Résumé:
The essays in this volume were written on the occasion of the symposium on 'Landscape Architecture in Mutation' held at the ETH Zurich in October 2004. The contributors consider the changed aesthetic, functional and natural characteristics of urban landscapes, and present suitable approaches and procedures for their design and development. This book provides the theoretical background for the "mutation" of landscape architecture, illustrating theory with exemplary planning projects - ranging from individual to geographical scales - in Switzerland, Europe and the USA. The contributors represent various disciplines : landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, engineering, art history and cultural studies. In English with summaries in German.

Résumé:
"Against the anthropocene" scrutinizes the proposal that we are in a human-driven epoch regarding climate change. In this slender but dense volume, cultural theorist T.J. Demos analyzes the biases within contemporary visual culture popular science websites, remote sensing and SatNav imagery, eco-activist mobilizations, and experimental artistic projects demonstrating that it does not merely describe a geologic period, but actively supports the neoliberal financialization of nature, anthropocentric political economy, and endorsement of geo-engineering as a preferred method of approaching climate change. To develop creative alternatives, Demos argues we need to carefully consider the underlying motives the Anthropocene thesis.

Résumé:
At once beautiful works of art and technological wonders, the objects featured in "Making Marvels" demonstrate how European royalty from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment signaled their status through their collections of ingeniously crafted inventions. Featuring 150 exemplary objects ranging from mechanical toys to scientific instruments, timepieces to automata, this study brings to life a glorious period when luxury, a quest for knowledge, scientific invention, and political power combined to produce remarkable works of art. More than frivolous playthings, these works inspired technical innovations that influenced a broad spectrum of activities, including astronomy, engineering, and artisanal craftsmanship.

Résumé:
The third volume in a four-part series on ALICE's teachings, ''Beyond the Object: The Imagination of Space'' follows up on ''The House 1 Catalogue'' and ''The Invention of Space'', proposing an alternative cultural history of architecture derived from the notion of spatial design rather than technical engineering and construction. Among the topics discussed are the common and scientific understandings of space and how they can be applied to contemporary architectural practice. Using Zurich as an exemplar of urban planning and development, the new volume combines fact with fiction to broaden the view upon future scenarios.

Résumé:
Reyner Banham was a pioneer in arguing that technology, human needs, and environmental concerns must be considered an integral part of architecture. No historian before him had so systematically explored the impact of environmental engineering on the design of buildings and on the minds of architects. In this revision of his classic work, Banham has added considerable new material on the use of energy, particularly solar energy, in human environments. Included in the new material are discussions of Indian pueblos and solar architecture, the Centre Pompidou and other high-tech buildings, and the environmental wisdom of many current architectural vernaculars.
