L’archéologie du numérique creuse en profondeur un aspect des plus essentiels : la genèse et la mise en oeuvre, à la fin des années 1980, d’outils numériques servant à la conceptualisation, la visualisation et la fabrication dans le domaine du design. Quels ont été les défis soulevés par ces technologies novatrices et les nouveaux champs de recherche qu’elles ont ouverts aux concepteurs ? Comment s’est faite la transition entre pratiques analogiques et outils numériques, et comment le dialogue entre eux a-t-il été exploité ? Ces questions sont au coeur de la présente publication et de l’exposition qu’elle accompagne, qui se déploient autour de quatre projets choisis comme étant des moments charnières des premières étapes du développement de l’architecture numérique : la résidence Lewis (1989–1995), de Frank Gehry, le Biozentrum de Francfort (1987), de Peter Eisenman, la conception de la toiture du complexe sportif municipal d’Odawara et celle du gymnase Galaxy de Toyama (1990 –1992), de Shoei Yoh, ainsi que la sphère déployable (1991) et le dôme Iris (1994) de Chuck Hoberman. Chacun des projets a imprimé une orientation certaine à la recherche architecturale en permettant d’expérimenter les possibilités qu’offraient les nouveaux outils numériques. Le dialogue entre informatique, architecture et génie est au coeur de ces expériences, qui peuvent être considérées comme les précurseurs de méthodes encore opérationnelles aujourd’hui.

Between the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and the implementation of Reform and Opening Up policies in 1979, architecture played a key role in shaping China’s vision for socialist modernity. However, driven by shifting policies throughout these three decades, modern Chinese architecture has largely been perceived as stunted. Many misconceptions of this history persist: that nationalization and collectivism denied architects creative independence, that projects focused on industrial productivity over design quality, and that the promotion of a “national style” limited more modern formal choices. At once a question and a proposition, How Modern: Biographies of Architecture in China 1949–1979 reassesses New China’s architectural production. Reproducing primary sources alongside short essays and interviews with architects, archivists, historians, and residents, the book reflects on issues such as agency, innovation, collaboration, expertise, standardization, craft, and local and international impact. It challenges a monolithic history of socialist modernity by foregrounding the varied conditions under which modernism was conceived, realized, and experienced.

Aglaia Konrad’s work often takes the form of a book, each conceived as an edited archive of the ways in which she uses photography to investigate urban landscapes. Two of her book projects were part of "The lives of documents—Photography as project", the project curated by Stefano Graziani and Bas Princen, and it was while putting this exhibition together that Konrad shared her enthusiasm after researching the work of five women that conceived several residential neighbourhoods in Warsaw after the Second World War and redefined the city as a green haven. If the two book projects she presented in our exhibition—Atlas (2000) and Copy Cities (2003–2004)—brought together multiple fragments of her extensive and systematic documentary work on cities, her survey of the work of Alina Scholtz, Barbara Brukalska, Halina Skibniewska, Helena Syrkus, and Zofia Hansen leads now to a travel diary that reflects on the role of architecture and landscape architecture in defining places of bonding and belonging.

By collaborating with policymakers, local contractors, and NGOs, and by engaging their respective labs at ETH Zu¨rich and the University of Hong Kong as key research locations, both offices investigate new forms of cooperation and dialogue as crucial strategies for design. 51N4E and RUF work at the seams of urbanization, with projects situated in transitional settlements in Ulaanbaatar, the rural regions of China, the transforming neighborhoods of Brussels, and Albania’s shifting public spaces. This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.

Conceived as part of the one-year investigation Catching Up with Life, A Section of Now aims to re-establish a dialogue between architecture and society that would allow for architecture to begin to contend with and address our changed and changing social norms. The publication serves as a meditation on new behaviours, rituals, and values and their spatial implications and seeks to catalyze urban and architectural interventions that accommodate, influence, and, in some cases, pre-empt our new lived realities. Authors address topics ranging from the safety of digital spaces to how normative life trajectories affect the elderly and the many selves each of us puts forward, while architects present frameworks for spaces for blended families, thirty-year-old retirees, and contested monuments, among many others. Conceived as part of the one-year investigation Catching Up with Life, A Section of Now aims to re-establish a dialogue between architecture and society that would allow for architecture to begin to contend with and address our changed and changing social norms. The publication serves as a meditation on new behaviours, rituals, and values and their spatial implications and seeks to catalyze urban and architectural interventions that accommodate, influence, and, in some cases, pre-empt our new lived realities. Authors address topics ranging from the safety of digital spaces to how normative life trajectories affect the elderly and the many selves each of us puts forward, while architects present frameworks for spaces for blended families, thirty-year-old retirees, and contested monuments, among many others.
