He began his career by joining the camera club at Chrysler Motors in 1938. Inspired by Ansel Adams, whom he met in 1941, Callahan improved his technique and swiftly developed an artistic voice. In 1946, he was hired by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy to teach photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. In 1961, he moved to Providence, Rhode Island and taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, retiring in 1977. He established his reputation with black and white materials, but also fully explored color photography, especially from the late 1960s onwards. Callahan's work was widely published and exhibited during his lifetime, and was the subject of a major retrospective at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, in 1996.

As such, department stores form intricate examples of how shopping spaces are sites of negotiation of public culture, and of reproducing or creating norms and ideas in society. Inspired by the work of Baudrillard and Butler, Wigley, and Williamson, this book investigates how department stores work as situating structures, in which we not only find what we want, but what we should want, who we are, how our society is arranged, and our role in it - an investigation that challenges our understanding of architecture and planning as well as of society in general. Daniel Koch is a researcher and teacher at the School of Architecture, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Structural Fashion is his doctoral dissertation that develops and improves the theories of his former work on spatial systems as producers of meaning, refocusing the main inquiry onto departement stores.

The collection testifies to a different modernism; not white and austere but colourful, diverse, and full of detail. Modelling Time gives an in-depth portrayal of the so-called ‘Permanent Collection’ of Norwegian scale models, photographs and drawings, tracing its international trajectory of exhibitions from Brussels in 1927 to its last appearance at the World’s Fair in New York in 1939. The book documents the collection’s heydays as part of a vivid international modernist culture, as well as its archival diaspora as it falls into oblivion after WWII. In an extensive, archive-based essay editors Lending and Hvattum give the full context of the collection, while Juliane Derry and Jorge Otero-Pailos look into the models’ materiality and issues of decay. Photographer Frédéric Chaubin reveals 90 buildings sited in fourteen former Soviet Republics which express what he considers to be the fourth age of Soviet architecture. His poetic pictures reveal an unexpected rebirth of imagination, an unknown burgeoning that took place from 1970 until 1990. Contrary to the 1920s and 1950s, no “school” or main trend emerges here. These buildings represent a chaotic impulse brought about by a decaying system. Their diversity announced the end of the Soviet Union. Taking advantage of the collapsing monolithic structure, the holes in the widening net, architects went far beyond modernism, going back to the roots or freely innovating. This puzzle of styles testifies to all the ideological dreams of the period, from the obsession with the cosmos to the rebirth of identity. It also outlines the geography of the USSR, showing how local influences made their exotic twists before the country was brought to its end.

Photographer Frédéric Chaubin reveals 90 buildings sited in fourteen former Soviet Republics which express what he considers to be the fourth age of Soviet architecture. His poetic pictures reveal an unexpected rebirth of imagination, an unknown burgeoning that took place from 1970 until 1990. Contrary to the 1920s and 1950s, no “school” or main trend emerges here. These buildings represent a chaotic impulse brought about by a decaying system. Their diversity announced the end of the Soviet Union. Taking advantage of the collapsing monolithic structure, the holes in the widening net, architects went far beyond modernism, going back to the roots or freely innovating. Hadid’s studio - one leader, three studio assistants, twelve students, and numerous critics - interpreted the contemporary art center as an invitation to experiment with new forms of public space. Specific contemporary works of art became the programme for a series of radical architectural concepts that expand the space of the art, taking on the scale and materiality of full-scale architectural constructs. The studio - and this volume - was divided into ten segments, addressing such issues as programme analysis, spatialities, system conditions, current contemporary art centers, building types, sites, and linearities. Each segment is represented by original renderings, including computer images. The accompanying text is drawn from transcripts of the studio reviews by the critics: Robert A. M.
