Résumé:
'Strange Networks' debuts a new body of artwork and studies by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne. Emerging from the same interests that shape the design philosophy of his internationally renowned architecture firm Morphosis, the works explore the tension between organizational systems and chance behavior, between the manual and digital, and between individual and collective authorship. Reproduced in detail, the intricate lithographic prints and digitally derived sculptural works -- or 'drawdels' for how they combine the notion of drawing and modelling - -embody a search for forms and methods resonant with our contemporary state of instability and hyper-connection.

Résumé:
The sixteenth instalment of the ‘Contemporary Architect’s Concept Series’ takes the delicately structured work of Japanese visual artist and architect Ryuji Nakamura as its theme. Nakamura’s often room-filling installations are formed by regular patterns of lines that play with perceptions of scale, and are occasionally so thin as to almost disappear into the space around them. Filled with fascinating objects, structures and images, the book accompanies each project with short, contemplative texts by Nakamura that set forth an array of queries into the nature of structure, form, variation and spatiality. A captivating look at the complexity and depth of lines in architecture.

Résumé:
The diverse works of architect Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661–1736) range from small architectural details to ambitious urban plans, from new parish churches to work on the monument of his age, St. Paul’s Cathedral. As a young man Hawksmoor assisted Christopher Wren and John Vanbrugh, emerging from these apprenticeships to design some of the most vigorous and dramatic buildings in England. In this book, architectural historian Vaughan Hart presents a fresh view of Hawksmoor’s built and planned work. In addition, Hart offers the first coherent explanation of Hawksmoor’s theory of architecture. The book explains why Hawksmoor’s buildings look the way they do, what contemporary events influenced his work, and how such ancient buildings as Solomon’s temple and Mausolus’s tomb inspired him. Underscoring the unique qualities of the architect’s accomplishments and aspirations, Hart establishes with new clarity Hawksmoor’s vital role in the development of English architecture.
