Résumé:
In celebration of his 300th year, a definitive survey of Capability Brown’s most famous gardens and landscapes in Britain. Widely acknowledged as the most influential landscape designer of his age, Lancelot "Capability" Brown was to England what Frederick Law Olmsted was to America—responsible for shaping the very ideal of the nation’s parkland. Brown’s ambition was to bring out of a landscape the best of its potential rather than impose his own ideas upon it. His designs are organic, weaving gestures of color and perspective into the features that the country already afforded. So natural are his designs, and so perfectly do they complement the houses within them, that for many a Capability Brown landscape is the epitome of the English estate.

Résumé:
Charles Correa’s A Place in the Shade explores architectural and urban issues in India, from the house as a machine for dealing with the country’s often hostile climate to the metaphysical role of architecture as a “model of the cosmos.” This provocative and eminently readable collection of essays argues that the country’s habitat must respond to the overriding parameters of climate, culture and financial resources, and that our physical environment should accommodate both diversity and synergy. Over the last few decades, urban real estate has become the primary source of financing for political parties and the politicians who run them, and as Correa acknowledges, “you cannot look at cities without wandering into architecture on the one hand and politics on the other.” This book identifies the defining issues of the urbanization trends that are so rapidly transforming India.

Résumé:
Over the last half century, Bernard Lassus has developed his theory and practice of the conditions that enable our appropriation of urban spaces. Light, colour and movement are the main elements forming his art installations and urban spatial designs. In this previously unpublished analysis, art historian Stephen Bann scrutinises Lassuss professional and creative trajectory as it intersects with other leading artistic and intellectual figures, from kinetic art to garden design and landscapes. Appearances in the everyday environment are crucial in this reflection on the meaning of being an integral part of the shifts of contemporary society, in architecture, urbanism and beyond.

In 1996 Mateja Vehovar and Stefan Jauslin formed their own architectural office in Zurich after studying at Columbia University in New York and the ETH in Zurich respectively. Clearly marked by an interdisciplinary approach, their work revolves around landscape architecture, exhibition design, room installations, as well as architectural projects. In their work, space is used as a medium to bring about specific experiences and feelings in its users. In 1999, Vehovar & Jauslin were awarded the Swiss Federal Prize for art and this publication documents 16 selected works, situating them in the context of experimental design.

Résumé:
Andrew Jackson Downing was among the first to develop aesthetic theories that differed sharply from those perpetuated in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Europe. He designed houses based upon American democratic values and advocated for domestic design that would satisfy basic human needs along with the desire to live well. In this book, Caren Yglesias, a practicing architect, examines Downing's legacy with an eye for relevance to today's domestic landscape. She builds on Downing's work in order to redefine what makes a "complete," or nurturing and fulfilling, house and grounds.
