Résumé:
Africa’s population and economic growth make it the world’s fastest urbanizing continent. While some might still associate Africa with rural development, the future of Africa is, in fact, very urban. This urbanization is a huge challenge in areas with fragile institutional frameworks and chronic poverty. Many migrants moving to the city end up in self-organized settlements without basic services. ''Urban Africa'' brings together authors from various academic, political, and design backgrounds: as well as case studies on new towns in Ghana, Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Morocco, Kenya etc. In this way, the book provides a critical narrative about contemporary ''Urban Africa'' and the western world’s role – if any – in the radical transformations happening today.

Résumé:
Due to the economic importance of its major employer, the city of Koromo changed its name to Toyota in 1959. The Homi public housing development in Toyota City opened in 1975 and was then a highly desirable residence for many families. Today it is home to a large population of Brazilian immigrants, who came to the area to work at Toyota and related manufacturing jobs, but are now often the first to lose those jobs due to recession. Architecture and the ways that people live continue to be Van der Weijde’s main themes. The absence of people in these photographs cover them with a spooky layer, even more when one knows that over 11,000 people live in this estate.

Photographer and master printer Brian Young first arrived in New York City in 1984. He witnessed all the well-known ills of ‘70s and early ‘80s New York, finding the city slowly, haltingly recovering from an economic depression. Industry and manufacturing jobs had left the city, and the population continued to drain out to the suburbs. The “crack epidemic” was on the front pages and on the streets. Abandoned shells of burnt-out cars littered the roads and muggings were simply a fact of daily life. Young found his camera increasingly drawn to the subway system--one of the great social levelers of life in New York City and, increasingly, the canvas for an explosive profusion of graffiti.

First publication, glossary of preservation terms, bibliography, index After completing an extensive survey of preservation programs throughout the United States, authors Virginia O. Benson and Richard Klein saw the need for this comprehensive approach to historic preservation, examining where it has been and where it is going, anticipating that historic preservation must encourage collaborative projects among planning, design, and development professionals. This book focuses on complex economic, political, and social realities facing the profession today. It provides an in-depth historic analysis of the profession, a summary of legal issues, an architectural synopsis, a discussion of career opportunities in the public and private sectors, and examples of innovative nonprofit leadership and preservation trends.

Jakarta Megalopolis focuses on two projects in the title city by artist and architect Stani Michiels and artist Arjan van Helmond. Each grapples with Jakarta's housing culture, the experience of private as opposed to public space and the consequences of city migration, as well as the city's infrastructure, increasing density, and its coherence--or lack thereof--as a whole. As megalopolises in developing countries undergo explosive growth, their cultural, social, political and economic complexities are developing at unprecedented rates. That phenomenon is drawing more and more attention within the world of architecture and art, and Jakarta Megalopolis offers a case study of its complexities, a cutaway view of this chaotic new world.

Never before have so many high-rises been built. Spectacular skyscrapers with landmark character are not only appearing in boom cities like Dubai and Beijing or in the USA — the high-rise is also experiencing a renaissance in Europe. No type of building generates stronger emotions, but differentiated debate on these tower blocks only began recently. It is no longer merely a question of how many meters tall, but of new qualities in the construction of high-rise buildings, e.g. energy efficiency, sustainability, and social, economic and ecological compatibility. The projects of the International Highrise Award 2008 demonstrate current developments and so present the full range of contemporary high-rise construction, from utilisation to site-specifics.

Résumé:
Few issues today attract as much public attention as housing. Beyond the political and economic debate, the solution also lies in architecture, understood as a discipline capable of generating innovative, sustainable, and socially responsible solutions. In this context, architectural design becomes an essential tool for building a more livable, efficient, and equitable residential model. In this double issue, 'AV Monographs' brings together some 20 collective housing projects that offer a representative overview of contemporary Spanish residential architecture. Selected for their ability to address a common challenge through diverse approaches, the projects span a broad spectrum of programs and management models, ranging from public development and private initiatives to rental housing, coliving, and housing cooperatives.

Résumé:
The geographic, social, and economic diversity of Mexico constitute a prime example of the challenges inherent to meeting individual needs in an increasingly crowded world. The drawings and essays comprise new ways of looking at theories and buildings in order to redefine the connection between housing and the city. This research is centered in drawings of 70 housing projects, creating a common language highlighting different attempts at reinventing the house not as an isolated battle but as part of a strategy for reimagining how we want to live. This book showcases the pivotal voices that have shaped major cities through housing projects and explores how policies and ideas transform into built form, and how in turn buildings shape societies.

Résumé:
This book serves as a critical review of Social Urbanism, defined as a socio-political and practical approach to urban globalisation, deriving from a planning strategy and portfolio of built projects that seek to alleviate the social consequences of urbanisation. It emphasises both the political processes and the urbanism projects that simultaneously consider socio-economic and ecological components of space, and which highlight a greater focus on social sustainability. In a context in which geography defines space and culture, and through challenges of a global magnitude, we are inextricably united in an era of environmental uncertainty, where shared experiences and values place us within a collective culture, inspiring mutual agency in service of this vision for Social Urbanism.

Résumé:
With the two volumes of Las grandes esperanzas (1976-1992), published in Spanish, Luis Fernández-Galiano looks back on a troubled and fertile era that in Spain began with the Transition to democracy and in the world saw the rise of conservative politics with Reagan and Thatcher at the helm, to last until the historic rupture that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall and the break-up of the USSR. The first tome, Empeños sostenibles (1976-1984), dissects a period marked by the economic recession and ecological awakening brought on by the petroleum shocks that rocked the planet, matters addressed by two dozen texts on technological alternatives, sustainable construction, and the relationship between architecture and energy.
