Perspecta 31 examines the relationship between architectural design and structural engineering through the processes and products of both disciplines. The contributing architects, engineers, and historians explore how structures reflect both the professions and the cultures that produce them. The authors' common approach to structure, which carefully considers context, reveals the politics, economic influences, design ideas, and chance circumstances that influence its configuration. The resulting series of articles and case studies shows how one can understand structures that are embedded in architecture. The journal looks specifically at issues of collaboration between architects and engineers. It also addresses the relationship of structural form to materials, the transition from conceptual to actual structures, and the cultural history of architectural and industrial structures. Reflecting the theme of structure as process, the journal documents an ongoing conversation between the editors, contributors, and others. The twelve articles are followed by short responses, and major themes emerging from the articles are identified and explored by the editors. The journal concludes with the results of an informal survey of architects on the role of structure in the design process. Contributors include Thomas H. Beeby, Eric DeLony, Gregory K. Jiménez began to build the moment he finished school; his buildings have gathered their meaning in use and simple presence. "Buildings bleed," says Jiménez; their meaning is evolutionary and they acquire content in every context they partake in. The introduction by Michael Bell titled "Houston, Texas and the Architecture of Carlos Jiménez", analyzes how the architect's practice has made use of given conditions, sites and intellectual histories, showing that the multi-faceted depth of Jiménez's practice is in large part due to his diligent and empathetic care for the milieu that he works within. This publication presents fourteen recent works and projects with abundant graphic and photographic documentation. The introduction by Luis Fernández-Galiano weaves biographical insights with Jiménez's lyrical and personal architectural language, emphasizing the importance of memory in his work. ''Ad Astra'' is an artist book created as part of a public art project commissioned for the medical library of the University of Montreal Health Center (CHUM), in Montréal, Quebec. Involving the arts, science, and public participation, ''Ad Astra'' consists of an archive of messages that are poetically sent to the stars and to the future. The messages, collected from the hospital community, are transformed by means of a collaboration between art and neuroscience to generate astral images, and ultimately, a collective artwork representing a collection of prayers, hopes and fears. Rooted in deep human experiences,''Ad Astra'' gives voice to the range of emotions and the cycle of life and death that the hospital context is witness to daily. In compliment to the permanent multimedia artwork installed in the library, the book presents a tightly knit set of relationships among the various elements that compose the project, including messages, portraits, neurological diagrams, video-stills, citations, and texts. An introductory essay by Claire Moeder creatively illuminates the core interests of the project while the graphic design by Criterium echoes the installation with material means. The book is a nomadic archive and tactile object that was created to travel beyond the primary site of medical library, and ultimately towards the stars.

Otto Neurath’s famous "Modern man in the making," first published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1939, captures and describes the state of the world in the 1930s by using text and figurative illustrations. From 1925 on, Neurath and his team had worked on a new visual language termed "Isotype" (International System of Typographic Picture Education). At a time that saw new mass media making hitherto unthinkable amounts of information available, Neurath felt the need for a systematic visualization explaining facts, statistical data and comparative numbers in simple ways. The book can be seen as one of the most influential predecessors of today’s infographics. In the visuals, each symbol and color represents a certain group of objects or people, often compared repetitively over a certain time span. The topics covered in the book include diverse social issues of the time like mortality, health, employment, trade, education, mobility, migration and demographics. Focusing on the period from the 1920s through the 1950s, Akcan traces the geographical circulation of modern residential models, including the garden city—which emphasized green spaces separating low-density neighborhoods of houses surrounded by gardens—and mass housing built first for the working-class residents in industrial cities and, later, more broadly for mixed-income residents. She shows how the concept of translation—the process of change that occurs with transportation of people, ideas, technology, information, and images from one or more countries to another—allows for consideration of the sociopolitical context and agency of all parties in cultural exchanges. Moving beyond the indistinct concepts of hybrid and transculturation and avoiding passive metaphors such as import, influence, or transfer, translation offers a new approach relevant to many disciplines. She shows how the concept of translation—the process of change that occurs with transportation of people, ideas, technology, information, and images from one or more countries to another—allows for consideration of the sociopolitical context and agency of all parties in cultural exchanges. Moving beyond the indistinct concepts of hybrid and transculturation and avoiding passive metaphors such as import, influence, or transfer, translation offers a new approach relevant to many disciplines. Akcan advocates a commitment to a new culture of translatability from below for a truly cosmopolitan ethics in a globalizing world.

Framing the recent "educational turn" in the arts within a broad historical and social context, this anthology raises fundamental questions about how and what should be taught in an era of distributive rather than media-based practices. Among the many sources and arguments traced here is second-wave feminism, which questioned dominant notions of personal and institutional freedom as enacted through art teaching and practice. Similarly, education-based responses by the art community to the catastrophes of World War II and postcolonial conflict critically inform contemporary art confronting the interrelationships of education, power, market capitalism, and--as Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri describe it--the global condition of war. These writings by artists, philosophers, educators, poets, and activists center on three recurring and interrelated themes: the notion of "indiscipline" in theories and practices that challenge boundaries of all kinds; the present and future role of the art school; and the turn to pedagogy as medium in a diverse range of recent projects. Other writings address such issues as instrumentalism and control, liberation and equality, the production and the politics of culture, and the roots of research-based practice and experimental participatory works.

Ever since the landmark publication of Susan Sontag’s On Photography, it has been impossible to look at photographs, particularly those of violence and suffering, without questioning our role as photographic voyeur. Are we desensitized by the proliferation of these images, and does this make it easier to be passive and uninvolved? To answer these questions, Picturing Atrocity brings together writers and critics on photography today to offer close readings of images that reveal the realities behind the photographs, the subjects, and the photographers. From the massacre of the Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee to the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib, from famine in China to apartheid in South Africa, Picturing Atrocity examines a broad spectrum of photographs.
