Parametricism implies that all elements and aspects of an architectural composition or product are parametrically malleable; and the style owes its original, unmistakable physiognomy to its unprecedented use of computational design tools and fabrication methods. All design parameters are conceived as variables that allow the design to vary and adapt to the diverse, complex and dynamic requirements of contemporary society. Although Parametricism has been talked about and hotly debated for a number of years, so far there has been no publication dedicated to Parametricism. Sustainable design and ecological building are the most significant global challenges for the design profession. To meet new building regulations and national targets for carbon emissions, all future buildings will be judged on their ‘green’ merits. For architects to maintain a competitive edge in a global market, innovation is now key; the design of new processes, technologies and materials that combat carbon emissions and improve the sustainable performance of buildings are paramount. Contemporary practices have responded by setting up multi- disciplinary internal research and development teams, with offices such as Foster + Partners, HOK and Aedas setting the bar for ground-breaking research and development. The aim of internal groups is often to adapt and create new technologies and materials and to borrow ways of working from other disciplines, to focus on innovation rather than incrementally increasing performance or efficiency. This title offers insights into how a wide range of established and emerging practices are rising to meet these challenges. In pursuit of integrated sustainability and low-energy building, material and formal innovation and new tools and technologies, it illustrates that the future of architecture is evolving in an exchange of ideas across disciplines. Incorporating the creation of new knowledge about ecological building within the profession, it also identifies the emergence of a collective will to seek out new routes that build in harmony with the environment.

The developments featured in this book, however, should serve to correct this impression. Between 1999- 2002 Electricité de France (EDF) initiated an ambitious research programme to bring together first-class architects and innovative technologies involving renewable energy, strategies to reduce energy consumption, newly developed software programs to support ecologically oriented architectural design etc. The goal was to create sustainable and aesthetically pleasing architecture. This book documents the buildings, some of which have already been realized, resulting from this experiment which attracted participation from both established and also younger architects. Amongst those included are Jean-Yves Barrier, Gilles Bouchez, François Chochon, Adrien Fainsilber, Jacques Ferrier, Manuelle Gautrand, Christian Hauvette, Dominique Lyon & Pierre du Besset, Marc Mimram, François Roche, François Seigneur & Sylvie de la Dure, Francis Soler, Mirto Vitart & Jean-Marc Ibos. With an interview by Lee Chin-Wei + Herbert Wright, this theme analyses Rooftop Greenhouse Agrotopia by van Bergen Kolpa architects + META architectuurbureau, urban agriculture on top of a hybrid building by Kuehn Malvezzi and the Taisugar Circular Village (Taiwan). With increasing concerns of sustainability, this issue shows as well a series of sustainable work environments in Italy and Norway: the Furla Headquarters by GEZA Architettura, La Manufacture for Céline by MetroOffice Architetti and Vestre's sustainable factory The Plus in the Norwegian woods by BIG. The 7000 m2 building will be a global showcase for sustainable and highly efficient production and an experience destination for people around the world.
