Résumé:
One of the most influential Marxist theorists of the twentieth century, Henri Lefebvre pioneered the study of the modern state in an age of accelerating global economic integration and fragmentation. Shortly after the 1974 publication of his landmark book The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre embarked on one of the most ambitious projects of his career: a consideration of the history and geographies of the modern state through a monumental study that linked several disciplines, including political science, sociology, geography, and history. State, Space, World collects a series of Lefebvre’s key writings on the state from this period. Making available in English for the first time the as-yet-unexplored political aspect of Lefebvre’s work, it contains essays on philosophy, political theory, state formation, spatial planning, and globalization, as well as provocative reflections on the possibilities and limits of grassroots democracy under advanced capitalism.

Résumé:
Charleroi, the denigrated capital of the Belgian hinterland, is the unlikely new paradigm for a contemporary city. What seems an incoherent jumble of manmade exuberance—a byproduct of modernity, really—transcends the infamous architectural dichotomy between the centre and the periphery. This is the Large City; dispersed and decentralised, it embraces its post-industrial condition. An artificial nature where zero-kilometre food production, electric bikes and trail running enable everyone to live large. Without nostalgia for its industrial ruins, nor contempt for modernity, the city was the subject of a year-long studio led by Kersten Geers at the Academy of Architecture USI in Mendrisio. As a form of “applied theory”, the book presents students’ projects—an imaginary city—coupled with some real projects: Megafactory by OFFICE and Palais des Expositions by Architecten Jan de Vylder Inge Vinck & AgwA. The book features photographs of Charleroi by Stefano Graziani.

Résumé:
If you enter an institutional mineralogical collection, you typically encounter glass cabinets organized by classification systems according to material properties. Yet, each mineral carries with it a history of extraction, destruction, (dis)possession, and global relations. "Transpositional geologies" localizes such collections as indices of the afterlife of colonialism and proposes an evolving political geology, reading mineral specimens as objects of "culture" rather than of "nature." Capturing his five-year artistic engagement and cultural collaboration in Namibia and Germany, Sascha Mikloweit brings together international voices from fields including anthropology, critical theory, geology, history, museum studies, philosophy, poetry, public administration—and the perspectives of boltwoodite, cerussite, or smithsonite. Rock by rock, this exquisitely designed volume invites us to engage with a progressively nuanced reading of geology’s history: its epistemic violence, omissions and racial regimes, and how the lasting residues of its colonial legacies continue to shape our present-day extractive realities.

Résumé:
This book sheds light on the contemporary status of phenomenological discourse in architecture and investigates its current scholastic as well as practical position. Starting with a concise introduction to the philosophical grounds of phenomenology from the points of view of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, it presents a critical reading of the works of some leading figures of architectural phenomenology in both theory and practice, such as Christian Norberg-Schultz, Kenneth Frampton, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Steven Holl. Highlighting the main challenges of the current phenomenological discourse in architecture, this book formulates a more articulated method of 'phenomenological interpretation' – dubbed 'phenomenal phenomenology' - as a new and innovative method of interpreting the built environment. Finally, using Tadao Ando's Langen Foundation Museum as a case study, it investigates the architect's contribution to phenomenological discourse, interprets and analyzes the Museum building using the new heuristic method, and thus provides a clear example of its applicability.

Résumé:
In this new book, Bruno Latour offers answers to questions raised in "We Have Never Been Modern", a work that interrogated the connections between nature and culture. If not modern, he asked, what have we been, and what values should we inherit? Over the last twenty-five years, Latour has developed a research protocol different from the actor-network theory with which his name is now associated—a research protocol that follows the different types of connectors that provide specific truth conditions. These are the connectors that prompt a climate scientist challenged by a captain of industry to appeal to the "institution" of science, with its army of researchers and mountains of data, rather than to “capital-S Science” as a higher authority. Such modes of extension—or modes of existence, Latour argues here—account for the many differences between law, science, politics, and other domains of knowledge.

Résumé:
First published in 2006 (and now rare), and originally written as a dissertation in 1963, "The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture" is the acclaimed American architect Peter Eisenman's masterly formal analysis of architecture. "I wanted to write an analytic work that related what I had learned to see, from Palladio to Terragni, from Raphael to Guido Reni, into some theoretical construct that would bear on modern architecture, but from the point of view of a certain autonomy of form." Here, Eisenman—world famous for his Holocaust Memorial in Berlin (2005)—confronts historicism with theory and the analysis of form, illustrating his observations with numerous precisely executed drawings. "The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture" was Eisenman's dissertation at the University of Cambridge, and was first published as a facsimile edition by Lars Müller Publishers in 2006; that edition is now reprinted in a smaller format.

Résumé:
Ideas gain legitimacy as they are put to some practical use. A study of Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) supports this pragmatism as a way of thinking about truth and meaning. Architecture has a strong pragmatic strand, not least as we think of building users, architecture as a practice, the practical demands of building, and utility. Peirce's commitment to logic led him to investigate the basic elements of logical statements, notably the element of the sign. His best-known contribution to design revolves around his intricate theory of semiotics, the science of signs. The study of semiotics divided around the 1980s between advocates of Peirce's semiotics, and the broader, more politically charged field of structuralism. The latter has held sway in architectural discourse since the 1980s. Why this happened and what we gain by reviving a Peircean semiotics is the task of this book.

Résumé:
Ludwig Wittgenstein’s way to the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, one of the ground-breaking works in the history of philosophy, can rightly be termed an Odyssey. Both in terms of his movements and his intellectual development in the course of writing it, the Tractatus incorporated an exciting, improbable journey. A compendium of scholars has come together at the 100th anniversary of the work’s first official publication in 1922 to detail the main stations in Wittgenstein’s life that would entirely transform philosophy. The years 1912 to 1922 are illuminated through photos, military maps, and letters against the backdrop of one of the most dramatic periods in world history. The complex theory of language developed by Wittgenstein In the Tractatus had an enormous influence not only on philosophy, but extended also to literature, music, film, painting, architecture, anthropology, and economics. Its uniqueness and rigor challenge our perceptions to this day.

Résumé:
Gottfried Semper left behind a voluminous legacy of architectural-theory writings. The manner, in his works, in which he analyzed architecture from a cultural-historical perspective as the key discipline in human artistry continues to exert a deep fascination up until today. The London Writings make available previously unpublished or little-known texts originating during Semper’s exile in London (1850–1855) in a critical and commented edition, including in their original wordings. Swayed by his impressions of the first Great Exhibition of 1851 and as a lecturer at the Department of Practical Art, it was in London that Semper laid the foundations for his theoretical magnum opus Der Stil (Style, 1860/63). He counterpoised the phenomena of the globalized flow of merchandise and a globalization of knowledge that he observed with his thoughts on the global development of architectural culture in all its manifold material, social and political conditions.
