Résumé:
Today, we live in an economic system that revolves around producing and consuming objects made of plastic and metal, electronics, synthetic textiles and other things that do not decompose within a foreseeable amount of time. We start to review the role of these objects in a series of challenges that lie ahead of us. In the design discipline, sustainability and social responsibility have become prolific epithets, generating new products, materials, and technologies, designed to change the course of our future. The intrinsic design ideologies are often not new, but form a fundamental part of design history, reappearing throughout the previous centuries. This book presents a history of socially committed design strategies within the western design tradition, from William Morris to Victor Papanek, and from VKhUTEMAS to FabLab. A critical resource for designers, students, cultural critics, and anyone interested in building a sustainable future.

Résumé:
The eighteen members of the London-based architecture collective Assemble began collaborating in 2010, following their graduation from Cambridge University. In the years since, they have built projects across a wide range of style and function, including a temporary cinema at a former gas station, affordable workspaces for artists, the foundation of social enterprises, the revitalization of a former working-class neighborhood, and designing a new art gallery for Goldsmiths, University of London. To all of their projects they bring an awareness of the social, economic, and political conditions of a society, with the aim of changing the status quo through enabling community action. This volume offers a look at the work of the collective, presenting a closer look at ten selected projects, along with essays that present background information and reflections on Assemble’s objectives and philosophy.

Résumé:
A city’s infrastructure—its tangle of streets, tunnels, routes and lines—can be much more than a mere functional necessity or an ad hoc constellation. Designed and constructed carefully and purposefully, "infratecture" can add significant sociological, cultural, ecological and economic value to a city. In this volume, Rotterdam-based traffic engineer, academic and architect Marc Verheijen discusses the infrastructure of cities from 15 different perspectives and features 30 examples of international best practices in infrastructure design. A practically oriented book about designing and building everything from roads and viaducts to environmental habitats and noise barriers, Infratecture is also an argument for these integrated design solutions, all the more urgent at a moment of accelerated global urbanization. Infratecture argues that, with the right mind set, genuine cooperation and sophisticated design, infrastructure can form a significant, and positive, part of the everyday environment.

This beautifully illustrated book offers a comprehensive look at the career of photographer William Notman (1826–1891). Born in Scotland, Notman emigrated to Canada in 1856; he settled in Montreal and opened a photography studio that later had branches throughout Canada and the United States. Notman documented the development of a continent, photographing street scenes in burgeoning cities and modern transportation by steam and rail, and creating portraits of such notable figures as Mark Twain, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Sitting Bull, and Buffalo Bill. By fully exploiting the commercial and aesthetic potential of the rapidly advancing photographic technology, Notman contributed to the establishment of the socio-economic prominence of Montreal and played a key role in the formation of a Canadian national identity. Published and unpublished photographs are paired with texts that explore the photographer’s numerous achievements.

Résumé:
In this anthropological history, Mary E. Hancock examines the politics of public memory in the southern Indian city of Chennai. Once a colonial port, Chennai is now poised to become a centre for India's "new economy" of information technology, export processing, and back-office services. State and local governments promote tourism and a heritage-conscious cityscape to make Chennai a recognizable "brand" among investment and travel destinations. Using a range of textual, visual, architectural, and ethnographic sources, Hancock grapples with the question of how people in Chennai remember and represent their past, considering the political and economic contexts and implications of those memory practices. Working from specific sites, including a historic district created around an ancient Hindu temple, a living history museum, neo-traditional and vernacular architecture, and political memorials, Hancock examines the spatialization of memory under the conditions of neo-liberalism.

Résumé:
Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas produce interactive projects exploring the conflicts and contradictions of former Soviet republics and their recent transition to capitalism. Born in Lithuania and now living in Vilnius, these artists use the city as a catalyst and a starting point for their analysis of the various impacts caused by a new economic, social and political model on different sectors and generations in society. Developping over different stages, their projects are characterised by the key role played by the idea of the archive, the engagement of experts in different fields (design, music, architecture), and the participation of diverse communities and collective actions. This catalogue of their recently held first retrospective documents all their projects up to date, includes two essays by Bartomeu Mari and Lars Bang Larsen, a biography, and a list of works in the exhibition.

How can design help to make PR events unique and compelling occasions? For the first time, Happening! Design for Events sets its sights on the total design of PR events and uses selected projects to show that there is virtually no limit to the influence and variety that are possible in this area. Exciting and innovative concepts from the designers provoke and potentiate the mix of artistic end in itself and economic persuasion that underlies PR events like product presentations, pop concerts, and cultural exhibitions. The results not only convince potential customers they are a must for everyone involved in organizing big international events. Happening! surveys thirty projects by international companies and design firms including Nike Brand Design and 3deluxe and devotes eight pages to each, with photographs, drawings, and texts by prominent authors. Interviews with the designers close out the book.

Résumé:
During a time when pop stars become famous thanks to sex tapes that have been leaked online, it is clear that the Internet is not immune to the draw of the media. Yet art, academia and activism continue to promote the Internet as an untouched utopia. Animal Spirits: A Bestiary of the Commons addresses the double standard dominating contemporary media discourse and shatters the myths of creative commons, free software and open-source movements, suggesting that "free culture" is an economic parasite siphoning money through peer-to-peer networks. Theorist and digital fetishist Matteo Pasquinelli uses the metaphor of the animal body--which Paul Virilio has characterized as instinctual and reactionary--to counter what he sees as a capitalist exploitation of collective imagery, calling for a radical new understanding of the forces at work behind the digital economy and cultural production.

Résumé:
A culmination of four years of photographing throughout Oregon, Washington and Northern California, Sawdust Mountain focuses on the tenuous relationship between industries reliant upon natural resources and the communities they support. Timber and salmon are the bedrock of a regional Northwest identity, but the environmental impact of these declining industries has been increasingly at odds with the contemporary ideal of sustainability. In this, his second book, Johnson reveals a landscape imbued with an uncertain future--no longer the region of boomtowns built upon the riches of massive old-growth forests. Johnson, a Seattle native, describes his photographs as, "a melancholy love letter of sorts, my own personal ramblings..." Through this poetic approach, Sawdust Mountain records a region affected by historic economic complexities and, by extension, one aspect of our fraught relationship with the environment in the twenty-first century.

Résumé:
Social theories of modernity focus on the nineteenth century as the period when Western Europe was transformed by urbanization. Cities became thriving metropolitan centers as a result of economic, political, and social changes wrought by the industrial revolution. In Cultural Capitals, Karen Newman demonstrates that speculation and capital, the commodity, the crowd, traffic, and the street, often thought to be historically specific to nineteenth-century urban culture, were in fact already at work in early modern London and Paris. The author challenges the notion of a rupture between premodern and modern societies and shows how London and Paris became cultural capitals. Drawing upon poetry, plays, and prose by writers such as Shakespeare, Scudéry, Boileau, and Donne, as well as popular materials including pamphlets, ballads, and broadsides, she examines the impact of rapid urbanization on cultural production.
