Résumé:
"Portrait of J" joins the rich tradition of socially engaged portraiture, echoing seminal works such as August Sander’s "Face of Our Time," Irving Penn’s "Small Trades," and, Wolfgang Tillmans’s "Portraits." What distinguishes "Portrait of J" is its intentional focus on ordinary individuals photographed with the same care and reverence often reserved for cultural icons. Shot across a variety of familiar, recognizable locations, mainly in urban environments, Homma’s portraits have an illuminating quality that reveal a psychological depth in their subjects. His portraits are guided by empathy and a desire to observe people as they are—free from manipulation or staging. The result is a more inclusive, nuanced visual representation of Japanese identity—expanding the lens through which Japanese people are seen both within Japan and internationally.

Résumé:
''Painting Photography Painting'' is the essential first collection of essays by critic and theorist Carol Armstrong, bringing together writings encompassing the many inflection points of her academic work, including French painting, early photography, feminist theory, and the representation of women and gender in the visual arts. In the book’s titular essay, Armstrong asks of Ellen Gallagher’s 2008 painting ''An Experiment of Unusual Opportunity'', which depicts a barely-visible sea creature created out of ink, graphite, oil, varnish, and variously sliced paper, ‘in what sense is this a painting exactly?’ This enquiry into the very essence of the medium provides a thread that runs throughout the book’s wide-ranging essays and ties together a variety of works on paper ‘inscribed, drawn, printed, photographed, and variously pierced and punctured’.

Résumé:
Almost all of the seventeen texts in this anthology revolve around the same topic: drawing. There are subtle variations in the inception and focus of each essay, but they can be read as a unique, continuous monologue that keeps going back to that same core idea, almost compulsively. Flores & Prats believe in the capacity of drawing by hand to generate multiple and complex strata of knowledge about a space or a place, so they use it to guide the successive steps in their design process. Their obsession with drawing is a form of optimistic resistance, founded on the belief that the tools of architectural representation, if used with intensity, rigour and passion, can still help us decipher the world that surrounds us.

Résumé:
DMJournal–Architecture and Representation is a new publication dedicated to the exploration of practices, histories and material cultures of drawing in architecture and related fields. ''In addressing this inaugural issue of Drawing Matter Journal to the 'geological imagination', we aimed to investigate the imbrication of thinking in architecture and art with matters of the earth, and to explore the kinds of graphic inscription to which this has given rise. Moreover, in doing so we wanted to attend to the much-debated concept of the Anthropocene and the way it has both given a new centrality to geology in critical cultural discourses and led to different kinds of questions being addressed to historical materials. This is evident in various ways across the contributions to this issue.''
