Résumé:
Material World is the first monograph on the celebrated Canadian photographer. MacCallum's rich black and white images of sprawling industrial landscapes, luminous interior spaces of warehouses and factories, the jumbled chaos of downtown hardware and textiles outlets, all sing with an austere grace and a fine attention to detail. His objective documentary style avoids obvious commentary, allowing the material presence of the subject matter to emerge. The work comes from a keen interest in social history and the series of photographs represented here tell a story of commerce, labour and the economic relationship of cities to their industrial hinterlands. Accompanying the plates are contextual texts by novelist and media columnist Russell Smith, curator Michael Baker and artist Terence Dick, as well as an illuminating interview with the artist. This beautiful, accessible book presents the remarkable work of Peter MacCallum to a broad range of readers.

Résumé:
An architectural view of one of the world's most dynamic and exciting cities. Shanghai's explosive development since the early 1990s has provided students and fans of architecture with myriad examples of superlatives: from the world's tallest buildings to its longest bridges. As timely as it is comprehensive, this collection of essays confronts the broader concerns of Shanghai's role as a harbinger of China's future and a global testing ground. The essays cover the socio-political, cultural, and historic aspects of the city as well as offer more pointed topical analyses of urban design, preservation, and the developments of the city's waterfronts. Throughout the book, color photographs and illustrations examine thirty ongoing and completed projects. The resulting overview presents a vibrant city of tension and contradiction, one that both mirrors and drives China's struggle to break free from economic constraints while adhering to its political ideals.

Résumé:
"A sustainable bodega and hotel in Rioja" presents the studio of the Yale Edward P. Bass Distinguished Visiting Architecture Fellowship taught by John Spence, entrepreneur and chairman of Karma Resorts worldwide with architect Andy Bow, a senior partner at Foster & Partners in London; environmental engineer Patrick Bellew, principal of Atelier Ten; and Timothy Newton of the Yale faculty. The studio proposed designs for a world-class winery and hotel complex in Rioja, Spain where wineries are both vernacular and exuberant in design. The students were challenged to address social, economic, and environmental sustainability in a holistic and integrated way. The project resulted in a range of strategies to sustainably harvest, engage local workforce, integrate landscape, and source materials responsibly. The project features attractions and symbiotic food production to facilitate tourist visits. Edited by Henry Chan and Nina Rappaport the book is designed by MGMT.design and is distributed by Actar D.

Résumé:
In 1931, in response to the Great Depression and subsequent collapse of the building industry, Martin Wagner (1885–1957), then head of planning for Berlin, formulated plans for an adaptable micro-house called “the growing house.” Working with Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Hilberseimer, Erich Mendelssohn, Hans Poelzig and Hans Scharoun, the growing house was designed to be modified with the changing socioeconomic circumstances of its inhabitants, providing only what was necessary and expedient. Wagner’s coruscating foreword outlining his proposals for a new social, technical and economic fabric shifting the dwelling to the center of the world is published here for the first time. Historical and contemporary black-and-white and color illustrations, drawings, plans and photographs of the prototype are accompanied by commentary from Franziska Bollerey, Ludovica Scarpa, Tom Avermaete and Tatjana Schneider, demonstrating that the growing house is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago.

Résumé:
This issue of Harvard Design Magazine investigates and unpacks the contents, containers, and systems of storage that organize our world. Storage is the aggregation and containment of the material and immaterial stuff of culture; but also the safeguarding—or hoarding—of energy and tools for some imagined future purpose. How does all this stuff mask or overcompensate for economic and ecological bankruptcy? Is storage about greed or need? Storage, perhaps, is everything we can live without but insist on living with. "Shelf Life" explores what’s inside the box (shed, tank, urn, vault, crypt, crate, case, pot, bag, vat, morgue, safe, bin, archive, warehouse, cabinet, cellar, cemetery, depository, locker, freezer, landfill, library). Even as we attempt to reduce and recycle, the stuff that we dispose of also needs to be stored. Where do we put it? Our planet is now a saturated receptacle. This warehouse is full, and we’re all inside it.

Between 1945 and 1961, an estimated 2.5 million people fled East Germany in search of the political and economic freedom offered by West Germany. To thwart this tide of defections, on the morning of August 13, 1961, hundreds of East German troops began erecting the Berlin wall—a barrier that would take nearly twenty years to complete and would eventually span 166 kilometers. In Postcards from Checkpoint Charlie, the Bodleian Library assembles a stunning collection of images to document the wall’s impact worldwide. The postcards in this fascinating volume trace the development of the wall—from its beginnings as a simple stretch of barbed wire to the daunting final structure made of concrete and containing over 300 watchtowers. The images capture scenes of tension and urgency, such as those at Checkpoint Charlie, where we see Allied and East German soldiers coldly observing one another through binoculars.

This vibrantly designed, updated and expanded edition celebrates every facet of the skyscraper as an architectural icon. Few buildings rivet our attention like skyscrapers. As the race to build higher and higher continues, these symbols of success and economic power dominate and reshape urban skylines across the globe. Opening with Chicago s Reliance Building, built in 1894, and closing with plans for the London Bridge Tower, scheduled to be completed in 2011, eye-catching two to four page spreads in this up-to-date and comprehensive volume capture over fifty of the world s most important skyscrapers. Each building is breathtakingly photographed and an accompanying text offers intriguing historical details, notes on construction, and engineering feats. Tracing the evolution of these magnificent structures, Skyscrapers illustrates their significance not only in architectural history, but also as a reflection of humankind s most competitive and optimistic urges.

Résumé:
One of the most influential Marxist theorists of the twentieth century, Henri Lefebvre pioneered the study of the modern state in an age of accelerating global economic integration and fragmentation. Shortly after the 1974 publication of his landmark book The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre embarked on one of the most ambitious projects of his career: a consideration of the history and geographies of the modern state through a monumental study that linked several disciplines, including political science, sociology, geography, and history. State, Space, World collects a series of Lefebvre’s key writings on the state from this period. Making available in English for the first time the as-yet-unexplored political aspect of Lefebvre’s work, it contains essays on philosophy, political theory, state formation, spatial planning, and globalization, as well as provocative reflections on the possibilities and limits of grassroots democracy under advanced capitalism.

Résumé:
In "Manufacturing Montreal" Robert Lewis provides a detailed historical geographic account of a major North American city's industrial landscape from the beginnings of industrialization to the Great Depression. Challenging the traditional view that urban expansion due to industrial decentralization is a twentieth-century phenomenon, Lewis demonstrates that the process of industrial decentralization has been ongoing since the 1850s. Lewis's overall thesis is that the economic and social imperatives underlying industrial capitalism periodically reshaped the manufacturing geography of Montreal, as it did in many other North American cities. Time and again, the move of factories to the urban fringe shaped the social geography of the city by creating working-class residential neighborhoods. A particular strength of the book is its detailed examination of the role that utilities, transportation, technological change, investment, political control of land use, and labor markets had in the manufacturing of Montreal's factory districts.
