Iñaki Ábalos and Juan Herreros established the renowned architectural firm Ábalos & Herreros in Madrid in 1984. At the time, following the end of the Franco regime, architects were valued more for their technical ability than for their contributions to theoretical research. In this context, Ábalos and Herreros’s melding of design with a range of publications and curatorial projects presented a remarkable challenge to assumptions about the role of an architect. In 2012, the Canadian Centre for Architecture obtained the Ábalos & Herreros archive, which contains documents related to more than 160 projects. The material comprises sketches, slides, models, collages, and drawings. The archive presents a compelling opportunity to reconstruct Ábalos and Herreros’s planning and design process. Each of the book’s three contributors—two of whom worked with Ábalos and Herreros—approaches the archive with specific questions, and their essays explore topics including the architects’ fascination with industrial architecture, their capacity to construct a hybrid materiality without recourse to building technology as language, and their innovative visions for landscape architecture.

On 4 May 1968, a few hours after angry student protesters in Paris had caused the Sorbonne to be evacuated, the exhibition ''50 Years Bauhaus'' opened at the Württembergischer Kunstverein. Conceived by Herbert Bayer, Ludwig Grote, Hans Maria Wingler and Dieter Honisch, the then director of the Kunstverein, the show is still regarded as the most influential post-war exhibition on the Bauhaus. Fifty years after the opening of '50 Years Bauhaus'', the Württembergischer Kunstverein undertook a critical re-reading of the 1968 exhibition, with a particular focus on the ambiguous relationship that various prominent members of the Bauhaus had with National Socialism and the murky connections between the art avant-gardes and the military-industrial complex. While the 1968 exhibition historicized the reception of the Bauhaus, reducing it to West Germany and the US, the publication 50 Years After 50 Years of the Bauhaus reflects on the famous school in the context of artistic movements like the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus and the Situationist International.

These fundamental causes of urban planning and buildings were ignored in the second half of the 20th century thanks to the enormous use of fossil energy by heating and air conditioning systems, pumps and refrigerators, that today cause the greenhouse effect and global warming. The fight against climate change forces architects and urban designers to take seriously the climatic issue in order to base their design on its the local climatic context and energy resources. Faced with the climatic challenge of the 21st century, we propose to reset our discipline on its intrinsic atmospheric qualities, where air, light, heat or humidity are recognized are real materials of building, convection, thermal conduction, evaporation, emissivity, or effusivity are becoming design tools for composing architecture and cities, and through materialism dialectic, are able to revolutionize esthetic and social values.
