Ce dictionnaire est une forme composite qui re´sulte d’une activite´ a` re´sonances multiples dans l’histoire des relations entre art et information, dans l’histoire de la critique architec- turale et dans celle de l’architecture critique. Les e´ve´nements fortuits que transmettent ces images collige´es par Charney nous forcent a` voir l’architecture dans un cadre qui n’est plus celui de sa repre´sentation comme construction monumentale isole´e. Cette publication accompagnait la participation canadienne a` la 7e Exposition internationale d’architecture de la Biennale de Venise, dont le the`me e´tait « La ville : moins d’esthe´tique, plus d’e´thique ». The Montre´al-based Canadian artist and architect Melvin Charney describes the history of modern architecture as a series of significant monuments that have been reproduced and documented. Here, the unexpected events transmitted by wire-service news photographs—selected, classified into various thematic areas, and collated by Charney—confront us with the shock or recognition that allows us to see architecture from outside its presentation as an isolated monument. The choices made by Charney from the ideas enclosed in the pre-packaged “news” images order them into a “dictionary,” and show the built and inhabited world as it appears through journalistic information. This publication accompanied the Canadian entry to the Venice Biennale’s 7th International Architecture Exhibition, whose theme was “The City: Less Aesthetics, More Ethics.”

Ce livre présente trois projets autour de l’idée d’un voyage d’aventure commencé il y a 30 ans et interroge, au travers de différentes odyssées dans l’espace, l’idée d’un futur fondé sur la technologie. Depuis le voyage sur la lune en 1969, Alessandro Poli et Superstudio considèrent qu’il n’est plus possible d’imaginer notre environnement coupé de cet espace extérieur, devenu une nouvelle réalité. Leurs recherches approfondies ont abouti à un projet désormais légendaire : «Architettura interplanetaria», une autoroute reliant la terre à la lune. Michael Maltzan, architecte basé à Los Angeles, travaille quant à lui sur la conception d’un Voyage vers la lune nouveau laboratoire pour la NASA (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), qui remet en question les modèles actuels de bâtiments abritant la recherche scientifique; il propose un nouveau type d’environnement physique pour faciliter la collaboration dans les processus de recherche. Enfin, Greg Lynn, architecte lui aussi de Los Angeles, a initié, en collaboration avec des étudiants de l’université de Vienne et l’UCLA, un projet de recherche et de design pour de nouveaux terminaux sur la terre et sur la lune, destinés aux voyageurs entre ces deux destinations.

This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.

Conceived as part of the one-year investigation Catching Up with Life, A Section of Now aims to re-establish a dialogue between architecture and society that would allow for architecture to begin to contend with and address our changed and changing social norms. The publication serves as a meditation on new behaviours, rituals, and values and their spatial implications and seeks to catalyze urban and architectural interventions that accommodate, influence, and, in some cases, pre-empt our new lived realities.
