Résumé:
The Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP), directed by Dirk Denison from within the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), promotes an academic award that is given to the best architecture built in the American continent during a specific period. ''MCHAP The Americas 2: Territory & expeditions,'' is inspired on the discussions held during the second cycle of the prize, which took place in 2016. Based on the selection of the finalist projects—Weekend House by SPBR, New Campus for the UTEC by Grafton Architects, Pachacamac Museum by Llosa Cortegana Architects, Tower 41 by Alberto Kalach, Star Apartmens by Michael Maltzan Architecture, and Grace Farms by SANAA—, the jury conversations and ''discoveries'' were very much conditioned by the ideas of nature and its intimate relation to architecture and landscape. This book is part a reader, part a catalogue, part a visual essay/research on these matters. The texts and projects are in themselves contributions to the field as they show new understandings about the relationship between architecture and its environment as well as singularities and genealogies of the most prominent architectures of the Americas.

This book explores in detail twenty-four churches in ten countries throughout Western Europe, built between 1900 and 1950. Contemporary photographs and floor plans help readers identify the unique characteristics of each building, and are complemented by texts outlining the churches' architectural highlights. The author discusses the Modernist period from its genesis in the Art Nouveau movement, while theologians explore the subject of Catholic and Protestant liturgies and their relationships to the buildings. Together with its companion volume, "European church architecture 1950-2000", this survey is a milestone in the literature on ecclesiastical architecture.

Résumé:
"Practice practice" addresses the parallel trajectories of cooperatives in the United States and the professionalization of architecture. This contextual background highlights the coincident struggles of the labor movement and the emergence of the architectural corporation. Within this context, the cooperative model is presented as a challenge to the prevailing conditions of the profession. Logistical frameworks for creating an architectural cooperative-- including diagrams, sample operating agreements, and bylaws-- are offered for any firm looking to transition or incorporate anew. The book projects the social, economic, and aesthetic benefits of the architectural cooperative by taking stock of cooperatives in other industries. Finally, "Practice practice" presents a vision for a cooperative network of small architecture firms as imagined in collaboration with the Architecture Lobby.

Résumé:
The essays are based on papers given at a symposium in Copenhagen in June 2008 and refer to the following considerations: When spectators confront and designers invent works of art and architecture, vital questions regarding their appearance arise. These are not simply questions about what appears, also what does not, i.e. what withdraws when works are experienced and created. How do we cope with this withdrawal, with latencies that escape concretization? What are the productive paradoxes associated hereto and how do they influence the processes of making? Based on multiple discourses on these subjects, contemporary positions in art, architecture and philosophy draw up new challenges, especially with regard to the creative practices. Within and between these positions emerge potentials for modes of thinking and doing with a new sensitivity. With contributions by Michael Asgaard Andersen and Henrik Oxvig, Renaud Barbaras, Andrew Benjamin, Olafur Eliasson, Sanford Kwinter, David Leatherbarrow, Martin Seel, David Summers, and Sven-Olov Wallenstein.

Résumé:
The issue of race in architecture is a com-plicated and often divisive one. Traditional methods of architectural history and theory tend to attribute a city's civic and cultural identity to the dominant culture. Ignored are more marginal cultures without a tradition of public building, often preventing a complete understanding of the city and the forces that shape it. These essays explore the historic and contemporary effects of race upon the development of the built environment, and examine the myths and realities of America's racial landscapes. Its multidisciplinary approach identifies and interprets the black cultural landscape, examining its visual, spatial, and ideological dimensions. Contributors to this collection include Nathaniel Belcher, Felicia Davis, Sheryl Tucker deVasquez, K. Ian Grandison, Bradford Grant, Walter Hood, Lesley Lokko, Mabel O. Wilson, and Amy Weisser.

Résumé:
This book is the result of research carried out at the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design of the University of Campania ‘Luigi Vanvitelli’ and thanks to funds from the PON Green and Innovation project. The aim of this work was the desire to investigate a new theory of reuse at a time when space is corrupted by traces of the recent past resulting from speculation and ‘easy building’. The paradigm of architecture’s function is changing and the project must be in dialogue with the possibility of architecture having many more lives than what it was imagined for, perhaps returning to being what it has always been, an organism ready to be everything and composed of layers of time, just as the history of architecture has taught us by building on the built without fear.

Résumé:
If participation has been an ideal in politics since ancient democracy, in art it became central only with the avant-gardes emerging from WWI and the Russian Revolution. Politics and aesthetics are still catching up with each other. In the 21st Century, since the revolutionary unrest of the 1960s, participation in art and architecture has lost its utopian glow and become the focus of a fierce debate: does ‘participatory’ art and architecture shape social reality, or is it shaped by it?Contemporary critics see in participation only technocratic control, while others embrace it as a viable politics in an era of global capitalism. This volume breaks the impasse by looking at how participants themselves exert power, rather than being victimized or liberated from it. From artists hijacking Google Earth to protesters setting up a museum of the revolution in Cairo, art, architecture, and daily life are explored in their participatory dimension.

Résumé:
To confront the Anthropocene, designers must increasingly move between scales and across disciplines to develop new structures of knowledge and tools of representation: from the embodied to the technical, the investigative to the projective. Ultimately, this volume asks: What stakes are embedded in contemporary architectural environmental media, and how are designers re-imagining this media landscape today? Chapters in the book explore counter-cartographies of migration and materials, forest ecologies and theories of abundance, hyperreal visualization and environmental simulation, architecture’s extractive and colonial systems, and pedagogies and practices for environmental futures. This book organizes these efforts into three threads of media practice: rendering visible, rendering sensible, and rendering actionable. While these categories are inextricably intertwined, they represent distinct tactical approaches to media production, each exploring possible methods to develop new knowledge systems, shift aesthetic regimes, and transform collective politics.
