Résumé:
Crowe evaluates the connections between the natural and manmade in our towns and cities, farms and gardens, architecture and works of civil engineering. He draws on the lessons to be learned from the buildings and cities of the past in restoring critical traditional values that have been lost to modernism which tends to see the built world almost exclusively through the abstractions of postenlightenment science. Crowe's starting point is indigenous architecture, the origins of our cities and towns where the first geometries were imposed on nature. He traces our separation from nature over time, from the long period of human history when nature served as a paradigm for creation.

Résumé:
This publication bridges architecture and textile by exploring fiber architectures from the micro scale of biological systems to the macro scale of textile and built structures. Selected case studies, essays, and interviews reflect on cultural practices and materials research through the lens of textile thinking. In the quest for sustainable and resilient approaches that meet the challenges of our time, the book presents fascinating approaches heralding a paradigm shift by working with fibrous materiality: structures become flexible and adaptive, they interact with their environment. As a source of inspiration, the book assembles exceptional contributions from the fields of architecture, art, material science, cultural history, design, engineering, mathematics, microbiology, and textile technology.

Résumé:
Advances in Architectural Geometry is a symposium presenting both theoretical and practical work linked to new geometric developments applicable to architecture. This symposium aims to gather the diverse components of contemporary architectural trends which push the building envelope towards free form, and which respond to these design challenges with a renewed mathematical rigor. A research section of 26 papers is preceded by an interview with Frédéric Migayrou (Deputy director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre de Création Industrielle – Pompidou Centre), where he explores the larger context of free-form architecture with respect to contemporary architectural design and the last two centuries of structural engineering.

Résumé:
This issue of a+u magazine features the work of Sancho-Madridejos Architecture Office (S-MAO). An ensemble of 20 projects, framed according to two investigative themes, are featured in this monograph, supported by axonometric diagrams and concept models. An essay by the founders’ close friends, Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa, reveals the deeper origins to S-MAO’s approach and describes how their trials and investigations have yielded 'new processes in engineering, new construction systems, and a new language'. Based in Madrid and established in 1982, the office has developed a nuanced and committed practice, rooted in investigations in plastic arts and aesthetic theory.

Résumé:
Naturalizing Architecture is the new edition of Archilab 2013. Today, through recourse to the most advanced digital tools, architects envisage projects which evolve according to principals similar to those found in nature. The architecture is therefore designed like an organism in constant adaptation, with the ability to evolve in close interaction with the material conditions of its environment. Broadly exceeding the boundaries of their practice, architects now develop a practice at the crossroads of design, computer science, engineering and biology. Conditions for production in the domain of architecture are radically redefined by this convergence, as well as by the constant evolution of the processes and tools for digital manufacturing.

Résumé:
This book verifies the need for the arts and the sciences to work together in order to develop more creative and conceptual approaches to innovation and presentation. By blending ethnographical case studies, scientific viewpoints and critical essays, the focus of this research inquiry is the lab context. For scientists, the lab context is one of the most important educational experiences. For contemporary artists, laboratories are inspiring spaces to investigate, share know-how transfer and search for new collaboration potentials. The nine labs represented in this book are from the natural, computing and engineering sciences. An enclosed comprehensive DVD documents the results, the problems and serves as a guideline for the future of true Art/Sci experiments.

Résumé:
The Emosson region in the Swiss canton of Valais boasts a breathtaking Alpine landscape punctuated by a series of monumental feats in hydroelectric engineering, which include three dams and a power plant hidden in a cavern 600 meters below ground. In "Hydroelectric sublime", the photographers Beatrice Gorelli (born 1996) and Keiichi Kitayama (born 1987) set out to capture the area’s awe-inspiring terrain, and find themselves on a three-year odyssey uncovering the intricate bond between humans, energy and water. Across mountains, seasons and generations, the book peels back the layers of a landscape that exemplifies the coming together of nature and the man-made so sublimely or severely, depending on one’s point of view.

Résumé:
Framed against the backdrop of contemporary waves of feminism and the history of computing design, "In through the side door" foregrounds the stories of the women working in the field of computing and the emergent discipline of interaction design as the graphical user interface was developed. Erin Malone begins with a handful of pioneers who brought to the field various methods from a variety of backgrounds including design, technical communication, social psychology, ethnography, information science, and mechanical engineering. Moving into the early days of desktop computing, the book highlights the women on the teams inventing contemporary desktop computer interfaces and related tools, including those at Xerox PARC, Apple’s Human Interface Group, and Microsoft.
