Résumé:
Although a contemporary of Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, Asplund pursued an architecture that does not fit easily into their view of Modernism as a movement that rejected the applied styles and ornamentation of the nineteenth century. Instead, Asplund was at ease with classical or vernacular elements blending with modernist ideals, and displayed a sensitive understanding of the relationship between architecture and its surrounding landscape. His abilities are amply demonstrated in masterpieces like the Woodland Cemetery. In 1915 Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz won the competition to plan a new cemetery for Stockholm. Their romantic plan, in which a symbolically straight, narrow pathway abruptly curves blindly away into the forest, and with open fields capped by burial-mound-like hillocks, earned both of them further commissions for buildings within the cemetery. Asplund’s Woodland Chapel of 1920 is tucked into the forest and uses classical elements such as Doric columns, but sparingly and in unusual ways, while manipulating scale in ways that further the spiritual and contemplative nature of the building. The Crematorium and Monument Hall of 1935 are dignified and powerful, unornamented but not austere, to offer comfort to those who use them. The Gothenburg Law Courts, another critical work which was finally completed in 1937, shows how Asplund relates the architecture of Modernism to a historical plan and façade. Buildings such as the architect’s own summer house at Stennäs and the crematoria at Kviberg and Skövde, dating from the later part of his life when he had begun to embrace Modernism, still show traditional classical and vernacular influences and are evidence that not all forms of Modernism constituted a fresh start.

Résumé:
Aalto's career overlapped both chronologically and ideologically with those of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, but his commitment to a humanitarian ideal, inspired by nature, set him apart from his purist Modernist contemporaries. His beautiful buildings, including the Paimio Sanatorium, Villa Mairea, Jyvaskla Worker's Club, Church of the Three Crosses and Baker House Dormitory, with their curving facades, careful interaction of wood, concrete and brick, and innovative uses of emerging technologies, show the touch of a true master. With contributions from Colin St John Wilson (architect of the British Library), Juhani Pallasmaa (Aalto specialist at the University of Technology, Helsinki), as well as an exclusive interview with Shigeru Ban, Alvar Aalto: Through the Eyes of Shigeru Ban offers a refreshing new take on Aalto's architecture and design. Added to this, three new translations of Aalto's own writings provide an insight into the workings of his mind, and the theoretical and philosophical discussions that he was engaging with in the 1920s and 30s. Beautifully illustrated, Alvar Aalto: Through the Eyes of Shigeru Ban features stunning new images by photographer Judith Turner, whose abstract interpretation of Aalto's work brings out the poetry of his buildings, and shows them in a whole new light. Hitherto unseen archive images from the Aalto foundation are also published for the first time, making this a truly unique publication. The environmental concerns of the twenty-first century mean that Aalto’s legacies have become ever more apparent. This timely retrospective pays tribute to one of the great masters of architecture and is essential reading for architects, designers and anyone interested in the origins of contemporary architecture and culture.

Résumé:
From a converted printing house in Rotterdam and the experimental minds therein that brought you the Pig City project (an analysis of the pork industry’s manufacturing conditions) comes KM3, another contribution from the iconoclastic idea lab and architecture firm MVRDV. The office, which for more than a decade has been studying density as it relates to contemporary life and architecture, bases its theories for the uses of space on complex data. Classic projects include the gravity-defying WoZoCo home for the eldery in Amsterdam, the headquarters for public broadcasting company VPRO in Hilversum, the Dutch pavilion for World Expo 2000 in Hanover, and the Housing Silo in Amsterdam. The firm’s buildings overthrow the primacy of an architectural "footprint" for more innovative and varied spatial paradigms. A follow-up to the publication of FARMAX, which sought to question and analyze the growing suburban "greyness" of the Netherlands and to propose new ways of thinking about the homogenization of landscape, KM3 extends that idea to a three-dimensional model, one that "generates space instead of consuming it" and encourages variety in form. This book explores three different strategies each in Rotterdam and Amsterdam on their spatial and technical capacity for creating a "3D city," one of cantilevers and underground connections, airiness and, most of all, diverse spaces. This is thinking at the forefront of a new urbanism. DVD with software and films included.

Résumé:
John Pawson's work combines an essential simplicity with a keen attention to the details of everyday life and human experience. His pared-down yet luxurious houses and art galleries were his first projects to gain international attention, and his work has since included Calvin Klein's flagship store in New York, airport lounges for Cathay Pacific, and a kitchen for Obumex. In the last decade, the scope of his designs has broadened from objects and interiors to include houses, monasteries, pavilions and boats. This change in scale has given his office the opportunity to refine its minimalist aesthetic and further develop its ideas of a fundamental architecture based on the qualities of space, proportion, light and materials. Frequently these projects intervene in existing conditions to create spaces that are simultaneously simple and complex, timeless and contemporary: in the Novy Dvur Monastery in the Czech Republic, elements of the original baroque complex are combined with entirely new architecture to create a mysterious and beautiful sequence of spaces, and in the Baron House in Sweden the vernacular language of the area is refined and abstracted to create a truly modern home. Plain Space presents both this recent body of work and earlier projects from the perspective of someone who has had unique access to the work and archives of the office.

Résumé:
The Mikmak Foundation invited German architect Jürgen Mayer H. for the Designers of the Future lecture, because of the particular relationship in his work between research and architectural practice, combined with a strong interest in articulating the contemporary public realm, including the use and meaning of new media. The contemporary public realm faces enormous challenges, amongst others the introduction of a parallel digital public sphere. How should we envisage the role of the architect in an augmented reality of physical and virtual worlds? In this transcript of the lecture, Mayer H. discusses his viewpoints, research and architectural practice in four parts: ‘A-Way’, ‘Built Work’, ‘A Country’, and ‘Metropol Parasol’.
