Improvised music consists of diverse properties that fail to register in the object-oriented understanding of composition. As a result, it is often dismissed as noise — an interfering signal. However, Brown asserts, such interference can bear meaning and stimulate change. "Noise orders" identifies how architecture can respond to the inclusive dynamics of extemporaneous movements, variable conceptions of composition, multiple durations, and wide manipulation of resources found in jazz to enable outcomes that far exceed a design’s seeming potential. By exploring overlapping moments between modernism and the cultural dimensions of jazz, "Noise orders" suggests that the discipline of improvisation continues to open and redefine architectural theory and practice, creating a world where designers contribute to emerging environments rather than make predetermined ones. Comparing modern and avant-garde artists and architects with individuals and groups in jazz—including Piet Mondrian and boogie-woogie, John Cage and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Le Corbusier and Louis Armstrong, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM)—Brown examines how jazz can offer alternative design ideas and directions, be incorporated in contemporary architectural practices, and provide insight on how to develop dynamic metropolitan environments. It marked the first action by a group of revolutionary architects, builders, and students forming the Kollektiv für sozialistisches Bauen under the architect Arthur Korn. Taking aim at modernist architects participating in the German Building Exhibition and CIAM, they cast architecture as an instrument of power, questioned capitalist solutions to the housing question, and unveiled planning approaches imported from the then-Soviet Union. A full facsimile of the exhibition manifesto/catalog and exhibition panels is featured in addition to contributing essays by contemporary architects, writers and educators, and the Collectives’ Annual Report including a proposed work program and statement of intent. Over the past fifteen years Beijing has experienced unprecedented change–a change more dramatic and profound than ever before. Contemporary skyscrapers and architectural forms are gradually enclosing the historic city centre. Steel and glass structures, constructions reminiscent of distant metropolises, highways, viaducts, and sports facilities have given Beijing a new face. Speed, combined with ever-changing rules and regulations, are the main characteristics of contemporary Beijing’s transformation. Understanding this process means arranging intermediate and transitional phases into a logical sequence, in a historical and urban context of reference. The speed at which the city is changing means that the work site phase and the actual moment of transformation have become an integral part of project elaboration, thereby influencing and modifying its development. This state of sudden and seemingly chaotic evolution is nonetheless supported by an urban structure dating back thousands of years and by a well-defined past. It is essential to understand this in order to identify the continuity in the midst of change, which in itself seems to be the real essence of the city’s evolution.

Kunlé Adeyemi’s Summer House is an inverse replica of Queen Caroline’s Temple—a tribute to its robust form, space and material, recomposed into a new sculptural object. Barkow Leibinger were inspired by another, now extinct, 18th-century pavilion also designed by William Kent, which rotated and offered 360-degree views of the Park. Yona Friedman’s Summer House takes the form of a modular structure that can be assembled and disassembled. Asif Khan’s design is inspired by the fact that Queen Caroline’s Temple was positioned in a way that would allow it to catch the sunlight from the Serpentine lake.

Andrea Palladio is known equally for his built work as he is for his written work, the influence of which is clearly felt on the course of architecture in America. Despite the fact that he was born less than two decades after the discovery of America and would, quite clearly, never build in Los Angeles, this publication offers suggestions of what might have been had Palladio made it to the Pacific. The inaugural issue of PAX, "Andrea Palladio in Los Angeles," will deal with these two historically distant but thematically intimate topics in search of a richer and more productive reading of both.
