Résumé:
Urban fortifications were the most colossal artistic achievements of the Italian Renaissance. Celebrated sculptors, painters, and architects such as Michelangelo, Bramante, Leonardo, Francesco Paciotto, and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger collaborated with humanists and military commanders to design citadels and ramparts. Unprecedented in their geometric sophistication, constructional ambition, and physical grandeur, these monuments profoundly transformed the shape and experience of the built environment. "Form and fortification" challenges the long-held assumption that military architecture was merely an instrument of warfare, restoring the practice to its central place at the nexus of sixteenth-century creative and cultural endeavors. Through a rich array of drawings, archival manuscripts, early printed sources, treatises, and realized works, this book traces the remarkable exchanges between fortification and other arenas of art, design, and engineering.

To open its Frontiers of Architecture series, Denmark's Louisiana Museum of Modern Art chose the engineer, innovative thinker and writer, Cecil Balmond, honoring him with an exhibition of projects past, present and future. This exhibition catalogue, covered in a clear vinyl slipcase, includes loose, abstract sketches, installation photographs and digital renderings of Balmond's various projects--exposing Balmond's varied sources of inspiration, thoughts, working methods and processes. For example, there is a section on his collaboration with the artist Anish Kapoor which documents the 2002 installation of a giant red gramophone-shaped fabric tube at Tate Modern in London. With his unconventional approach to structural engineering, Balmond is an indispensable sparring partner for some of the most challenging and innovative architects of our day, including Toyo Ito, Rem Koolhaas, Alvaro Siza and Daniel Libeskind.

Résumé:
For many architects he is a landmark - Jean Prouvé, creator of the metal curtain wall, pioneer in its application and early initiator of industrialised building techniques. His unfailing ability to combine functional engineering achievements with artistic sensitivity commands recognition. The period covered in this latest volume is significant in many respects. The post-war years placed enormous demands on housing and school construction. In his Maxéville factory Prouvé developed pre-fabricated housing, facade panelling, light filtering and other systems on a large scale. He was inspired by the works of the automobile and aeronautics industry, developing new applications for aluminium, which he presented in the 1954 Aluminium Centenary Pavilion. Moreover, Prouvé's furnitures of this period have become valuable collectors' items, some of which are now being reissued under licence.

Smart design can make solar, wind, and geothermal energy beautiful, affordable, and accessible to all. Thirty-five projects from around the world demonstrate that clean, healthy energy is within reach in every sector and field, from townhouses to schools and offices, and even power plants. Harmonizing nature, technology, and space, each project in "Good energy" shows how design can improve planetary well-being while producing cost savings and creating green jobs. A visual and informative guide to renewal energy: "Good energy" includes over 200 colour photographs showing each project in detail, accompanied by informative essays. The book includes a foreword by artist and landscape designer Walter Hood, founder of Hood Design Studio, and an interview with Mark Z. Jacobson, Stanford University professor of civil and environmental engineering and a cofounder of the Solutions Project.

Résumé:
Santiago Calatrava is an intimate insight into one of the world’s most celebrated architects. Calatrava first made a name for himself in the late 1980s, with delicately designed structures in Zürich that seem to grow out of the earth. He went on to create a series of highly innovative, iconic bridges across Europe and, in recent years, has drawn attention for such large-scale projects as the City of Arts and Sciences in his birth town of Valencia, Spain, and the World Transportation Hub at Ground Zero in New York. Written in the first person and accompanied by a wealth of sketches never seen outside Calatrava’s studio, this book reveals the breadth of his influences, and how they have combined with his background in engineering and architecture to inspire his signature buildings.

Résumé:
Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) was by turns businessman, soldier, playwright, herald and architect of some of the most important country houses of his era. In this book architectural historian Vaughan Hart draws on these diverse interests to examine afresh Vanbrugh's surviving, destroyed and unrealised buildings as well as the designs he executed in collaboration with Nicholas Hawksmoor. It was the fate of Vanbrugh's buildings to be at first maligned and then misunderstood. Hart outlines the contemporary political and social events which influenced the architect and shows how his strikingly original houses, such as those as Seaton Delaval and Grimsthorpe, can be interpreted through reference to classical mythology, renaissance fortifications and medieval houses. Vaughan Hart is Professor of Architecture in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath.
