Résumé:
This book is a sub-urbanist manifesto. Its author, Sébastien Marot, challenges the dominant role of the programme in regulating the design project, and argues that instead attention should be redirected towards the site – the site read in depth, with an active regard for memory. Exploring this analysis, he considers in turn Frances Yates’ book ''The Art of Memory'', Sigmund Freud’s analogy between the past of a city and the workings of memory, Robert Smithson’s account of a tour of his suburban birthplace and Georges Descombes’ design for a small park in the Geneva suburb where he spent his childhood. Marot’s conclusion brings these different strands together and highlights, in memory, a precept that is essential to the renewal of current architecture. This AA Documents publication is a re-edition of Sébastien Marot’s Sub-Urbanism and the Art of Memory, originally edited by Pamela Johnston and published by AA Publications in 2003. It is based on a 1999 text by Marot, translated from the French by Brian Holmes.

Résumé:
Larry Bennett calls contemporary Chicago the third city to distinguish it from its two predecessors: the first city, a sprawling industrial center whose historical arc ran from the Civil War to the Great Depression; and the second city, the Rustbelt exemplar of the period from around 1950 to 1990. The third city features a dramatically revitalized urban core, a shifting population mix that includes new immigrant streams, and a growing number of middle-class professionals working in new economy sectors. It is also a city utterly transformed by the top-to-bottom reconstruction of public housing developments and the ambitious provision of public works like Millennium Park. It is, according to Bennett, a work in progress spearheaded by Richard M. Daley, a self-consciously innovative mayor whose strategy of neighborhood revitalization and urban renewal is a prototype of city governance for the twenty-first century. The Third City ultimately contends that to understand Chicago under Daley’s charge is to understand what metropolitan life across North America may well look like in the coming decades.

Résumé:
Ecological Urbanism: The Nature of the City asks the questions that are important inside and outside the built environment professions: what are climate change, urbanisation and ecology doing to the theory and practice of urban design? How does Ecological Urbanism figure in this change? What is Ecological Urbanism? In answer, this book is neither definitive – impossible when a subject is still in motion – nor encyclopaedic – equally impossible when so much has been written on almost every aspect of these essays. Instead, it seeks to rebalance the ecological narrative and its embryonic modes of practice with the narratives of urbanism and its older, deeply embedded modes of practice. It examines the implications for cities and the designers of cities now we are required to again address their metabolic as well as social and formal dimensions, and it explores the extent to which environmental engineering and natural systems design can and should become drivers for the remaking of cities in the 21st century. Above all, it argues that sooner rather than later, urbanism needs to become environmentally literate, and environmental design needs to become culturally literate.

Résumé:
"UN Studio" is the innovative firm founded by Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, two Dutch designers creating some of the most ambitious and celebrated architecture of their generation. Fluidity and flexibility are hallmarks of UN Studio projects, and many of these projects have literally reinvented a number of standard building types, such as power stations, museums, bridges, transportation hubs, and live-work residences (including one based on a Möbius strip). UN Studio projects fuse a sophisticated understanding of digital design with a formal and material exploration that has ensured that their work reaches far beyond the "supermodernism" associated with other Dutch firms. This book presents the firm's complete body of work, including several major projects in Germany (Mercedes-Benz Museum, Stuttgart), Italy (Pierodi Pier, Genoa harbor), Switzerland (Hotel Castell, Zuoz), Korea (Galleris Hallin, Seoul) and many in the Netherlands.
