Résumé:
Since the first volume was published, the subject of patterns has continued to evolve: colorful patterned wallpapers have returned to private homes; patterns have become a determining factor in graphic design and architecture; and designers are asked to design an ever-increasing variety of new ornaments and pattern repeats. Patterns 2 provides the necessary inspiration. It describes current trends, presents contemporary experiments, and situates the development within the cultural-historical context. For this follow-up volume the editors have broadened the focus. In addition to architecture, design, and art, Patterns 2 now contains patterns from fashion and the sciences. These include graphic representations of whale songs and genetic codes and the latest creations of fashion designers like Paul Smith and Eley Kishimoto.

This book brings together three exceptional German visionaries of early modernism: the novelist, poet, and inventor Paul Scheerbart, architect Bruno Taut, and architect and artist Paul Goesch. All three men were wildly creative, offering unprecedented meldings of art and architecture into fantasias of invention that spoke directly to the concerns of the early Weimar Republic—while anticipating many of the architectural and artistic innovations of the decades that followed.

Résumé:
Tangible Traces proffers context, craftsmanship and tradition as antidotes to our seamless global landscape of bland architecture and design. The architecture firm Onix, spatial designer Frank Havermans, textile designer Claudy Jongstra, fashion designer Alexander van Slobbe and industrial designer Hella Jongerius share a common quest to imbue their work with unexpected meaning derived from consideration of local culture and context, rediscovery of traditional craft, use of quotidian materials and a fascination with chance and improvisation. Though they look to the past for inspiration, a fusion of state-of-the-art technologies and an unmistakably Dutch vision lends their designs a contemporary air.

The Brutalist aesthetic is enjoying a renaissance — and this book documents Brutalism as never before. In the most wide-ranging investigation ever undertaken into one of architecture's most powerful movements, more than 850 Brutalist buildings — existing and demolished, classic and contemporary — are organized geographically into nine continental regions. Much-loved masterpieces in the UK and USA sit alongside lesser-known examples in Europe, Asia, Australia, and beyond — 102 countries in all, proving that Brutalism was, and continues to be, a truly international architectural phenomenon.

Résumé:
Montage has been hailed as one of the key structural principles of modernity, yet its importance to the history of modern thought about cities and their architecture has never been adequately explored. In this new work, Martino Stierli charts the history of montage in late 19th-century urban and architectural contexts, its application by the early 20th-century avant-gardes, and its eventual appropriation in the postmodern period. With chapters focusing on photomontage, the film theories of Sergei Eisenstein, Mies van der Rohe’s spatial experiments, and Rem Koolhaas’s use of literary montage in his seminal manifesto Delirious New York (1978), Stierli demonstrates the centrality of montage in modern explorations of space, and in conceiving and representing the contemporary city.
