Résumé:
Mexican architect and painter Juan O'Gorman (1905–82) had a spectacular debut as an architect, designing his own house at the age of 24. On the strength of this building, Diego Rivera commissioned O'Gorman to design a pair of studio-houses for himself and Frida Kahlo on contiguous lots, connected by a bridge. But O'Gorman was somewhat forgotten in histories of modern architecture, until the restoration of Rivera's and Kahlo's house in the late 1990s led to a rediscovery of the architect's work and a reappraisal of his place in contemporary Mexican architecture. In 2013 O'Gorman's own first house, which he began designing in 1929 and completed in 1931, was restored. Uncompromisingly radical and rigorously functional, this design reveals O'Gorman as a Mexican pioneer of avant-garde architecture. Casa O'Gorman 1929 tells the story of this unique building.

Résumé:
Today, spaces no longer represent a bourgeois haven; nor are they the sites of a classical harmony between work and leisure, private and public, the local and the global. The house is not merely a home but a position for negotiations with multiple spheres — the technological as well as the physical and the psychological. In A Topology of Everyday Constellations, Georges Teyssot considers the intrusion of the public sphere into private space, and the blurring of notions of interior, privacy, and intimacy in our societies. He proposes that we rethink design in terms of a new definition of the practices of everyday life. Teyssot considers the door, the window, the mirror, and the screen as thresholds or interstitial spaces that divide the world in two: the outside and the inside. Thresholds, he suggests, work both as markers of boundaries and as bridges to the exterior. The stark choice between boundary and bridge creates a middle space, an in-between that holds the possibility of exchanges and encounters. If the threshold no longer separates public from private, and if we can no longer think of the house as a bastion of privacy, Teyssot asks, does the body still inhabit the house — or does the house, evolving into a series of microdevices, inhabit the body?

Résumé:
In 1946 Ove Arup, a leading engineer of the twentieth century, founded a firm of consulting engineers that brought to fruition such iconic structures as the Sydney Opera House, the Olympic Village in Beijing, London’s Millennium Bridge, the Beaubourg Centre in Paris, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, and Kansai Airport in Japan among many others. Devoted to a “commonsense” reform of engineering and architectural practice, Arup (1895-1988) pioneered the way for modern architects and engineers to collaborate successfully and responsibly on large projects. Peter Jones, the first researcher to have full access to the vast private Arup archives, tells the story of Ove Arup’s extraordinary life, his social, aesthetic, and environmental concerns, and his practical contributions during a period of political and technological upheaval. Jones also offers a revelatory new account of the Sydney Opera House and the character of those involved in its complex construction.

Architect of the Broadway Chambers Building, the US Custom House, the Minnesota State Capitol, the St. Louis Art Museum, and large-scale projects like the city plan for New Haven, Connecticut, Gilbert is most famous for his skyscrapers - "symbols of our national genius and unrestraint" - monuments of the Beaux Arts "City Beautiful" aesthetic he embraced throughout his career. Containing essays by major Gilbert scholars, Inventing the Skyline documents fascinating details about the buildings: the color scheme of the main entrance of the Minnesota State Capitol, made to resemble the Byzantine tomb of Galla Placidia in Ravenna; the controversy that erupted over the use of female nudes on the relief of the Essex County Courthouse; and the ill-fated plans for the George Washington Bridge as a Beaux Arts monument with elaborate plazas, fountains, and sculptures.

Once there was life without books. It’s hard to imagine what that must have been like: an age of stories and knowledge of the world which stretched no farther than a day’s walk. The introduction of the written source constituted nothing less than the creation of a time and space capsule. The story, the idea, insight, knowledge were suddenly free of their messenger and were all able to bridge distances, able to surface, vanish and reappear. Just as there was a time before the book, there will also be a time after it. In this issue ‘The Last Book’ project is taken up, but as to the consequences of publishing exclusively online – the loss of filters such as the publisher, editor and publication costs – we can only guess. Yet it is clear that our centuries old house of knowledge is undergoing a fundamental renovation, beginning with the solid base of the library.

Résumé:
Claus Bury began his career as a jeweler, and the architectural sculpture he's been making since 1979 retains the rounded shapes, balance and smooth finish of his first trade. High Tide, Low Tide tracks Bury's most recent accomplishments, and, for the first time, includes excerpts from his sketchbooks and journals. Pages detailing his recent travels in Yucatan, Mexico appear alongside black-and-white photographs of Mayan temples. Photographs of Bury's farm works, made of bales of hay, show the influence of the Mayans' iconic geometric purity. Other materials illuminate the artist's latest curved and boned structures, many wooden, by comparing them to ships. And the production of his largest work to date, the 2006 "Bitterfeld Arch," a multi-story steel bridge to nowhere, is documented from the ground up--eight months from start to ribbon-cutting--and contrasted with the "Greenhouse for Thoughts," a 2005 wooden installation shaped like a house frame, with a forest of studs where the walls would be. Though Bury was trained in Germany and is based there, he has taught at RISD, won an NEA grant, and seen his work shown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
