Résumé:
A book for all the senses, exuding the flowery scent of wallflower, tufted violet, vanilla, calamint, lavender, and sage. Olafur Eliasson (*1967 in Copenhagen) is one of the most famous artists of his generation. In his installations, the Icelandic artist deals with aspects of land art, transplanting his contemporary interpretations of it to museums and thoughtfully planned park settings. The scented tunnel created for Wolfsburg, Germany's motor city, elucidates a fascinating interplay of nature and technology, where multiple sensory impressions combine to form a whole in the observer's perception. This publication documents Dufttunnel throughout an entire season. The various blooming phases of different plants are accompanied by scientific and art-historical interpretations of the Dufttunnel phenomenon.

Résumé:
If there is, indeed, nothing lovelier than a tree, Connecticut-based artist Bryan Nash Gill (1961-2013) showed us why. Creating prints from cross sections of trees, Gill revealed the sublime power locked inside their arboreal rings, patterns not only of great beauty but also a year-by-year record of the life and times of the fallen or damaged logs. The artist rescued the wood from the property surrounding his studio and neighboring land, extracted and prepared blocks of various species--including ash, maple, oak, spruce, and willow--and then printed them by carefully following and pressing the contours of the rings until the intricate designs transferred from tree to paper.

Résumé:
Existing patterns of urbanization are unsustainable in the long run. Current development practices consume enormous amounts of land and resources, damage local ecosystems, produce pollutants, create huge inequalities between groups of people, and undermine local community and quality of life. Unfortunately planning has itself led to many unsustainable development practices. "Planning for Sustainability" presents a straightforward, systematic analysis of how more sustainable cities and towns can be brought about. It does so in a highly readable manner that considers in turn each scale of planning: international, national, regional, municipal, neighbourhood, site, and building. In the process it illustrates how sustainability initiatives at these different scales interrelate and how an overall framework can be developed for more liveable communities.

Résumé:
The author sees connections that others do not, and uses those insights to make speculative proposals that often involve urban land use. This book is a collection of what he calls "detritus"; from the link he created between the historic Dutch city of Utrecht and a homeless camp in the California desert called Slab City. The mixed narratives of individual freedom and communal living meet in both places, as diverse as they may seem, as do other places drawn together using non-linear, multi-layered methods to explore subjects like the history of the Colorado River, the social functions of books and libraries, and disciplines as diverse as chemistry, architecture, social psychology, agriculture, language and disaster response.

Résumé:
“Mexico is truly the promised land of abstract art,” Josef Albers wrote to his former Bauhaus colleague Vasily Kandinsky in 1936. Josef Albers in Mexico reveals the profound link between the art and architecture of ancient Mesoamerica and Albers’ abstract works on canvas and paper. With his wife, the artist Anni Albers, Albers toured pre-Columbian archeological sites and monuments during his 12 or more trips to Mexico and other Latin American countries between 1935 and 1968. On each visit, Albers took black-and-white photographs of pyramids, shrines, sanctuaries and landscapes, which he later assembled into rarely seen photo collages. The resulting works demonstrate Albers’ continued formal experimentation with geometry, this time accentuating a pre-Columbian aesthetic.

Cities are built site by site. "Site planning" —the art and science of designing settlements on the land—encompasses a range of activities undertaken by architects, planners, urban designers, landscape architects, and engineers. This book offers a comprehensive, up-to-date guide to site planning that is global in scope. It covers planning processes and standards, new technologies, sustainability, and cultural context, addressing the roles of all participants and stakeholders and offering extensive treatment of practices in rapidly urbanizing countries. Kevin Lynch and Gary Hack wrote the classic text on the subject, and this book takes up where the earlier book left off. It can be used as a textbook and will be an essential reference for practitioners.

Résumé:
This stunning and lyrical volume highlights the personal work of Lola Álvarez Bravo (1903–1993), one of Mexico’s foremost photographers. Álvarez Bravo worked as a photojournalist, commercial photographer, portraitist, and educator and played a critical role in her country’s cultural renaissance. In the years following the Mexican Revolution, she captured a profoundly transformative moment for the country’s land, architecture, and people. She remains best known for these works and for her portraits of prominent modernists working in Mexico, including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Lola Álvarez Bravo delves into a lesser-known body of work, in which attention to pattern, light, and abstraction guides the artist’s depictions of urban and rural landscapes and their inhabitants.

Résumé:
'Saints and sinners, whores and housewives, swindlers and laborers alike attempted a hasty adjustment to novel conditions in a land that seemed strange and forbidding', writes William R. Hunt in his narrative history of Alaska mining. Hunt offers an exciting anecdotal account that follows hungry prospectors, canny shopkeepers, hopeful hangers-on, and crafty lawyers through the gold mining camps and temporary towns of nineteenth-century Alaska. Hunt has hiked and mined many of the same claims he writes about in the book, and North of 53[degrees] offers a rare glimpse into far-flung communities from Skagway to the Yukon to the deep interior of Alaska to the Iditarod and Nome on the Bering Sea.

Résumé:
This book examines modern-day Switzerland and its changing spatial reality. Describing settlement areas as either ”urban” or ”rural” is no longer apt as we now live in a collage of urban, suburban, and rural elements which together form conglomerations with several centres over large areas of land. This requires new political solutions, challenging the institutional framework of federalism and the concept of local government. The study comprises contributions by experts from the fields of architecture, sociology, geography, politics and economics, which take into account the various perspectives. The prominent Dutch architect Winy Maas from MVRDV presents as an outsider a qualified vision for a Switzerland of the future, and also provides visual material to illustrate other contributions.

Ferns are the most remarkable of plants, and their science is both complex and beautiful. Among our most ancient plants, they have a unique way of reproducing, and their story reveals much about our planet's evolution. This book explores how ferns migrated from seat to land, how they sought light and interacted within ecosystems, how they survived mass extinctions, and what their ability to adapt can tell us about our warming Earth. Written by scientists with a passion for communicating impactful research that commands media and social media attention, and illustrated with jewel-like details by an award-winning botanical artist, ''Ferns'' has much to say about our planet's botanical past, present, and future.
