Résumé:
''Towards territorial transition'' presents new spatial strategies, concepts, and approaches for shaping large-scale and transnational developments in architecture and urban design towards decarbonization and ecological transition. The contributions investigate interactions between ecological and resource-related systems and landscapes. They also explore potential solutions to address and deal with the dramatic threats posed by climate change and the emerging social crisis. The book introduces six basic terms of territorial transition—territory, scale, transition, resource, platform, and uncertainty—and visualizes them with spatial strategies elaborated at the École nationale supérieure d’architecture Versailles and at Graz University of Technology. Moreover, it presents a selection of transnational projects of territorial transition, such as Luxembourg in Transition (Luxembourg / France), Grand Genève (Switzerland / France), and Top Noordrand (Belgium).

Résumé:
Architecture and construction are at a turning point. They account for more than 40% of global CO2 emissions. Rising temperatures can only be reduced if there is a radical change in the field of construction throughout the world. However, how should we design our cities, buildings and living spaces so that we can get closer to the goal of decarbonisation? The book gives 20 architects and urban planners their say on the future of construction. Voices are heard from Mexico to Kenya – from Bangladesh to Switzerland. In the interviews experts give an account of their own experiences with climate-friendly construction as well as regional problems posed by rising CO2emissions. They explain pioneering projects and combine them with their personal desire and political ideals.

Résumé:
"Promenades" is both a treatise on the relationship between architecture and photography and the first book to focus on the work of the Swiss architectural firm Bauart Architects and Planners. The firm commissioned a variety of photographers working in landscape or architecture to document nine of their projects throughout Switzerland, from houses, schools, and government and office buildings to entirely new neighborhoods. Each of the photographs represents a personal, wide-angled view of a project, drawing on the rich legacy of nearly two centuries of architectural photography. An essay by Markus Jakob explores the relationship between photography and architecture in the context of the firm’s work over the course of three decades, which carefully accounts for ecology and urban and social context.

Résumé:
Turner's sketchbooks were private things which he kept to himself. They might live for some time, rolled up in his coat pockets or travel bags, to be pulled out as need arose. In the studio, they served as memory banks for future work. The sketchbook reproduced within this publication includes watercolour sketches Turner made on his trip to Lucerne in Switzerland capturing the beautiful Rigi mountain, a landscape he returned to again and again. Drawn back to the mountains, Turner made these sketches after the famous The Blue Rigi, Sunrise 1842, and they reveal his masterful hand as he portrays the ever changing moods of the Swiss-Alps, depicted through rainy showers, sunbeams filtering through clouds and rainbows cast across the blue mountain peaks.

Résumé:
Wassily Kandinsky is often recognized as the first artist to paint shapes and colors without regard to visual references in the world. However, abstract paintings were being produced even before Kandinsky’s experiments with the form. In the middle of the nineteenth century, in England, Sweden, and Switzerland, respectively, Georgiana Houghton, Hilma af Klint, and Emma Kunz each developed their own abstract pictorial language. Though working completely independently from one another, these three artists shared a desire to make visible the laws of nature, the intellect, and the supernatural. Working within the context of the spiritual movements of their times—Houghton in Spiritism, AF Klint in theosophy, and Kunz in naturopathy—they each produced abstract paintings that bore witness to a “mediumistic” praxis.

They explain pioneering projects and link them to personal wishes and political ideals. The result is a multi-layered kaleidoscope of different perspectives, wishes and hopes for an architecture that fulfils the climate goals.

Résumé:
Georg Rauh (1906–1965) enhanced the Eastern Swiss architectural landscape with his work. His oeuvre, comprising around 100 buildings, is characterized by the considered placement of volumes, sensible floor plans and a subtle choice of materials. A clear programme is discernible: reduction and functionality, fully in the spirit of Bauhaus teaching. The trained carpenter studied at the Bauhaus Dessau under Hannes Meyer and Ludwig Hilberseimer, before graduating in 1932 under Mies van der Rohe. After returning to Switzerland, he worked as a teacher at a vocational school and subsequently as an architect for social housing. This catalogue of works documents his architectural heritage and its key buildings, which are portrayed by comparing the original plans, as well as in images and photographs by Ladina Bischof.

Résumé:
Books about architectural model-making as a discipline of its own are few and far between. The present publication therefore presents detailed portraits of around twenty model-making workshops in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, providing ready reference and giving architects easy access to information about modern methods of architectural model-making. The changes affecting the model-making profession in the age of computer-aided design are discussed and, in an introductory essay by writer and historian Ansgar Oswald, the role this centuries-old craft played in the context of European architecture from the Renaissance to the present day is portrayed. The book speaks up for architectural model-making as an indispensable stage in the design process and an expressive means of decision-making.

Résumé:
The present renewal of garden art demands a new approach to garden aesthetics. This book considers exceptional creations around the world and proposes new forms of garden experience. Using a variety of critical perspectives, the authors demonstrate a renewal of garden design and new directions for garden aesthetics, analyzing projects by Fernando Chacel (Brazil), Andy Goldsworthy (Great Britain), Charles Jencks (Great Britain), Patricia Johanson (U.S.), Dieter Kienast (Switzerland), Bernard Lassus (France), and Mohammed Shaheer (India). The first half of the volume begins with an argument for a return to John Dewey's focus on "Art as Experience", while the second half concludes with a debate on the respective roles of cognition and the senses, and of science and the visual arts.
