Résumé:
This volume captures work by policy analysts and researchers in urban and regional planning, political science, economics and related fields. By looking at issues such as economic interdependencies, global competitiveness and intergovernmental relationships, the book is an attempt to understand how cities and their suburbs are dependent on each other and to point to possible avenues for the construction of effective regional policies. The papers were presented originally at a September 1998 conference cosponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Lincoln Institute and the Brookings Institution Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy.

The Irving Oil Company has long played an important role in the economic and cultural landscape of Eastern Canada. Its holdings, ranging from the country's largest refinery to the western hemisphere's first deep-water terminal, also include the ubiquitous Irving gas station. Thaddeus Howlonia, with his trademark panoramic photography, has documented dozens of these structures over twenty five years, often photographing the same station years apart. His work reveals the complex interaction these boxy modernist structures with their material clutter have with a region known for its traditional, picturesque vernacular.

With its rich architectural heritage, immense physicality, and multilayered history, architects working in London must grapple with financial constraints amid the economic promotion of private development. Guest-edited by Andrew Clancy and Marwa el Mubark, the projects presented here revisit typical architectural programmes. Through diverse approaches and ranging from terrace house and warehouse renovations to adaptive reuse, all contribute to the complexity and enduring fascination of this city.

This volume investigates impact of these vast industrial estates on landscape and society from various perspectives. It reveals the architectural and spatial, legal, economic, social, and environmental ramifications of the logistics system in this region and elsewhere. It examines the ensembles of windowless steel boxes on three scales: as an architectonic-landscape entity the size of a small town, as a network that reshapes the map of Europe so to define its own territoriality, and as part of the everyday life of the workers inside and the residents around them.

Résumé:
In this book, Dutch graphic designer Ruben Pater uses clear language and visual examples to show how graphic design and capitalism are inextricably linked. Capitalism could not exist without the myriad banknotes, documents, infographics, interfaces, branding, and advertisements created by graphic designers. Even anti-consumerist strategies such as social and speculative design are appropriated to serve economic growth. Design, it seems, is locked in a cycle of exploitation and extraction, furthering global inequality and environmental collapse. Featured are six radical design cooperatives that resist capitalist thinking, hoping to inspire a more socially aware practice.
