to visual representation and communication in the context of local and global conflicts and crises.

Résumé:
This book represents the fruits of a year long forum carried out in the Delft School of Design (Faculty of Architecture, University of Technology Delft). The papers in this collection are gathered from renowned visiting scholars, faculty members, and doctoral candidates who contributed to workshops, seminars and lectures. The essays contained in this volume contribute to matters which have come to increasingly shift our understanding of architecture and urbanism. The authors offer insight on urban processes and the aesthetic challenge for contemporary design in relation to image, technology and life sciences. Contributions include discussion on : the structure of the network city in terms of temporal manipulations; the virtual emergence and resilience of contemporary urban place in the context of Beijing; the practice of the 'production of space' is detailed with a study of Nowa Huta, Poland, a post communist city and a phenomenological account of habitat and the urban body is presented in relation to Bogotá.

Résumé:
Crossover is the very first publication by the Delft School of Design (DSD), a laboratory for research and experimentation in architecture, urbanism and technologies of construction at the TU Delft. Its investigations cover a wide variety of subjects, from theoretical considerations and historical studies to urban and architectural practices and contemporary structural design. What they all have in common is the emerging condition of architectural and urban knowledge in both the academic context and professional practice. Since its inception in 2003, the DSD has developed a strategy or field of inquiry for mapping new means of approaching the complexity of the contemporary urban and architectural conditions. Traditional approaches are seen to be increasingly inadequate in the face of this complexity. This is in part due to the nature of the information age. Yet, on the other hand, new technologies offer us the challenge and the potential to represent our world in unprecedenteded ways.

Résumé:
Drawing on architecture, performance art, history and visual theory, ''In search of African American space'' explores the creative relationship between the African diaspora and social space in America. Illustrated with vintage adverts, maps, posters and architectural plans, and organized thematically, this anthology, edited by Jeffrey Hogrefe and Scott Ruff at the Pratt Institute in New York, is divided into three sections. The anthology is organized thematically, presenting African American space in a broad cultural context. The section ''The monument, memorial, and mundane,'' explores the analytical methods of architects Scott Ruff, Yolande Daniels, Rodney Leon, Elizabeth Kennedy, Sara Caples and Everardo Jefferson, who have dedicated their studies and practices to examining spatial typologies related to the African diaspora. As architects working directly in the afterlife of slavery, conscious of spatial performances of opposition in relationship to architecture, they introduce their own interpretations of African American space from their personal experiences and a dedication to an aspect of practice that has been operating largely outside of the academy.

Résumé:
''Working in Mumbai'' is a critical reflection on thirty years of the practice of RMA Architects. Rahul Mehrotra weaves a narrative to connect his multiple engagements in architectural practice, including teaching, research, documenting, writing and exhibiting since the establishment of the practice in 1990. The book is structured around the subjects of interior architecture, critical conservation, and work and living spaces that straddle the binaries of the global and the local as well as the rural and the urban. While the book is a portfolio of the selected works of RMA Architects, the projects are curated so as to unravel and clarify the challenges faced by architects in India and in several parts of the “majority” world where issues related to rapid urbanization and the impacts of global capital are among the many that dispute conventional models of practice. ''Working in Mumbai'' is used emblematically to interrogate the notion of context and understand how the practice evolved through its association with the city of Mumbai.

Résumé:
This guidebook showcases 150 buildings from the past 100 years starting with one of the most influential urban projects ever: the Gran Vía. This main avenue marked a milestone for Madrid which went from being a historic city to the modern capital that it is today. This intervention had been ongoing for almost two decades with the initial phase of construction reaching completion circa. 1917. A selection of the most relevant buildings thereafter until the present day sheds light on Madrid’s architecture in relation to its inherent historical context, including the need for the reconstruction of built heritage after the Spanish Civil War, the influence of the Franco dictatorship lasting for almost forty years, and the new materials and collaborative architecture that have arisen during the current economic crisis, among other aspects. Seven proposed routes lead us through the different districts that make up the city, as well as those historic epochs that have made Madrid the city it is today.
