Projet
Casal das Figueiras, Setubal
CD034.S1.1975.PR02
Description:
This project series contains seven reproductions of drawings displayed in the exhibit to document the Casal das Figueiras neighbourhood, in Setúbal, south of Lisbon, Portugal. The exhibit text explained that: ... the Setúbal port-city experienced the political vibrations of the revolutionary year with great intensity. The Casal das Figueiras neighbourhood was designed for a fishing community living in a difficult area to build on due to its steep incline. The challenge that the project architect Gonçalo Byrne faced was to maintain the structure of single-family housing with the outhouse or courtyard, the typology that the local populations requested, while making a large urban gesture. The proposal was based on two types of housing (the square and rectangular plans). This overcame the problem of the 36 percent slope in an architecturally striking manner, while it also managed to fulfil the major requirement inherent in any SAAL operation of minimizing costs. (The SAAL Process, Housing in Portugal 1974–76) Gonçalo Byrne worked for SAAL/Lisbon and Central South with Ana Ferreira Rebocho, Berta Sá Caetano and the residents' association Casal das Figueiras, that was founded on October 30th, 1975. The project included 420 dwellings. The operation began in July 1975 , with a construction date in October 1976. This project series contains reproductions of implementation plans and design development drawings. The original drawings were produced in 1978-1979 and were reproduced in 2015 for the exhibit.

Description:
This project subseries documents the Clubhouse de Vidago in Vidago, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 49/00. The office assigned the dates 2007-2010 to this project. The project, part of larger renovations to the Vidago Palace Hotel, consisted of the conversion of an old building into the new golf clubhouse. Originally constructed in 1886, the stone building was first used for bottling the Vidago spring water. The clubhouse consisted of a large restaurant and bar space, with white walls, high ceilings and a central skylight to illuminate its spacious interior. A golf shop and dressing room were also part of the clubhouse. Siza designed two other buildings for the new 18-hole golf course, the golf academy and the maintenance building, but neither of these was ever realized. This project subseries is recorded through photographic materials, drawings, study models and textual records dating from 2002-2015. These records document the clubhouse, the golf academy and the maintenance building. The photographic materials are mostly printed digital photos showing the site, construction work, the model and reference images. The drawings include studies, plans, elevations, sections, details, and structural, mechanical and electrical drawings. The textual records include furniture documentation, records for permits, budgets, supplier catalogues, correspondence and meeting minutes. There are also a number of records documenting various mechanical, electrical and structural systems.

Description:
This project series documents the Parque de Pedras Salgadas in Pedras Salgadas, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 50/00. The office assigned the date 2002 to this project. The project consisted of extensive work to the spa resort located in Pedras Salgadas Park for owner VMPS - Águas & Turismo, S.A, part of Unicer (now Super Bock Group). The work included the demolition of many buildings, the restauration and alterations of others and the construction of new buildings. Work on the Hotel Avelames, the thermal spa, the public pools and the Casa de Chá were the primary focus of the site for Siza. These four components of the project were divided by the office, with the Hotel Avelames, spa and Casa de Chá arranged together under AP178.S1.2002.PR06.SS1 and the public pools arranged under AP178.S1.2002.PR06.SS2. Architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade also constructed eco-houses and treehouses on the site later on. This project was realized in tandem with a similar project by Siza, the Parque de Vidago (AP178.S1.2002.PR05), also owned by Unicer. For this reason, the materials for both projects are mixed together. A large number of materials for this project can be found in project subseries AP178.S1.2002.PR05.SS1. These files have been identified at the file level in the Parque de Vidago project subseries.

Description:
This album depicts photographs, plans, sketches of Stonehenge and texts. Preface is signed by Sir Henry James, 29th May 1867, Southhampton. Album has appendix and List of Books inserted at the end. "Col. Sir Henry James, Director-General of the Ordnance Survey, was a strong believer that photography had to be utilized as a major tool for mapping and survey work and he employed the Royal Engineers for that purpose. Colonel James appears in several of the Stonehenge photographs published by the Ordnance Survey. [...] Stonehenge is the world's most famous, large megalithic stone circle and is usually designated as a site used for religious worship in Neolithic Britain. However, the first use of this locality for documented ritual activity goes back to the Mesolithic and the erection of several large totem poles perhaps as early as 8,000 BC (Stonehenge O). Lunar observations preceded the construction of a causeway c.3200 BC, followed by an earth circle and Heel Stones c.3100 BC (Stonehenge 1a) and the Aubrey Holes (Stonehenge 1b). The Stonehenge site was then abandoned for about 1,000 years when large bluestones quarried in Wales were brought to the site and made into the Double Bluestone Circle with Avenue. 2150 BC (Stonehenge II). Soon thereafter sarsen stones were brought in from Avebury to build the great Sarsen Circle and Trilithon Horseshoe, 2100 BC (Stonehenge IIIz). Bluestones were brought back and added as the Bluestone Circle and Bluestone Horseshoe to the sarsen monument, 1800 BC (Stonehenge IIId). The sacred avenue was extended to the River Avon, 1100 BC (Stonehenge IV), the last phase of megalithic construction at this site. Note that the great stone circle and all construction at the Stonehenge site was completed several hundred years before we can postulate Celtic druids in the vicinity. We can only mention in passing that Stonehenge was embedded within a large ritual complex, where several of the ten megalithic constructions were also monumental in scale. Integration between these structures may not have been well planned in advance, but assuredly was articulated as each was built." Neolithic Britian Online.
