Résumé:
The firm of Patkau architects, founded in 1978 and based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has achieved international renown for work that draws on the principles of modern architecture and is simultaneously inspired by the traditions and often spectacular landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The office is known for a straightforward, multifaceted expression of material and detail as well as a focus on the sculpture that is inherent in architecture. This monograph includes cultural and institutional projects, such as the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, the National Library of Quebec in Montreal, and a major addition to the Winnipeg Centennial Library; schools, notably the Seabird Island School and the Strawberry Vale School; and a series of residences, including the Shaw house, with a dramatic elevated lap pool, and the inventive Petite Maison du Weekend (Small Weekend House), a prototype for a self-sufficient holiday house for two.

Résumé:
At age eleven, Michael Kenna developed his first roll of black and white film in a makeshift darkroom at St. Joseph’s College, Upholland, the seminary he attended with the idea of becoming a Catholic priest. Kenna abandoned his religious calling after leaving the seminary, but his experiences there have continued to inform his work for decades. These photographs were taken when Kenna returned to visit the now-shuttered school in the early 2000s. Kenna is also revisiting a way of life that may be disappearing—not only the, at times, ruthless discipline of the British boarding school, but also the somber beauty of religious practice. His camera captures the architecture of the school’s built environment as well as its spiritual architecture. Kenna’s detailed biographical essay about his experiences and observations at St. Joseph's reveal much about the way Kenna thinks and works. A critical essay by Vincent Miles focuses on the 110-year history of the college, contextualizing Kenna’s time there.

Résumé:
The work of Japanese architect Toyo Ito explores the dynamic relationship between buildings and their environments. His principal focus is on developing an architecture free of the grid system, which he believes homogenizes people and their lives. Toyo Ito: Forces of Nature documents the architects 2009 Kassler lecture at the Princeton University School of Architecture. Told primarily in Ito's own voice, the book features the edited lecture transcript, as well as an interview with the architect by Julian Worrall and a new translation of Ito's 1980 essay The Projection of the Profane World onto the Sacred. Projects illustrated in the book include: Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (unbuilt), Taichung Opera House, Tama Art University Library, and Kakamigahara Crematorium. Bringing together different strands of a long and fruitful career, Toyo Ito: Forces of Nature concludes with an afterword by Ito that addresses the exhibition Home for All, a response to Japans earthquake and tsunami disasters in March 2011.

Résumé:
In 1969 and 1970, Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974) participated in a series of interviews with a young German architectural historian, Heinrich Klotz, then a visiting professor at Yale University, and John W. Cook, who was teaching architecture at the Yale Divinity School. Louis I. Kahn in Conversation provides the first full edited transcript of these candid, illuminating interviews, which provide insights into Kahn’s philosophy of architecture. The conversations touch on many of his iconic works, including the unbuilt City Tower Project for Philadelphia, the Yale University Art Gallery, the First Unitarian Church in Rochester, and major international projects then under construction, as well as the Yale Center for British Art, Kahn’s final building, on which he was beginning work at the time. Illustrated with dozens of plans, drawings, and photographs, the book also features an introduction by Jules David Prown, the first director of the Yale Center for British Art, who recommended Kahn as its architect.

Founded in 2000 by four classmates from Barcelona’s Vallès School of Architecture, Harquitectes exudes a clear ambition toward universal relevance while being rooted in Catalonia. Which is why their architecture still holds a particularly Mediterranean feel, blurring the threshold between inside and outside. Simply put, their buildings are passive thermal machines that harmonise the built and natural surroundings to achieve comfort. Of the eighteen projects featured here, half are public buildings while the rest are private residences. Needless to say, their detailed and holistic approach has garnered much-deserved acclaim in the 21st-century architecture world.
