With the many additions to the campus of Stanford university since the publication of this book, including the Frances Arrillaga alumni center by Hoover Associates / The SWA Group, the James H. Clark center for bio sciences – bio engineering by Foster and Partners / Peter Walker and Partners, and the Carnegie institution by Esherik Homsey Dodge and Davis, it is time for a revised edition of this guide. The original 1891 campus, conceived by Frederick Law Olmsted and executed by architects Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, balances architecture, landscapes, and the natural surroundings in a composition of classic formal beauty. Stanford is a model of university design, from the nineteenth-century Memorial court and Main quad to twentieth-century buildings and restorations that respect the historic campus while contributing to modern design. This revised edition features 16 new pages on the additions to the campus and many updated entries with new photography.

Résumé:
"Lots of parking" examines a neglected aspect of this rise of the automobile: the impact on America not of cars in motion but of cars at rest. While most studies have tended to focus on highway construction and engineering improvements to accommodate increasing flow and the desire for speed, John A. Jakle and Keith A. Sculle examine a fundamental feature of the urban, and suburban, scene—the parking lot. Their lively and exhaustive exploration traces the history of parking from the curbside to the rise of public and commercial parking lots and garages and the concomitant demolition of the old pedestrian-oriented urban infrastructure. In an accessible style enhanced by a range of interesting and unusual illustrations, Jakle and Sculle discuss the role of parking in downtown revitalization efforts and, by contrast, its role in the promotion of outlying suburban shopping districts and its incorporation into our neighborhoods and residences.

Résumé:
Philadelphia architect Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974) was one of the most influential American architects of the twentieth century. His work, widely recognized as a link between modern and classical traditions, is distinguished by its simple yet monumental design. In this book, Thomas Leslie shows that Kahn was also an extraordinarily gifted technologist and that his careful presentation of engineering principles set the stage for the high-tech movement in Europe and America. The examination of four major buildings—the Yale Art Gallery, the Richards Medical Laboratories, the Salk Institute, and the Kimbell Art Museum—and several smaller projects by Kahn reveals this hidden theme : an expressive integration of construction, structure, and services into buildings that dramatically highlight the processes involved in their making and function. Previously unpublished drawings, construction photographs, and sketches complement new diagrams that illustrate the profound technical poetry within Kahn's buildings.

Résumé:
«The Technical Drawing volume is directed at those commencing studies in architecture and civil engineering, and trainees in construction drawing and technical drawing. University courses in particular often require basic knowledge for the preparation of technical drawings, which students have to acquire laboriously for themselves. The difficulty lies in the large number of ISO standards that regulate construction drawings - the German DIN standards were largely the basis for international standards. Regardless of these general rules, however, there is no one correct way of preparing and creating a design or working drawing. Construction drawings always an act of self-expression by the person preparing them; they have a personal touch. This book therefore provides the fundamentals required for the various plan types and drawings in the planning process - so that students are enabled to present their designs and ideas quickly and confidently through construction drawings.» Bert Bielefeld, Foreword

This vibrantly designed, updated and expanded edition celebrates every facet of the skyscraper as an architectural icon. Few buildings rivet our attention like skyscrapers. As the race to build higher and higher continues, these symbols of success and economic power dominate and reshape urban skylines across the globe. Opening with Chicago s Reliance Building, built in 1894, and closing with plans for the London Bridge Tower, scheduled to be completed in 2011, eye-catching two to four page spreads in this up-to-date and comprehensive volume capture over fifty of the world s most important skyscrapers. Each building is breathtakingly photographed and an accompanying text offers intriguing historical details, notes on construction, and engineering feats. Tracing the evolution of these magnificent structures, Skyscrapers illustrates their significance not only in architectural history, but also as a reflection of humankind s most competitive and optimistic urges.

Résumé:
For millennia, disused buildings have been cannibalized for the construction of new ones. Yet, in today’s world, what is known as circular architecture raises a multitude of questions and challenges with regard to technology, safety, energy, and associated legal aspects. This book is a unique compendium of circular architecture. Richly illustrated, it explores comprehensively through essays and illuminating conversations between experts all the questions and challenges that architects and engineers face with circular architecture designs. It is based on the case study of the K.118 project in Winterthur, Switzerland’s largest building to date that consists mainly of re-used parts. Since its outset in 2018, the K.118 project has been evaluated within the framework of an interdisciplinary research with regard to aspects of design and engineering, energy, economy, processes, and legal issues. This volume presents the results in striking visuals and concise texts.

The range of projects includes buildings for living, health, culture and education as well as engineering projects. maa can look back on a long series of publications and exhibitions which document the consistency of their work. This book focuses on their latest series of projects and provides a direct insight into the considerations of the maa work process.

Résumé:
For seven thousand years concrete has periodically shaped the path of human progress. Reese Palley's fascinating history of this ubiquitous and versatile material chronicles the repeated and often centuries-long losses of the technology and its many reemergences and the cultural, scientific, and engineering accomplishments it has enabled. Palley takes us from concrete's earliest beginnings, including the startling proof that at least one of the pyramids was partially poured, through the building of the Eddystone Light, to the dramatic building explosion in the use of concrete during the twentieth century and the start of the twenty-first century. He discusses the environmental impact of the production of concrete and attempts to find substitutes for the burning of lime. He ends by contemplating outer space, where almost all of the elements needed to build extraterrestrial communities already exist in the chemical makeup of the moon and Mars.

Résumé:
Andrea Palladio is unquestionably the most important architect in the Western world: his carefully proportioned, pedimented designs are the foundations for most single-family homes and public buildings in the United States and Europe. In 1776, architect and scholar Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi began documenting and analyzing Palladio's designs, which were published in four volumes as Le fabbriche e i disegni di Andrea Palladio. Gathered together here for the first time in English in a single volume, The Buildings and Designs of Andrea Palladio is the complete works of Palladio, from his well-known villas of the Veneto to his lesser-known engineering structures, such as bridges. Featuring the highest quality printing and binding, this large-format stunner features more than two hundred reproductions and showcases Palladio's designs for villas, churches, and civic buildings, and for the first time, the English translation of Scamozzi's introduction to Palladio's remarkable oeuvre.

Résumé:
Architects today incorporate principles of sustainable design as a matter of necessity. But the challenge of unifying climate control and building functionality, of securing a managed environment within a natural setting--and combating the harsh forces of wind, water, and sun--presented a new set of obstacles to architects and engineers in the mid-twentieth century. First published in 1963, Design with Climate was one of the most pioneering books in the field and remains an important reference for practitioners, teachers, and students, over fifty years later. In this book, Victor Olgyay explores the impact of climate on shelter design, identifying four distinct climatic regions and explaining the effect of each on orientation, air movement, site, and materials. He derives principles from biology, engineering, meteorology, and physics, and demonstrates how an analytical approach to climate management can merge into a harmonious and aesthetically sound design concept.
