Résumé:
Picking up where his best-selling City of Bits left off, Mitchell argues that we must extend the definitions of architecture and urban design to encompass virtual places as well as physical ones, and interconnection by means of telecommunication links as well as by pedestrian circulation and mechanized transportation systems. He proposes strategies for the creation of cities that not only will be sustainable but will make economic, social, and cultural sense in an electronically interconnected and global world. The new settlement patterns of the twenty-first century will be characterized by live/work dwellings, 24-hour pedestrian-scale neighborhoods rich in social relationships, and vigorous local community life, complemented by far-flung configurations of electronic meeting places and decentralized production, marketing, and distribution systems. Neither digiphile nor digiphobe, Mitchell advocates the creation of e-topias--cities that work smarter, not harder.

Résumé:
In this masterwork of original thinking and research, Shoshana Zuboff provides startling insights into the phenomenon that she has named surveillance capitalism. Zuboff vividly brings to life the consequences as surveillance capitalism advances from Silicon Valley into every economic sector. Vast wealth and power are accumulated in ominous new 'behavioral futures markets,' where predictions about our behavior are bought and sold, and the production of goods and services is subordinated to a new 'means of behavioral modification.' The threat has shifted from a totalitarian Big Brother state to a ubiquitous digital architecture: a 'Big Other' operating in the interests of surveillance capital. Zuboff’s comprehensive and moving analysis lays bare the threats to twenty-first century society: a controlled 'hive' of total connection that seduces with promises of total certainty for maximum profit — at the expense of democracy, freedom, and our human future.

Résumé:
We live an age of nostalgia, incarnated by populist fantasies of "taking back control" and making nations "great again". In the long aftermath of the 2007-08 economic crisis, nostalgia has been established as the cultural zeitgeist of Western society. Populist fantasies of nostalgia represent a cry for help against the demise of the societal model of the postwar era, based on stable employment and mass consumption. The promise of an impossible return to the "good life" of the 20th century, Gandini contends, particularly appeals to the older generations, who are incapable of making sense of the evolution of Western societies after decades of globalization and neoliberal policies. The younger generations, in the meantime, are instead trying to build a new "good life" based on another form of return, this time to old practices of craft production and consumption.

Résumé:
This book contributes to the development of new architectural approaches to informal neighborhoods and to a better understanding of human habitats that relate spatial issues to broader economic and political questions. The contributors analyze feasible and effective practical actions located in Africa, Latin America, and India, drawing upon empiric work to contextualize existing neighborhoods. Complementing essays explore the deeply intertwined nature of spatial practice, cultural identity, and social engagement. Together, the contributors AbdouMaliq Simone, Paulo Moreira, Elisa Silva, Julia King, and Ines Weizman uncover new modes of making architecture; map new ways for architects to engage with contested communities; address geographic differentiations on a local scale, rather than between various continents only; and explore interconnections between particular neighborhoods and their wider contexts. A conversation between the five contributors, moderated by Matthew Barac, rounds out this volume.

Résumé:
Our time is an urban age. More people live in cities than ever before, cities are growing larger and denser than ever, and urbanity has reached unprecedented levels of complexity. This boom in urbanization began in earnest around the turn of the twentieth century when technological advancement and the extraction of seemingly endless supplies of natural resources propelled urban development. As urban populations steadily increased, architects and planners were not only faced with designing housing and public space but also with responding to emerging societal challenges such as political tensions, reconstruction, decolonization, economic crises, growing climatic concerns, and cultural shifts. Through the analysis of more than one hundred richly illustrated urban design projects and initiatives, this book provides a comprehensive history of how these challenges have fomented new attitudes and approaches in the discipline of urban design.

Résumé:
In this sweeping history, from the Stone Age to the present day, Witold Rybczynski shows how architectural ideals have been affected by technological, economic, and social changes—and by changes in taste. The host of examples ranges from places of worship such as Hagia Sophia and Brunelleschi’s Duomo to living spaces such as the Katsura Imperial Villa and the Alhambra, national icons such as the Lincoln Memorial and the Sydney Opera House, and skyscrapers such as the Seagram Building and Beijing’s CCTV headquarters. Rybczynski’s narrative emphasizes the ways that buildings across time and space are united by the human desire for order, meaning, and beauty. This is the story of architecture’s physical manifestation of the universal aspiration to celebrate, honor, and commemorate, and an exploration of the ways that each building is a unique product of patrons, architects, and builders.

Résumé:
How does the world’s fifth largest population express itself in terms of architecture? Is there any common language when it comes to planning and construction? For the past seven decades, both Indonesian and international architects have developed new ideas in order to fulfill the demands of the country’s 250 million inhabitants, in line with economic progress. Imelda Akmal’s Architectural Guide Indonesia presents over one hundred must-visit buildings which date from the post-independence era, starting in 1945, to the present day. This book explores buildings that still embrace traditional Indonesian architectural heritage as well as those whose design is based on practical considerations, thus offering a valuable insight into the works of emerging and established architects. In total the guide features carefully selected buildings with all salient information as to their dates of construction, architects and locality by way of QR codes.

Résumé:
The Bitter Years was the title of a seminal exhibition held in 1962 at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, curated by Edward Steichen, and 2012 marks its fiftieth anniversary. The show featured 209 images by photographers who worked under the aegis of the U.S. Farm Security Administration (FSA) in 1935–41, as part of Roosevelt’s New Deal. The FSA, set up to combat rural poverty during the Great Depression, included an ambitious photography project that launched many photographic careers, most notably those of Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. The exhibition featured their work as well as that of ten other FSA photographers, including Ben Shahn, Carl Mydans and Arthur Rothstein. Their images are among the most remarkable in documentary photography--testimonies of a people in crisis, hit by the full force of economic turmoil and the effects of drought and dust storms.
