Aldo Rossi, a practicing architect and leader of the Italian architectural movement La Tendenza, is also one of the most influential theorists writing today. The Architecture of the City is his major work of architectural and urban theory. In part a protest against functionalism and the Modern Movement, in part an attempt to restore the craft of architecture to its position as the only valid object of architectural study, and in part an analysis of the rules and forms of the city's construction, the book has become immensely popular among architects and design students.

Résumé:
Shrinking cities have pushed urban design and classical city planning to their limits. This new challenge requires new approaches in which the "hard" tools of construction are joined by the "soft" tools of political, social, cultural, and communicative interventions. This book provides an international overview of experimental concepts for taking action in shrinking cities from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban construction, the media, performance, and art. The approaches range from artistic intercessions and self-empowerment projects to architectural and landscape interventions, and from strategies of media communication and city marketing to new legal regulations and utopian designs. A series of essays provides a critical discussion of both successful and failed projects of recent decades from such countries as the United States, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria, Russia, and Japan. Projects featured (selection): William Alsop, Crimson, Jeremy Deller, Gordon Matta-Clark, OMA, Cedric Price, Andreas Siekmann, Robert Smithson, Superflex, O. M. Ungers

Résumé:
The suburban Dutch neighborhood of Hoogyliet, just outside Rotterdam, was designed after World War II along Modernist lines. Over the ensuing years, the district became more and more rundown and economically depressed. Then the WiMBY! project came along--its mission to raise the standard of this increasingly blighted neighborhood by developing a range of experimental buildings for the town's regeneration, as well as smaller-scale architectural, urban-planning, visual-art and sociocultural projects. This densely adorable paperback tells the whole story, focusing on the positive achievements and lessons drawn, with copious illustrations of all the resulting buildings and designs. It's a must-have for any design professionals interested in real, working urban renewal but also an uplifting manual for a more general audience: the book reads like a fairytale, tracing the many ups and downs of the WiMBY! project in frank detail in a format that is as informative as it is lively and humorous.

Résumé:
Everyday Urbanism is one of three books in the "Michigan Debates on Urbanism" series that also features New Urbanism and Post Urbanism. Each book represents a distinct, inevitable, but still-emerging paradigm in contemporary urbanism, and is an elaboration on public debates held at the University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning during the winter of 2004. In this volume Margaret Crawford, co-author of "Everyday Urbanism" and Professor of Architecture at Harvard University, is the protagonist. She presents the case for an informal, bottom-up urbanism that celebrates and builds on everyday, ordinary life and reality, with little pretense about the possibility of a tidy or ideal built environment. Michael Speaks, Graduate Program Director at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and a widely published author, is the respondent. Rahul Mehrotra, Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Michigan and award-winning Bombay designer, introduces and moderates the exchange.

Résumé:
"Groundswell : constructing the contemporary landscape" presents 23 projects that reveal the surge of creativity and discussion surrounding the designed landscape in a broad, principally urban, international context. In the last 20 years, many significant new public spaces have been created for sites that have been reclaimed from conflict, environmental degradation, and abandonment. The projects, found throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, were selected for their design, and for their variety of contexts, materials, scale, and types of spaces. This fully illustrated volume includes an essay by Peter Reed, Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, that demonstrates how these innovative projects expand the definition of the modernist landscape while responding to a variety of conditions such as program, social function, and the transformation and reclamation previously industrial areas. The essay is followed by a full-color plate section featuring the selected projects. Catalogue entries for each project provide a succinct description of the site, its transformation, and design concepts illustrated by photographs, drawings, and models.

Résumé:
Standards and codes dictate virtually all aspects of urban development. The same standards for subdividing land, grading, laying streets and utilities, and configuring rights-of-way and street widths to accommodate cars (rather than pedestrians) have been adopted in many areas of the world regardless of variations in local environments. In "The code of the city", Eran Ben-Joseph examines the relationship between standards and place making. He traces the evolution of codes and standards and analyzes their impact on the modern city and its suburbs, arguing that it is time for development regulations to reflect site-specific and localized physical design.
