Complexes et hybrides: nous pouvons caractériser par ces deux termes une grande partie des logements collectifs conçus dans le cadre de concours organisés en Suisse entre 2005 et 2015. Ceci a certainement à voir avec le discours actuel sur la densité et le «construire la ville en ville», une orientation qui implique de la part des architectes un travail fin avec des formes hybrides, issues souvent de la prise en compte de situations contradictoires et de valeurs contraires, telles que construire et préserver la nature. Soulignons, par ailleurs, l’intérêt des architectes contemporains pour des solutions complexes, contenant plusieurs niveaux de signification ; attitude dont on fait l’hypothèse qu’elle s’ancre dans les postulats critiques des années 1960 et 1970, en référence notamment aux «stratégies de coexistence» de l’historien Colin Rowe et au phénomène du «à la fois» théorisé par l’architecte Robert Venturi. Abondamment illustré, cet ouvrage présente l’analyse de près d’une quarantaine de projets de concours de logements collectifs en Suisse de 2005 à 2015, faisant notamment ressortir un véritable revival des immeubles à cour et des formes non dictées par les règles de la composition, d’inspiration souvent organique. Les projets ici analysés témoignent aussi du fait qu’il persiste une réflexion sur les modes de vie et la qualité des espaces domestiques – menée souvent de concert avec les coopératives de logement qui demeurent les maîtres d’ouvrage majoritaires – avec l’émergence de certains dispositifs inédits comme le «lieu à manger», qui devient de nos jours une véritable centralité dans le logement.

His major works include the Houston Museum of Fine Art, Davis Art Museum at Wellesley College, the Stockholm Museum of Modern Art and Architecture, and the Potzdammer Platz Hotel in Berlin. Now Moneo will be known as a daring critic as well. In this book he looks at eight of his contemporaries -- all architects of international stature -- and discusses the theoretical positions, technical innovations, and design contributions of each. Moneo's discussion of these eight architects -- James Stirling, Robert Venturi, Aldo Rossi, Peter Eisenman, Alvaro Siza, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, and the partnership of Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron -- has the colloquial, engaging tone of a series of lectures on modern architecture by a master architect; the reader hears not the dispassionate theorizing of an academic, but Moneo's own deeply held convictions as he considers the work of his contemporaries. Discussing each of the eight architects in turn, Moneo first gives an introductory profile, emphasizing intentions, theoretical concerns, and construction procedures. This second volume of "The details of modern architecture" continues the study of the relationships of the ideals of design and the realities of construction in modern architecture, beginning in the late 1920s and extending to the present day. It contains a wealth of new information on the construction of modern architecture at a variety of scales from minute details to general principles. There are over 500 illustrations, including 130 original photographs and 230 original axonometric drawings, arranged to explain the technical, aesthetic, and historical aspects of the building form. Most of the modern movements in architecture have identified some paradigm of good construction, arguing that buildings should be built like Gothic cathedrals, like airplanes, like automobiles, like ships, or like primitive dwellings. Ford examines the degree to which these models were followed, either in spirit or in form, and reveals much about both the theories and techniques of modern architecture, including the extent to which the current constructional theories of high tech and deconstruction are dependent on the traditional modernist paradigms, as well as the ways in which all of these theories differ from the realities of modern building. Individual chapters treat the work of Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Eric Gunnar Asplund, Richard Neutra, Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, and Louis Kahn, as well as the Case Study, high tech, postmodern, and deconstructivist architects. Among the individual buildings documented are Eliel Saarinen's Cranbrook School, Asplund's Woodland Cemetery, Fuller's Dymaxion house, the Venturi house, the Eames and other Case Study houses, the concrete buildings of Le Corbusier, Aalto's Säynätsalo Town Hall, and Kahn's Exeter Library and Salk Institute.
