Résumé:
The town is an organism created and driven by people. The complexity of the problems arising from it poses a challenge to those in positions of responsibility. Basing their research on the assumption that responsibility can be taken, Oswald and Baccini seek to create clarity in the web of urban phenomena. They present a highly original model which draws together the two separate fields of architecture and science by considering architecture and urban planning from the scientific perspective. In four main chapters topics such as new urbanism, the net city, designing with the net-city method, sustainability, renovation, conversion, and responsibility are explored in detail. The examples presented all derive from Switzerland, but the analyses and methodology is valid for any region or country. The theory is complemented by attractive visual material.

Wesley Willis (Chicago, 1963 – 2003) began his artistic career singing on the street, accompanied by his Technics KN 2000 keyboard. He was soon playing opening slots for local bands, and later recording songs as an homage to these performances (i.e. "Urge Overkill", "Swervedriver", "Foo Fighters", "The Frogs"). In 1989, Willis was diagnosed as schizophrenic; he explains that writing, performing, and recording help quiet the voices in his head. Most of his exposure came as an internet phenomenon during the early days of peer-to-peer file sharing. The Exhibition WW vs. GRRRR was first realized in St. Gallen (Switzerland) and then went to s'Hertogenbosch (Holland) and Giza (Egypt). It combines the first retrospective of Willis’s oeuvre with an extensive selection of work by the young Swiss artist Ingo Giezendanner. 2001 is edited by Urs Lehni.

Résumé:
The Madrid-based studio Gutiérrez-delaFuente Arquitectos (GdlF) takes on a paradoxical challenge: in an almost entirely built urban landscape, they care for the unbuilt environment. Instead of focusing only on new architecture, the team led by Natalia Gutiérrez and Julio de la Fuente adapts existing spaces, revealing their hidden potential. Their approach – working with the already-there – understands the unbuilt as a crucial component of an ecological transformation. The exhibition at Aedes, curated by Kaye Geipel and Gutiérrez-delaFuente Arquitectos, presents sustainable strategies for improving in-between spaces through selected projects in Germany, Belgium, Spain, the UK and Switzerland. A central element is the film installation European Encounter Cabinet, in which international experts close to the studio share their perspectives on the future of architecture and urban planning in European cities and territories.

Résumé:
What if museum critics were challenged to envision their own exhibitions? In this publication, fourteen authors from disciplines throughout the social sciences and humanities propose exhibitions inspired by their research and critical concerns to creatively put theory into practice. Pushing the boundaries of museology, this collection gives rare insight into the process of conceptualizing exhibitions. The contributors offer concrete, innovative projects, each designed for a specific setting in which to translate critical academic theory about society, culture, and history into accessible imagined exhibitions. Spanning Australia, Barbados, Canada, Chile, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland, and the United States, the exhibitions are staged in museums, scientific institutions, art galleries, and everyday sites. Essays explore political and practical constraints, imaginative freedom, and experiment with critical, participatory, and socially relevant exhibition design.

Résumé:
This volume presents the ArtLab project, which highlights the intersection of science, art, and the public at the Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Switzerland. Designed by the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, ArtLab is a symbolic place of art, culture, and technology. The project combines three structures: the first is a welcome area to learn about the university's research, the second structure is an exhibition space that hosts art installations, while the third pavilion houses the newly digitized Montreux Jazz Festival archives and a café. The three pavilions are connected, constituting a single building with a folded roof, a topographical flow, and a hybrid steel and wood frame. ArtLab is located near buildings by SANAA and Dominique Perrault, forming a new heart for the EPFL campus.

Résumé:
Marco Bakker and Alexandre Blanc established their architectural firm, BABL Bakker and Blanc Architects, in Switzerland in 1992. At their offices in Lausanne and Zurich, they develop designs that are modest yet reflect the high demands of the built environment. ''Darwin’s theatre: BABL at work'' documents more than twenty-five years of the firm’s work and demonstrates their vision and approach through a selection of thirty-four built and unrealized designs. Inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s famous painting of the Tower of Babel, the book is conceived as a chronological spiral stairway to heaven that represents the evolution of eternal questions concerning space and time. This innovative concept reflects BABL’s continuous work on recurring questions and the realization that each of their projects is an iteration of earlier ideas.

Résumé:
This poetic and minimalist anthology presents 10 years of heritage of AIRES MATEUS design studios at the Accademia di Archittettura di Mendrisio in Switzerland.100 images of largescale models built by students of AIRES MATEUS are brought together to create a family portrait. Each expertly staged model is pictured with the essential schemes necessary to understand the volumes portrayed. Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus’ many years of experience in pedagogy and the use of models in practice are brought together in a manifesto which precedes the anthology of images. The importance of the model in the formation of architectural ideas and throughout the design process, as well as its potency as a standalone statement are highlighted. The evocative photographs in this book reveal abstract spaces produced by artistic interpretations of light, volume and materiality.

Résumé:
When cars emerged in the last century, people began connecting their cities through roadways. In the course of time, a narrow grid of roads originated. But what permits great mobility is, in the urban context, a barrier to urban relations and movement flows beyond the use of cars. The urban potential lying in these residual spaces is explored by the experimental design studio of professor Lafranchi at Burgdorf University for Applied Sciences, Switzerland. Documented in this book, the project of a research center and a world of experience “Fascination of automobile and traffic” by Lukas Ingold and Fabio Tammaro is based, in its constructive design, on concepts of automotive engineering as well as the parameters of the loop-shaped dynamics of a highway hub with its streets, ramps, bridges, and residual surfaces.
